According to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, an MMA aficionado who has covered the sport for several years and is also a pro wrestling fan who covers the sport from time to time has reported that Cain Velasquez was in attendance for the Super J Cup tournament for New Japan Pro Wrestling. The show, which was held in San Francisco last night for night 2 of the tournament, is being recorded for the NJPW World platform for video on demand.
According to sources, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion would be having an informal meeting with NJPW officials. Marc went on to state that Velasquez has two more matches with AAA Lucha Libre, which has been confirmed and made public by the promotion and Cain himself. He made his debut for the promotion at their Triplemania event.
Velasquez is scheduled to compete for AAA for their upcoming shows at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden on Sunday, September 15th and at the Forum in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, October 13th. It’s rumored that Cain will be going one-on-one against Killer Kross for one or both those shows.

It’s worth noting that on the most recent editions of the popular podcast “Keepin’ It 100” hosted by Konnan, co-hosted by The Disco Inferno, and produced by Joseph Feeney III, Cain was a guest on the show and discussed his love for wrestling. When asked by the Disco Inferno about which style he prefers, Cain did go on to say that while Lucha Libre was his favorite style, he loves the mat wrestling based style which NJPW has a lot of, along with the high flying style that many of his favorites such as Rey Mysterio can do. It was then mentioned that he could be a fit for NJPW’s style due to his mat-based experience. Velasquez has also received training from WWE at their performance center.

Cain has had a wealth of success in his wrestling career all the way back to his days in High School where he had a 110-10 win-loss record in his four years at Kofa High School out of Yuma, AZ, and ultimately having an 86-17 win-loss record Arizona State University, placing him 5th in the nation back in 2005, and then 4th in the nation in 2006. Couple that with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing and striking experience, and now the recent pro wrestling experience, Cain could be a great fit for the King Of Sports in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
