It was filled with star-studded moments, remarkable matches, and a slew of debuts and returns. With all of the newsworthy moments in 2021, there was a good amount of solid Championship reigns across the multitude of promotions that the world of wrestling has to offer. In honor of those, let\u2019s take a look at the five best Championship reigns of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: These reigns did not have to start in 2021 to qualify. The only qualification is that a significant portion of the reign had to take place over the duration of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>The Best Championship Reigns of 2021<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Roman Reigns kept his word: WrestleMania 37 Exclusive, April 11, 2021\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uzSMaQSNRm8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><b>Roman Reigns\u2019 WWE Universal Championship Reign (08.30.20 &#8211; current)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Roman Reigns<\/strong> has completely transformed himself in the eyes of many wrestling fans. Reigns has gone from your standard, boring baby face with very little upside to a monster heel who has been unstoppable and is making strides to becoming one of the best stars in recent memory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along the path of the \u2018Tribal Chief\u2019 persona, Reigns has held the Universal Championship for nearly 500 days. This reign has produced a number of fantastic matches with the likes of <strong>Edge, Daniel Bryan, Cesaro, Kevin Owens,<\/strong> and more. In my personal opinion, Reigns\u2019 current run with the belt has saved his <strong>WWE<\/strong> career from being a product of mediocrity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite Match: Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Edge &#8211; WrestleMania 37\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 526px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/VT859kF.jpg?1\" alt=\"Gresham, Top 2021 Championship Reigns\" width=\"526\" height=\"526\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo \/ ROH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>Jonathan Gresham\u2019s ROH Pure Championship Reign (10.30.20 &#8211; 09.12.21)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Ring Of Honor returned from the pandemic hiatus in 2020, <strong>Jonathan Gresham<\/strong> made it his personal mission to put Pure Wrestling back on the map. Gresham would go on <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/01\/06\/how-the-pure-championship-can-revitalize-ring-of-honor\/\" target=\"_self\">to do right by his style of wrestling<\/a>, as he won the Pure Championship Tournament and was crowned the first Pure Champion in nearly fifteen years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although he only defended the belt eight times over the 317-day reign, there was still such a sense of importance that was felt every time Gresham was on-screen. The title being brought back also ushered in the creation of <strong>The Foundation<\/strong> &#8211; which turned out to be one of the best factions the company has ever created.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Favorite Match: Jonathan Gresham vs. Mike Bennett &#8211; ROH Best In The World 2021<\/b><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/8xd3BBq.jpg\" alt=\"John Wayne Murdoch Top Championship Reigns 2021\" width=\"600\" height=\"409\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo \/ ICW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><b>John Wayne Murdoch\u2019s ICW American Deathmatch Championship Reign (04.10.21 &#8211; current)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>John Wayne Murdoch<\/strong> has become one of the workhorses of professional wrestling in 2021. Murdoch has taken his 18-year in-ring career to the next level with his unique approach to deathmatches, which paid off when <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/prowrestling\/2021\/04\/11\/john-wayne-murdoch-icw-american-deathmatch-championship\/\" target=\"_self\">he became the first-ever ICW American Deathmatch Champion<\/a> during WrestleMania week in Tampa, Florida.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murdoch\u2019s reign, despite only being at the 263-day mark, has already featured fifteen title defenses. Also, Murdoch has had 136 matches this year \u2014 which is an impressive achievement in itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Favorite Match: John Wayne Murdoch vs. Eric Ryan &#8211; 60 Minute Iron Man Match &#8211; ICW No Holds Barred Volume 19: Deathmatch Horror Story<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AEW World Championship Preview: Kenny Omega vs Hangman Page | AEW Full Gear, 11\/13\/21\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cZ8HGbMeRko?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kenny Omega\u2019s AEW World Championship Reign (12.02.20 &#8211; 11.13.21)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although flawed at some times, <strong>Kenny Omega\u2019s<\/strong> run with the AEW World Title was chalked up as an overall success in my book. The reign took Omega from being \u201cunderutilized\u201d as a singles wrestler, all the way to being crowned #1 in the PWI 500 for the second time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding out that Omega worked the whole reign hurt afterward gave me a new sense of appreciation for him and how hard he worked to mold himself into a monster heel. The end result of the reign was the Hangman chapter being closed \u2014 which was the satisfying ending we all were hoping for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite Match: Adam Page vs. Kenny Omega &#8211; Full Gear 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gail Kim RETURNS! Who Is Deonna Purrazzo&#039;s MYSTERY OPPONENT?! | IMPACT! Highlights July 8, 2021\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HRqhknDEdB4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>Deonna Purrazzo\u2019s Impact Knockouts Championship Reign (11.12.20 &#8211; 10.23.21)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Deonna Purrazzo<\/strong> has gone from being an absolute waste of talent that was stuck in the WWE system to being one of the biggest stars in women\u2019s wrestling. All it took was a dominant Championship reign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon her release from WWE, I personally expected Purrazzo to pop up in <strong>AEW.<\/strong> It made all the sense in the world considering she was nearly a part of the historic <em>All In<\/em> event. When she turned up in <strong>IMPACT Wrestling,<\/strong> I was honestly fairly disappointed and didn\u2019t have the highest of hopes for her there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can admit I was wrong. Purrazzo\u2019s set of Knockouts Title Reigns has launched her into another stratosphere.
