This article contains a position-by-position 2020 AFC South breakdown for the defense and special teams. The breakdown will contain \u201cthe best\u201d at each unit followed by \u201cthe rest\u201d in descending order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2020 AFC South Breakdown: Defense and Special Teams<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Defensive Line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams\/colts\/\" target=\"_self\">Indianapolis Colts<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams\/titans\/\" target=\"_self\">Tennessee Titans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams\/texans\/\" target=\"_self\">Houston Texans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams\/jaguars\/\" target=\"_self\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of the teams in this division are projected to run a 3-4 base and the other two are in a 4-3 base. Defensive ends in 4-3 schemes are classified as edge rushers in our series so keep that in mind. This does have some effect as to where each teams \u201cdefensive line\u201d ranks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Colts sent their first round pick in the 2020 NFL draft to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams\/49ers\/\" target=\"_self\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> for defensive tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BuckDe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>DeForest Buckner<\/strong><\/a>. Coming off of four solid seasons for the 49ers, Buckner looks to bring that same sack power to Indianapolis. Next to him is<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StewGr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grover Stewart<\/a><\/strong> who is under appreciated in this Colts defensive scheme. He is a space eater upfront that should draw double teams that will free up Buckner to get to the quarterback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Tennessee traded <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CaseJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jurrell Casey<\/a> <\/strong>away this off-season to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams\/broncos\/\" target=\"_self\">Denver Broncos<\/a> there is still means for hope.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneDa04.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DaQuan Jones<\/a> <\/strong>steps into the roll that Casey left behind and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SimmJe01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jeffrey Simmons<\/strong><\/a> slides in at defensive end. To try and sure up the other defensive end position the Titans brought in<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrawJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Crawford<\/a><\/strong> in free agency. He will battle UDFA <strong>Isaiah Mack<\/strong> for starting time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Texans have a lot of potential on the defensive line but not so much promise.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WattJ.00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> J.J. Watt<\/strong><\/a> is clearly the glue holding this thing together from being a complete mess. Second round draft pick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BlacRo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ross Blacklock<\/strong><\/a> appears to be slotted for the inside despite his small size at 290. At the opposite defensive end<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BlacAn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Angelo Blackson<\/a> <\/strong>is a decent starter but nothing teams are scheming for during the week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Jaguars it looks like another down season for the defensive line with all the major losses. Third year defensive tackle <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BryaTa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taven Bryan<\/a><\/strong> has not lived up to this first round billing. Behind him is a world of inexperience with rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HamiDa02.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>DaVon Hamilton<\/strong><\/a> likely being forced into playing time earlier than expected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Edge Rushers\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Indianapolis Colts<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Colts, they are getting the best out of players in the latter part of their careers. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HousJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Houston<\/a><\/strong> is going into his tenth year still looks like a disruptive force upfront. He should get some added help from third year defensive end <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TuraKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kemoko Turay<\/a><\/strong>. If reports from training camp hold true, Turay appears to be turning it on and getting after the quarterback often.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee would be first one this list if it was not for the uncertainty surrounding <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BeasVi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vic Beasley<\/a><\/strong>. After showing up 10 days late to camp he was put on the Non Football injury list putting him way behind.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LandHa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harold Landry<\/a><\/strong> should be a problem for quarterbacks this year after registering nine sacks last season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MercWh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whitney Mercilus<\/a> <\/strong>is a presence coming off the edge for the Texans but has not seen more than seven sacks since 2015. That does not bode well for the defense\u2019s success at reaching the quarterback.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ScarBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brennan Scarlett<\/a> <\/strong>is barely worth mentioning coming off the other side with 3.5 sacks last season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tank is on in Jacksonville and it was made very clear with the trade of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NgakYa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yannick Ngakoue<\/a><\/strong>. That leaves second year player <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=AlleJo02,AlleJo03,AlleJo00&amp;search=Josh+Allen&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Allen<\/a> <\/strong>as the only real threat to get to the quarterback. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmooDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dawuane Smoot<\/a><\/strong> did have six sacks last season but has nowhere near the impact of Ngakoue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Linebacker<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Indianapolis Colts\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since outside linebackers are considered edge rushers in this piece that does sway the rankings. Colts take top honors with the tackling machines they have in the middle of the field. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LeonDa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Darius Leonard<\/strong><\/a> lived up to his maniac moniker last year racking up 121 total tackles. Outshining him slightly with 124 tackles is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WalkAn01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Walker<\/a><\/strong> who is also a rising star. Completing the core is second year linebacker <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/O\/OkerBo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Okereke<\/a><\/strong> who in limited time managed 65 total tackles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee would be in the top spot if outside linebackers were grouped into linebackers and not edge rusher. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BrowJa06.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jayon Brown<\/a> <\/strong>has emerged onto the NFL as one of the best off ball linebackers. Look for a big year from Brown as 2020 will be a contract year for him. Next to him is<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EvanRa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rashaan Evans<\/a><\/strong> who going into his third season appears for bigger things in this defense. Both linebackers totaled over 100 combined tackles individually and should improve those dramatically this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CunnZa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Cunningham<\/a><\/strong> just signed a 58 million dollar extension after exploding for 142 total tackles last season. Cunningham is normally known for his coverage ability in the past but led the NFL in run stops in 2019. He forms one of the best duos in the league with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McKiBe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Benardrick Mckinney<\/strong><\/a>. Mckinney is one of the most consistent linebackers in the league who never seems to miss a tackle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacksonville appeared to be gearing up its defense for a better run in 2019 after signing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SchoJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Schobert<\/a><\/strong>. Never the most talented linebacker in the league but seems to have a nose for the football. He had five turnovers last season for the Cleveland Browns and four of them being interceptions. Schobert allows Jacksonville to move <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackMy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myles Jack<\/a><\/strong> to the weak side where he has been more comfortable in the past. It allows him to make more plays around the ball where he thrives on his athletic ability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cornerback<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Tennessee Titans<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee did lose<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RyanLo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Logan Ryan<\/a><\/strong> this off season but there is still talent on the roster. They have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackAd00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Adoree&#8217; Jackson<\/strong><\/a> who has developed nicely into less of a gadget player and more legitimate corner. Opposite him will likely be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ButlMa01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Malcom Butler<\/strong><\/a> who is coming off less than stellar play compared to years past. He is a savvy veteran so he knows how to set up quarterbacks into bad throws. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoseJo20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jonhathan Joseph<\/strong><\/a> joins the team but at his age he does not appear anything more than a depth addition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RhodXa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavier Rhodes<\/a> <\/strong>is looking to redeem himself after flaming out in Minnesota. He has definitely lost a step at his age but could fit better into the Colts zone scheme. Starting opposite him should be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/Y\/Ya-SRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rock Ya-Sin<\/a> <\/strong>who played much improved in the second half of 2019.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CarrTr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> T.J. Carrie<\/strong><\/a> comes over from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/nfl-teams\/colts\/\" target=\"_self\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> and should be more of a dime corner with<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=MoorKe03,MoorKe00&amp;search=Kenny+Moore&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Moore<\/a> <\/strong>holding down the slot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston re-signed corner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobyBr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bradley Roby<\/strong><\/a> after having a productive 2019 season with two interceptions and eight PBUs. He is joined by<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HargVe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vernon Hargreaves<\/a> <\/strong>III and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ConlGa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gareon Conley<\/a> <\/strong>who were added mid way through last season. Neither corner is exceptionally good so expect a lot of big gains against this secondary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Had this article been written a few years ago Jacksonville would be the tops in this category. Long gone are corners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BouyA.00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>A.J. Boyue<\/strong><\/a> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RamsJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Ramsey<\/a><\/strong> who would have been a nasty duo in the secondary. Now rookie<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HendCJ00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> C.J. Henderson<\/strong><\/a> is trusted into the tough position of being the number one guy right away. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HernTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tre Herndon<\/a><\/strong> will start opposite him in the secondary with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HaydDJ00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>D.J. Hayden<\/strong><\/a> playing the nickel. When healthy Hayden is one of the best at his position in the slot. Veteran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BrocTr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tramaine Brock<\/strong><\/a> provides some depth after some COVID-19 opt outs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Tennessee Titans<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criminally underrated<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ByarKe01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Byard<\/a><\/strong> leads the Tennessee secondary into the 2020 season. He is lethal from the safety position securing five interceptions last season and totaling 84 tackles to boot.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VaccKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Vaccaro<\/a> <\/strong>joins Byard in a unit that had 11 dropped interceptions last year tied for second worst in the NFL. Had they secured those 11 interceptions they would have tied for first in takeaways. If they can improve this number by any means, the Titans should return to the playoffs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be honest the Texans and Colts could be flipped when it comes to their safety talent on the rosters.
