{"id":108570,"date":"2022-01-18T15:00:34","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T20:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/?p=108570"},"modified":"2022-01-18T12:10:41","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T17:10:41","slug":"terminus-modern-age-grappling-results-and-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2022\/01\/18\/terminus-modern-age-grappling-results-and-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Terminus: Modern Age Grappling Results and Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hype for the first <strong>Terminus<\/strong> event had been <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/11\/12\/terminus-jonathan-gresham-baron-black\/\" target=\"_self\">building for quite some time<\/a> and that momentum finally came to a head when <strong>Jonathan Gresham<\/strong> and <strong>Baron Black\u2019s<\/strong> collaborative promotion made their official debut this past Sunday, January 16th. The card featured eight matches with talent from multiple different promotions, as well as two championship matches.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although I do see the promotion finding its footing as the months go on and they hold more events, the first event was quite underwhelming. Some of the matches fell flat, production was spotty at times and something just felt missing from the show in an overall sense. Nonetheless, let\u2019s get into the results and review for Terminus!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Terminus: Modern Age Grappling Results and Review &#8211; 1\/16\/21<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Lee Moriarty defeated Josh Woods (8:54)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A solid opening match between two of the rising stars in the world of technical wrestling. The match should have been a tone-setter for the rest of the card but didn\u2019t live up to that because it was a bit short. The counter sequences were good and I definitely foresee both of these guys being a big part of the promotion going forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: B-<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Daniel Garcia defeated Adam Priest, JDX, and Invictus Khash (12:24)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Daniel Garcia<\/strong> was far away the best part of this match, and it was clear he was going to win from the start. Everybody in the bout held their fair share in terms of striking, specifically <strong>Adam\u00a0Priest<\/strong> who\u2019s a part of my local independent scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bout was elimination style and took on the rules of an <strong>ROH<\/strong> four-way match \u2014 where only two people can be in the ring at the same time. These rules can be a bit of a bother at a time and they were in this match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garcia eliminated <strong>JDX<\/strong> with a low blow pin (that the referee didn\u2019t catch, I believe?). Shortly after, Priest was eliminated by Garcia after taking a vicious clothesline. Garcia then put away <strong>Invictus Khash<\/strong> by unloading palm strikes onto his skull, causing the TKO. The match itself was average, but I vastly appreciate how strong Garcia looked here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: B-<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mike Bennett defeated Moose via DQ (6:38)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wasn\u2019t good in the slightest. There is going to have to be an adjustment to the rules because this just doesn\u2019t work at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the first 30 seconds of the match, <strong>Moose<\/strong> sent <strong>Mike Bennett<\/strong> flying over the top rope \u2014 therefore giving him a \u2018warning\u2019. After that, the finish was very predictable and devalued any of the actual wrestling that was happening in the ring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Moose did the same thing only five minutes later, he was disqualified. Hopefully, these types of finishes don\u2019t become a habit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: F<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Diamante defeated Janai Kai (7:25)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event continued to plummet with this match. Although <strong>Diamante<\/strong> was a last-second replacement, these two had virtually zero chemistry and it, unfortunately, showed in-ring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the offense didn\u2019t look believable and both women seemed confused with each other at times. <strong>Janai<\/strong> <strong>Kai<\/strong> is one of the brighter spots in US women\u2019s indie wrestling, but this match just was not good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: D-<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Impact Digital Media Championship Match: Jordynne Grace (c) defeated Kiera Hogan (8:18)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you give <strong>Jordynne Grace<\/strong> and <strong>Kiera Hogan<\/strong> eight minutes, they\u2019re likely gonna make the most out of it. This was a matchup of pure strength from Grace and pure agility\/speed from Hogan. The two have worked together plenty in the past, being involved in 31 other matches together according to Cagematch.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"tr\" dir=\"ltr\">INSANE <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Terminus?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Terminus<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fh4R0uowUL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/fh4R0uowUL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NailsAndNY &#8211; Egomaniac (@NailsAndNY) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NailsAndNY\/status\/1482873745651945473?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do wish it was awarded a few more minutes, but I enjoyed it for what it was.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: B-<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>ROH World Championship Match: Bandido (c) defeated Baron Black (14:05)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bout had a few bright spots here and there but was average in the overall sense of things. It was a lot slower of a match than I anticipated \u2014 and the crowd clearly expected more as well. <strong>Bandido<\/strong> pulled out his usual stunts but the match wasn\u2019t paced well enough to make it work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Baron Black<\/strong> impressed me here. I\u2019ve seen very limited amounts of his work aside from his <strong>AEW Dark<\/strong> matches \u2014 which obviously aren\u2019t the best display for the talent on the losing side of those matches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this match would have been paced differently, it would have been better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: C-<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dante Caballero &amp; Joe Keys defeated Fred Yehi &amp; Tracy Williams (14:26)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point in the show, it was frustrating because there hadn\u2019t been an excellent match yet. In my opinion, the Pure Rules format just doesn\u2019t work with tag team matches. More than any other match, you need a face\/heel dynamic in tag bouts and that\u2019s hard to portray with the Pure format.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to the previous match, this just never got into that second gear. <strong>Fred Yehi<\/strong> and <strong>Tracy Williams<\/strong> had some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fantastic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sequences, but <strong>Joe Keys<\/strong> and <strong>Dante Caballero<\/strong> just didn\u2019t impress. I\u2019ll reiterate again that both Yehi and Williams turned in strong performances, but couldn\u2019t quite carry the entire match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: C-<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>ROH Original World Title Match: Jonathan Gresham (c) &amp; Josh Alexander &#8211; Double Pin (16:52)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was great \u2014 and honestly, how could it not be?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Josh Alexander<\/strong> used his size advantage to overwhelm <strong>Jonathan Gresham<\/strong> as the match went on. When Gresham is fighting \u2018against the odds\u2019 per se, he\u2019s at his absolute best. Alexander seemingly played more of a heel role as the match went on, which only added to that appeal. The mat wrestling was all super sleek, which complimented the rough fighting parts that the bout had.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheJonGresham?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@TheJonGresham<\/a> is so damn good! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TERMINUS?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#TERMINUS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oRZgCeZFPJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/oRZgCeZFPJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; \ud835\udc03\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc15\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc27 (@WrestlingCovers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WrestlingCovers\/status\/1482888035406696463?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My only issue was the finish. Non-finishes are such a dire issue in today\u2019s wrestling landscape and for a brand new company to end their debut event with one\u2026 it leaves a sour taste. I understand the \u2018real sports feel\u2019 that they\u2019re going for here, but it was done in better ways on other parts of the show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Grade: B+<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>While Bandido and Gresham were having a staredown after the match, AEW&#8217;s <strong>Santana<\/strong> made an appearance. This was a genuine surprise and since he&#8217;s already been announced for the Terminus&#8217; second event, I&#8217;m interested to see where this goes.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Terminus Results and Review Closing Thoughts\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terminus\u2019 debut event gets a <\/span><b>grade of a C-<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There was good, there was bad and there was average. It definitely wasn\u2019t a home run by any stretch, but it wasn\u2019t bad enough to prevent me from giving it another chance and seeing the optimism for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Positives:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Gresham\/Alexander<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Hogan\/Grace<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Daniel Garcia\u2019s presentation\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Fred Yehi<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Lee Moriarty\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Santana<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Negatives:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Production\/Crowd Volume<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Flow\/Match Order<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Kai\/Diamante<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Bennett\/Moose<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Specific Rules<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How did you feel about the results of the first Terminus show?
