In addition to Dynamite, AEW taped this Friday’s episode of Rampage and Monday’s episode of AEW Dark: Elevation, set to air on October 3rd. It’s been no secret that Tony Khan is trying to get a deal for his new brand. In fact, it is for this reason that many believe Chris Jericho won the ROH title, as he is the most recognizable mainstream face within AEW. Plus, it’s not like Khan didn’t use this tactic before with Jericho, as it was Jericho’s run as the first-ever AEW world champion that is credited for helping launch AEW into greater heights.

On Wednesday night, AEW taped eight matches for Dark Elevation. While these matches had much the same feel of any other Elevation card, they were also marked by an overwhelmingly strong ROH presence. The tapings featured Brian Cage, who aside from an appearance in Grand Slam’s Golden Ticket Battle Royal, hadn’t been seen in an AEW ring in nearly a year. His last two appearances under Khan were both for ROH. The tapings also featured Cheeseburger, who is a beloved former ROH mainstay and a local favorite. AEW has used Cheeseburger three times this year and two of them have been at the Philadelphia tapings. The third time was in Baltimore, MD, which had become ROH’s main base outside of Philadelphia in recent years.

Such was the theme throughout the card as fellow ROH wrestlers, Gia Scott, LSG, and Shamokin, Pennsylvania’s own Tony Deppen all had matches. Deppen and LSG have been used sparingly in AEW, only brought in so far for tapings in the PA/NJ/MD area. Also featured were wrestlers with ties to the city of Brotherly Love including Penelope Ford and Best Friends‘ Chuck Taylor as well as the debut of New York City’s Tracy Williams. Finally, the card included Dalton Castle and the Boys‘ first defense of the ROH six-man titles they won in July at Death Before Dishonor.

All in all, many of the wrestlers and matches received positive reactions from the Philadelphia crowd in a way they may not have otherwise seen in other cities. Philadelphia was the birthplace of Ring of Honor and continued to play an important role in the brand’s existence all the way until the end. It is likely if ROH does get a TV deal and do any sort of touring outside of AEW scheduled events, that Philly will likely be a main stopping point. So if there was any city to do a test-run of sorts of what a weekly ROH show under Khan’s banner might look like, Philadelphia was the perfect setting.

Here are the spoilers and results for this Monday’s episode of AEW Dark: Elevation.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the October 3rd episode of AEW Dark: Elevation, as reported by individuals who attended the taping. Wrestling primarily with Chikara from 2009 – 2015, Williams made his Ring of Honor debut in 2012 as part of an ROH/Chikara crossover. Williams would return to ROH in 2018, taking part in the Survival of the Fittest tournament. Williams lost to Jonathan Gresham in the first round, but did enough to impress ROH brass that he was brought back a month later to wrestle Zack Sabre Jr. A former member of the popular indie stable, Catch Point, Williams’ prowess for pure, technical wrestling was evident over those two matches. The following year, Williams received a contract to join ROH, where he was a member of Juice Robinson‘s Lifeblood faction. Williams remained with ROH though it’s closure in 2021, wrestling alongside the Foundation at Final Battle 2021.

Interestingly enough, Williams was one of the names who had not yet been called into Khan’s ROH, but that all may be changing now that he’s made his AEW debut. In his career, Williams has wrestled his way through the indies, taking part in matches for Chikara, AIW, Evolve, WWN, CZW, DG USA, Beyond, GCW, CMLL, NJPW, and more. He’s won 10 titles including the ROH World Television Championship, currently being held by Samoa Joe.

Stay tuned to the Last Word on Pro Wrestling for more on this and other stories from around the world of wrestling, as they develop.
