He was part of the same round of releases as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/12\/29\/mercedes-martinez-aids-jade-cargill-signs-with-aew\/\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes Martinez<\/a>, <\/strong>who also recently made her AEW debut on December 29\u2019s episode of <em>AEW: Dynamite. <\/em>A month after his release in September 2021, Atlas spoke to pop culture outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-a0gUsKIpwU\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Instinct Culture<\/em><\/a> revealing that he had asked for his release months prior to being released by WWE in a very brief conversation with <strong>John Laurinaitis. <\/strong>Atlas cited his reason was the wish to prioritize his mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after appearing at <strong>Ring of Honor\u2019s<\/strong> event <em>Death Before Dishonor, <\/em>Atlas announced his retirement from professional wrestling, in September 2021, citing his mental health as his reasoning. Atlas took to Twitter to clarify speculation about his health following his Ring of Honor appearance.
