{"id":96079,"date":"2020-10-13T18:37:07","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T22:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/?p=96079"},"modified":"2022-02-02T18:43:40","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T23:43:40","slug":"washington-football-team-defensive-struggles-continue-vs-los-angeles-rams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2020\/10\/13\/washington-football-team-defensive-struggles-continue-vs-los-angeles-rams\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington Football Team Defensive Struggles Continue vs Los Angeles Rams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a tumultuous week for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams2\/washington\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Football Team<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the benching of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HaskDw00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dwayne Haskins<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, coach <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RiveRo20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Rivera<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hoped that Washington could go on a run with four NFC games on the horizon, beginning with Sunday&#8217;s game against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams2\/rams\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Rams<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the game did not go as planned as Washington fell 30-10 at FedEx Field. Despite the heroic return of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=SmitAl03,SmitAl02&amp;search=Alex+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Smith<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> following an injury to <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlleKy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Allen<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Washington did not get the spark they needed as Smith was sacked six times and the offense had negative six yards of offense in the second half.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the dismal offensive performance, the highly-touted Washington defense allowed 30 or more points for the fourth consecutive game. While a few of these games could be attributed to the offense, the Rams thrashed Washington in the first half and made plays in the second half when the rain came down. Washington has had question marks in the secondary throughout the season, with the suspect play of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landon Collins<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/ApkeTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Troy Apke<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The linebacking corps also struggled in coverage. Both units must improve in the future if Washington wants to avoid a repeat of previous years: a defensive collapse late in the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Defensive Struggles Continue for Washington Football Team in 30-10 Loss<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Big Plays Continue<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington was torched by the Rams on big plays on Sunday.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/john_keim\/status\/1315378027237343233\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing just four 25+ yard plays in the first four games, Washington allowed four in Sunday&#8217;s game alone. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has been a theme for Washington this season with the huge third-down play by <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/ReagJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Reagor<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Week 1, and the 50-yard touchdown run by <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JackLa00,JackLa02&amp;search=Lamar+Jackson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lamar Jackson<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On Sunday, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WoodRo02,WoodRo21,WoodRo00&amp;search=Robert+Woods&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Woods<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was left wide open for a 56-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Later, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EverGe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerald Everett<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found himself wide open for 40 yards, and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KuppCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cooper Kupp<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beat <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CurlKa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kamren Curl<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a 49-yard gain. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AkerCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Akers<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> capped off the game with a 46-yard run.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Washington entered the game with 4 plays of 25 yards or more allowed this season. They&#39;ve allowed 4 such plays today.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; John Keim (@john_keim) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/john_keim\/status\/1315378027237343233?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like in the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/ManuGr20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Manusky<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defenses of the past, there seemed to be a miscommunication on the first deep ball to Robert Woods. In a zone coverage look,<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FullKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kendall Fuller<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passed Woods onto Landon Collins who was slow getting back, leading to an easy throw and catch for <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GoffJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jared Goff<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Woods. Later in the second quarter, tight ends continued to torch Washington as Everett found himself wide open with <\/span><b>Jon Bostic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Collins in coverage again. Bostic, who struggled in coverage throughout the game, seemed to have his eyes in the backfield on a play-action fake and was caught nowhere near Everett on the big gain. Finally, Kupp had a beautiful route on seventh-round rookie <\/span>Kamren Curl<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for a 49-yard play where Apke made a touchdown-saving tackle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of these big plays stem from the secondary as Apke and Collins have struggled mightily in coverage throughout the year, and the linebackers, other than <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PierKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Pierre-Louis<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lack the speed to guard athletic tight ends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Tight Ends Torch Washington Once Again<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New coordinator, new scheme, and new players, but tight ends continue to be the nemesis of Washington. Despite holding <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HigbTy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Higbee<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to just 12 yards, Gerald Everett had four catches for 90 yards. Just last week, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndrMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Andrews<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had 57 yards and two touchdowns. In Week 1,<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GoedDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Goedert<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had 101 yards. Most of this comes down to the linebackers for Washington. Kevin Pierre-Louis is the fastest in the group, but he struggles in coverage. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DionSh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaun Dion Hamilton<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Washington\u2019s best coverage linebacker, with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviTh20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Davis<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at age 37. However, Dion Hamilton&#8217;s highest snap count heading into Sunday was just 16. Since <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarvJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Harvey-Clemons<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opted out of the 2020 season, Washington doesn\u2019t have an athletic linebacker to cover tight ends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safety duo has also struggled against tight ends. Collins has always been a run-stopping safety, and Apke isn\u2019t the physical presence to cover tight ends in man coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Another Slow Start on Defense<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington has yet to put together a 60 minute game on defense this season. Even in the Week 1 victory against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams2\/eagles\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Eagles<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Philadelphia raced out to a 17-0 lead in the first half. Washington has allowed at least 17 points in the first half each game this season as the Eagles, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams2\/browns\/\" target=\"_self\">Cleveland Browns<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scored 17, while the defense surrendered at least 20 points in the other three games. Most of this damage has come through the air early in games, as Washington has been solid against the run this season, despite ranking 23rd in the league.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a positive note for Washington, this does seem to indicate that the new defensive coordinator, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DelxJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Del Rio<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been successful in terms of the halftime adjustments. There were various concerns regarding adjustments in the <\/span><b>Jay Gruden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regime. Washington has allowed just 9.4 points per game in the second half this season. However, some of this may be due to Washington constantly being behind in the second half. Washington did lead in the second half Week 3 against the Browns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Last Word on the Washington Football Team Defense<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undoubtedly, the biggest problem for Washington is their offense, and their biggest strength is their defensive line. While <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SweaMo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montez Sweat<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had an excellent game against the Rams and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlleJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Allen<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PaynDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Da&#8217;Ron Payne<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>consistently blew up running plays in the backfield, the back-end of the Washington defense must hold up to live up to their potential. Despite the major offensive struggles for Washington, the blueprint for victory is clear: a dominant pass rush paired with winning the turnover battle.
