{"id":99436,"date":"2020-12-12T08:47:29","date_gmt":"2020-12-12T13:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/?p=99436"},"modified":"2022-02-02T18:43:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T23:43:32","slug":"washington-football-team-offensive-line-strength","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2020\/12\/12\/washington-football-team-offensive-line-strength\/","title":{"rendered":"The Washington Football Team Offensive Line Is Turning Into a Strength"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t a pretty scene for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams2\/washington\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Football Team<\/a> on October 11th as <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=SmitAl03,SmitAl02&amp;search=Alex+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Smith<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was pummeled by <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DonaAa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Donald<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams2\/rams\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Rams<\/a> pass rush after<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlleKy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Allen<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went down with a shoulder injury. Smith was sacked six times in the game, including Donald leaping onto his back for one. Throughout the game, Donald dominated second-year guard <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MartWe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wes Martin<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, with the return of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ScheBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Scherff<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the additions of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LucaCo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornelius Lucas<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SchwWe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wes Schweitzer<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Washington offensive line has played exceptionally well in their three-game winning streak.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his last five games (four starts), Smith has been sacked just 12 times, with a few due to holding the ball too long. For the most part, Smith has had a clean pocket to move to his second or third read. More impressively, the offensive line has been superb in the run game and on screen passes, showing off their mobility and physicality. Standout rookie running back <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=GibsAn00,GibsAn20&amp;search=Antonio+Gibson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Gibson<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has rushed for 5.0 yards per carry in his last four games (not including this past Monday\u2019s) and has taken advantage of holes created by the line with his development at the running back position. While the line may be one piece away from being a top ten group, Washington\u2019s line has been a crucial piece to their recent success.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Washington Football Team\u2019s Offensive Line is Becoming a Strength<\/h2>\n<h3>The Revamped Left Side of the Washington Offensive Line<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heading into the season, the left side was the biggest question mark on the offensive line. The former third-round pick <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ChriGe01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geron Christian<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the starting left tackle for Washington and Wes Martin was in at left guard. Christian started just two games prior to 2020, struggling for the most part, and Wes Martin filled in well for the injured Brandon Scherff in 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Martin struggled throughout the season and was benched for Wes Schweitzer after Brandon Scherff returned. While Christian held his own at left tackle, he missed the Week 7 game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams2\/cowboys\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Cowboys<\/a> with a knee injury. Cornelius Lucas came in at left tackle and did not allow a sack in his first two games. He became the full-time starter at left tackle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wes Schweitzer has been superb in the run game, playing with physicality in space. However, he has been able to handle the bend of speed rushers off the edge and show off his athleticism, like on the screen below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/BaldyNFL\/status\/1336301252280520709<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff Prove Their Excellence in Contract Years<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drafted in the sixth round in the 2017 draft, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoulCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chase Roullier<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been one of the most underrated centers in the league through his Washington tenure and is inline for a payday this offseason. Just like Schweitzer, Roullier has been excellent in space at the next level. In pass protection, Roullier had allowed just 2.5 sacks in his career heading into this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I think Chase Roullier could help most Washington Football Team fans change their tire and they wouldn&#39;t know it was him. But he&#39;s turned into a serviceable center. Antonio Gibson has had success in the inside zone scheme largely due to the efforts by Scherff and Roullier in the middle. Washington is 4-2 since he returned from injury in week six and Gibson has run for 5.2 yards per carry in those games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Roullier and Scherff will not be cheap this offseason, but Kyle Smith and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RiveRo20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Rivera<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must make them a priority, allowing them to patch holes in other areas, while potentially placing a rookie quarterback in a helpful position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A Rejuvenated Morgan Moses is Playing His Best Football<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having a rough stretch over the last two seasons, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MoseMo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morgan Moses<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been an \u201ciron man\u201d for the Washington Football Team, constantly battling nagging injuries and starting 92 consecutive games. This season, Moses is playing like a top-ten right tackle again. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/washington\/football-team\/washington-ol-morgan-moses-nearly-retired-nfl-after-his-fathers-death\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was ranked as the 23rd best tackle by PFF as of week ten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A key stat for Moses has been his number of holding penalties. After committing ten holding penalties in the last two seasons, Moses has just one this season. With Washington dealing with injuries, Moses also played a position that he hasn\u2019t started at since his days at Virginia.
