From<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0killing the business to running it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> controversial as ever, some fans and pundits continue as if the Elite&#8217;s direction is to take AEW into the ground. Especially in the wake of recent decisions related to wounds, many fans hoped had healed and been forgotten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Young Bucks<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">tandem<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0seem revitalised.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Goading,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and freely feeding into some fans\u2019 meta-awareness of behind the scenes. Along with their new stablemates, they are telling a deeper story. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One that partly parodies repeated\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WWE\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">storyline depictions of behind-the-scenes authority figures while furthering their own Elite saga in a new direction. There&#8217;s been a mixture of fun since the Bucks put on their\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dumb and Dumber-inspired<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0business suits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The EVPs are taking their job as\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">seriously,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as two men known intent to boil the proverbial urine of those who want to hate on them and All Elite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alongside violent storytelling and veiled meta-shots at WWE. Playing so close to reality and linking their actions to the business side of wrestling plays into some fans&#8217; focus on AEW&#8217;s business prospects and finances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wider<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0issues AEW has\/is facing creatively and financially\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">heading<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0into potential right-fee negotiations by the end of this year with\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Warner Brothers Discovery<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. In the face of uncertainty, criticism and restoring the \u201cfeeling\u201d, The Elite&#8217;s punk DIY attitude of flying in the face of criticism may seem dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Depending on if and how you use metrics to judge your wrestling,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0your interpretation of the line graph of AEW\u2019s progress in 2024 will differ.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Whether you see growth or regression is an interpretation based on your biases and preferences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is not a discussion of AEW\u2019s business strategy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0I did discuss discord over AEW\u2019s pay of wrestling\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/04\/10\/aew-overpay-wrestlers-wwe-underpay-wrestlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rather<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, it\u2019s a discussion of whether and how the EVPs&#8217; rebranding of The Elite can successfully help AEW from a creative standout. And thus impact AEW&#8217;s business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Petty Nature of Things<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since turning heel, the Young Buck\u2019s level of detail and thought into each\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of their segments<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> seems more meticulous and layered compared to their late 2022 return from suspension. The levels of meta in their characters innately take further shots at WWE. Meta humour is hard to do. However, The Bucks have a history of success with this going back to the Indies and <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Being the Elite<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. It contributed to their following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the one hand, they have played into some fans\u2019 perceptive that they are aloof, self-absorbed, and passive-aggressive wrestlers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0terrible managers with no people skills.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0On the other, they have parodied wrestling\u2019s real, not fictitious, authority figures.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has included their boss,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tony Khan<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">See their post-<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Revolution<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0announcement after losing to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sting<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Darby Allin<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Their decision to use their full \u201cGod-given names\u201d seems like Vincism of the past. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Heels should have to have longer formal names, damn it! Early segments where they were seen backstage producing segments felt at points like they were taking shots at WWE production and micromanaging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some might argue that this approach is too niche and somewhat petty. While I agree, it&#8217;s nothing new in wrestling. It hasn\u2019t always worked, including one recent\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">huge<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0error of judgment. Some fans\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are fed up<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with AEW taking shots at WWE. Likewise, those same fans may or may not have a problem when WWE gives it back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The criticism that it makes AEW seem secondary is fair to an extent, but it&#8217;s also selective.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Especially when you consider that while\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the pro wrestling industry might be built<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the ideas of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0masculinity, strength and brotherhood, pettiness has always been a feature.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Politics is innate in wrestling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Spirit of Competition Turns Nasty<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Even before\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vince McMahon<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0aired skits with\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Billionaire Ted\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Huckster<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0promoters and wrestlers have been displaying pettiness backstage and in front of crowds.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vince McMahon Sr<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0fired\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hulk Hogan<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0before superstardom for working on\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rocky III<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was suggested<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tommy Rich\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0one-time short\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NWA<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0World Championship reign was used by\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jim Barnett<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in his power struggle with other members of<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Georgia Championship Wrestling<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Politics has festered in the ring before\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">recent times<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0with \u201c<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hangman\u201d Adam Page<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0mentioning &#8220;worker\u2019s rights&#8221;. Think of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bruiser Brody<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0refusing to work with opponents<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lex Luger<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in their infamous 1989 cage match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was decades before\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shawn Michael<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0bumped like a Looney Tune character for Hogan. Hulk&#8217;s inclusion three times in this section was a happy accident. Yet it does highlight a link between position, politics and pettiness that filters from the top down in wrestling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I would argue this has filtered down through the years into the fandom. Especially now into modern wrestling tribalism.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s something<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0wrestlers and both AEW and WWE are playing on because it drives engagement.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is one metric of success: social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Does that mean that engaging in these games with an extremely dedicated group of fans, often referred to as a \u201cminority\u201d,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">bad<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for business? That&#8217;s a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hard<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0question to answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before revisiting The Elite, we can\u2019t go on without addressing the words of the man once known as &#8220;The Voice of the Voiceless&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Magic of CM Punk\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Personally, like a lot of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0fans, I want to move on from discussing\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CM Punk<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and AEW.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Yet the problem is this new version of the Elite has explicitly made their connection to Punk\u2019s exit clear on multiple occasions. It\u2019s the entire basis of Perry\u2019s heel persona. The passive-aggressive motivation for the Buck\u2019s heel turn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I broke down Punk\u2019s interview on the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MMA Hour<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/04\/02\/breakdown-of-cm-punks-the-mma-hour-with-ariel-helwani-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">). I focused on only giving context to his perspective to be objective.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0I did not discuss\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wider<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0context: the timing of the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It happened just before\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestlemania XL<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Arguably WWE\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">biggest<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0recent success. Commercially and creatively. Punk joined WWE as the wave was about to reach its peak.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0meant that his comparisons of AEW and WWE as businesses and criticism aimed at Tony Khan and the EVPs have been helped by Punk&#8217;s association with WWE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Intentionally or not, it&#8217;s helped some fans paint Punk as being on the right side of history at present. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It implicitly presented Punk as right and AEW as wrong because of the differences in business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That isn\u2019t to say Punk\u2019s comments on AEW business and\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">creative<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0do not have merit.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is not to say Punk\u2019s truth is wrong. One of Punk\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">comments,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0about the \u201cmagic of CM Punk<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is Punk enjoys blurring the lines between what\u2019s real and a work. Making fans believe there is controversy is\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">important<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The reality behind the magic is Punk knows how to articulate his message and manipulate existing perceptions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To tap into thoughts already<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0circulating\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in the wider<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0wrestling consciousness to get a reaction.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Punk was open that he enjoyed aspects of his time in AEW. Yet Punk is fully aware that fans perceive him as a saint or devil with no in-between. Muck sticks more than positive praise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He sets verbal pitfalls and traps that opponents may inevitably slip into, proving him right.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That All In Footage\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Right now,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0we\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fans<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0cannot escape the bitter historical thread that binds them.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0The reason is that AEW has not yet let go of it. The promotion responded loud and clear. Despite every person and their\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bret Hart<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0wrestling buddy knowing it would not look good. Still, they did it. Twice. Three times if you include Ospreay&#8217;s &#8220;grinding&#8221; response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adam Copeland\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0rah-rah speech on the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dynamite<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">after the interview<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0inadvertently proved Punk right.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0It showed that AEW was focused too much on itself and\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">good<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0matches rather than promoting and growing its audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ross Berman<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wrestlinginc<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on the website&#8217;s weekly article series of important shows\u00a0<\/span><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201c3 things we hated and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a03\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">things we loved\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, described the speech as \u201coddly apocalyptic\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The implication is that the speech was cultish. Preaching to the converted. Worse, Berman suggested this reinforced a narrative about AEW\u2019s decline. \u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wrestlinginc.com\/1554923\/aew-dynamite-april-3-24-3-things-we-hated-3-things-we-loved\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Any avid viewer of cult narrative knows that there&#8217;s only one way this ends<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d The response made this narrative feel\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">real<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to some fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But honestly, if they had completely ignored it, would some fans have let it drop? Would the narrative have changed? The stalemate of tribalism suggests not. Or at least until the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">next<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0shots\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were fired<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shots were fired again in the safety of the high ground, which was the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">huge<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, monumental win that was Wrestlemania.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Triple H<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pat McAfee<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and Punk again took swipes at AEW. The short-term reality is, footage or not, AEW had already lost this battle. The footage short-term made things worse for AEW. Did it damage this new corporate version of The Elite by association?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After a stellar\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dynasty\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">(more on this later),\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it feels like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the news cycle has moved on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Confirmation Bias\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Releasing the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All In<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0footage, although attempted as a tie-in for The Bucks\u2019 legacy feud with<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0FTR<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, became an umbrella in a lightning storm for the promotion. If the goal was sympathy for AEW, this failed spectacularly. The reality was a dog pile on AEW. Why? Tribalism. The footage just confirmed what everyone had already made their minds up about. Chicago could have been an anomaly. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yet it\u2019s also CM Punk\u2019s hometown. Across Perry\u2019s tour of Japan, Perry was able to work on his <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">biggest<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0weaknesses: promos and character work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alongside the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">House of Torture<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(fitting given the divisive attitude towards the faction mirrored the attitude held against Jack), Perry cut anti-AEW promos. Perry developed\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a clear<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0character and motivation. He has become less wooden and is now more dynamic.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the finished article, but Perry feels ready to level up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Making It Rain\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3gp22yN_8xU?si=xX8ImTRLZh5CLp4D\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kazuchika Okada<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2019s success at integrating and becoming a weekly TV wrestling character cannot be understated. Although Okada has perhaps had a smaller amount of screen time than\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Will Ospreay<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the Rainmaker has maximized his minutes. Okada oozes smugness, entitlement, and superiority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Whether this has been teaming with the Bucks, winning the Continental Championship or showing that a former top Japanese wrestler can work as an episodic character on a wrestling show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Being the Continental champion is\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the perfect positioning currently<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for his character and the wrestler himself.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0As I outlined in discussing Okada\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/03\/22\/kazuchika-okada-winning-the-aew-continental-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">championship victory<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Okada has not been normalised. Okada has been kept\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">special<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and given his own division\/story arch, separate from the world championship picture.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has allowed Ospreay to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/04\/22\/elevating-the-risks-and-rewards-of-aew-pushing-will-ospreay-to-the-sky\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">foreshadowed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as the next world champion<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Like the Bucks, Okada seems revitalised in this heel role<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The championship feels elevated by Okada\u2019s presence. Reverted to the original version of the Rainmaker has benefited the unit\u2019s prestige, and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">relevance and hints at what\u2019s to come. Especially once\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kenny Omega<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is healthy again and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHangman\u201d Adam Page<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0returns from suspension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From a storyline and business standpoint, nepotism connects this real-life friend.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0built appropriately with engaging storylines, the prospect of any combination of the unit vs. Omega, Page and partners. As well as singles matches could draw attention. It\u2019s up to fans and detractors as much as the wrestlers themselves. Matthew and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nicholas Jackson<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, along with Jack Perry, could be seen as passive-aggressively taking Punk\u2019s advice of trying to turn real-life drama into money. Ironically, this time with him elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Has this\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0will it be too niche? Are the Elite focusing too much on the past rather than moving forward? There is a balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At points, the insider aspects have been too much. I touched on this profiling\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2024\/02\/29\/match-point-stings-last-match-aew-revolution-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Young Bucks vs. Sting and Darby Allin<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0some things did not click initially with The Bucks. Talking about the format sheet (\u201cbangers\u201d) and seeing them produce a segment between Sting and Darby was distracting and detracted from the segment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lance Storm<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0once stated that WWE shows during the 2010s were TV shows about booking wrestling rather than the wrestling itself. The era of wrestling\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being booked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for an audience of one in WWE has gone. It&#8217;s no longer topical or relevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Contrastingly, there is more to their business gimmick. You don\u2019t need to know the lore or get the insider references to enjoy this new corporate version of the Elite. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Taking the trope of the boss you want to smack has been done before in wrestling beyond WWE. Using modern business\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">lingo<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, false positivity, and the promise of pizza parties as a means of motivation reflects modern cultural trends that suit the present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now, the Bucks seem to be finding their groove. All In has been dealt with and is in the process. Three of the four men are wearing gold. Jack Perry has fans\u2019 attention. There are signs this version of authority can translate to business with time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This Business Is About Money\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dedicated wrestling fans of the Internet Wrestling Community can become stuck in a myopic viewpoint of wrestlers and wrestling promotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Step back and consider\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Revolution\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">buys were up 34.2% from\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">World\u2019s End<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Overall, this was AEW\u2019s third-largest PPV buy in their history. Credit goes in part to Sting\u2019s retirement. However, the Bucks were the other half of that main event. Perry had NJPW\u2019s top-selling t-shirt for two months back-to-back. There will be naysayers who will say that benefits NJPW rather than AEW. Regardless, they are doing\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">exactly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0what Punk said. They are trying to generate money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AEW as a product has still not found its feeling. Some fans might state the view AEW is more\u00a0focused on five-star matches than storylines and promotion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yet\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0this new version of The Elite<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, they have been doing the opposite<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0completely ignores that everything the Bucks have been doing on this heel run has been story and character-driven.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To the point that in<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0some matches, The Bucks deliberately wrestled at a slower pace as if (likely) to spite critics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Think about the bloody beating with white baseball bats on Sting and Darby. Even with the\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All In<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0footage, they connected it to their loss to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">FTR<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. While poorly received, they tried to have their cake and eat it. Like CM Punk himself, Perry is divisive. People are talking about him. This new Elite has a chance to flex their power. The fact they use humour doesn&#8217;t take away from the group being successful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During commercial and critical successful periods, like Kenny Omega\u2019s world championship reign, The Elite weaved humour into segments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They could get serious and become Extremely Violent People in the ring, but still maintain the humour. They have already proved they can be insufferable bosses. Now\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">with<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0four members and a new dynamic to form, there is the potential to capitalise on the controversy. Maybe create cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don&#8217;t\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Something else to consider: if The Buck had gone heel but taken a different route, would the criticism of them, The Elite, AEW and Tony Khan&#8217;s handling of CM Punk&#8217;s exit be any different after the MMA Hour? Would WWE have left AEW alone and not taken shots at them? Would some fans entrenched in their mindsets feel differently about everyone mentioned in the first sentence?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One issue with the divisions within the wrestling fan base is that for some\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">their<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0identities as fans are so tied up in being pro on\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one side<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and anti another, that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">they are not likely to change their minds on a product, wrestler or philosophy of wrestling. It may be a different day\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0their perspectives\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are going to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0be the same. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Young Bucks are so controversial to some that the act of being in wrestling is enough to raise their blood pressure. From their stance, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">why<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0not turn this up to eleven? Realistically, it is going to generate conversation regardless. So why not encourage a bit of negativity?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you&#8217;re damned if you do, you&#8217;re damned if you don&#8217;t.\u00a0Someone once said all publicity is good publicity. At least in\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">terms of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0social media, engagement as a metric is a driver of success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Even decisions that might help generate buzz for AEW and get attention on the product will be dismissed\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">such<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tony Khan Takes a Punch and a Piledriver<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8Zok-ZNOMsI?si=VI41Ku5TrxlYiOF7\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Something that some fans will miss about this week&#8217;s Dynamite conclusion with The Elite taking out Tony Khan.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0It feels somewhat like a WWE-style angle. It feels\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">somewhat<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0CM Punk inspired in taking on the authority figure.\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Given in<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0recent months\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Rock\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">similarly in storyline abused his power to impact Wrestlemania, this may seem familiar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It may\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">some<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0feel like a step too far for AEW fans themselves involving Khan in an active storyline, something many fans want to never happen because it would be too much like WWE. Yet it is positioned as a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">huge<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0storyline moment in a company criticised for not doing storylines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Creatively, it&#8217;s pushing the Elite and company perhaps in a different direction. Some might worry if it repeats the sports entertainment elements of the late 2023 world championship picture with\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MJF<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many will have a knee-jerk reaction. It might (likely) be negative. However, depending on how things play out, like with the All In footage, opinions change quickly in wrestling. The news cycle moves on\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0AEW as a company, despite claims otherwise, is trying to gain exposure and capitalise on this to grow their business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The night after Dynamite is the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NFL draft<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Tony Khan is involved in the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, where AEW happened to broadcast from. Already, the NFL&#8217;s official website has promoted the angle. Other new sites will likely do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For a company accused of focusing on good wrestling and catering to a niche, AEW is going to get some mainstream attention from the angle. It\u2019s a way of trying to draw new fans in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The follow-up creative needs to be delivered to fully capitalise on any attention gained. That\u2019s the job for next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><u><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Having Their Cake and Eating It Too\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AEW might be\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the place<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0where the best wrestle, but on the other side\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of things<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, The Elite are the storyline heart of the promotion.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Right now,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0this is still an issue for AEW more widely: how they tell stories and build characters.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0When writing about Will Ospreay, I pointed out there is always a danger AEW relies on dream matches over storylines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The build to Ospreay and\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bryan Danielson<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0example<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, along with other\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">key<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">matches<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was missing story beats and a deeper emotional connection beyond the promise of great wrestling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If this new Elite and new Elite saga is to be successful, they must continue to adapt, and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be able to find a more streamlined and easily accessible approach to story-telling. Move on from Punk to prove him wrong. Long-term, there is the looming possibility of Elite saga matches. Multi-man and singles matches with Omega, Hangman and friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the short term, new ground can be explored. With time, Okada and Jack Perry could be headliners. The Young Bucks could aim to have their cake and eat it\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">too<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Keep to their ethos of wrestling while expanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But it&#8217;s a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fine<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0balance.\u00a0The meta can still be there, but Easter eggs\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">rather<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the main priority.
