The breakdown will contain \u201cthe best\u201d at each position followed by \u201cthe rest\u201d in descending order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2020 NFC West Breakdown by Position: Defense\/Special Teams<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Defensive Line<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/packers\/\" target=\"_self\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest:<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/rams\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Los Angeles Rams<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/cardinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Arizona Cardinals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/seahawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle Seahawks<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the loss of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BuckDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeForest Buckner<\/a> <\/strong>and the lack of a player the likes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DonaAa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Donald<\/a><\/strong>, the 49ers defensive line depth has them on top in the division. The 49ers return <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/ArmsAr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arik Armstead<\/a><\/strong>, who had ten sacks last season, and drafted <strong>Javon Kinlaw<\/strong> in the first round. Kinlaw is a little bit raw coming out of South Carolina, but should be able to contribute his rookie season. Although he did not live up to the billing of a third overall pick, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomSo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solomon Thomas<\/a><\/strong> should be a solid player on the interior along with<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneD.01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D.J. Jones<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right behind the 49ers are the Rams who are led by Aaron Donald and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BrocMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Brockers<\/a><\/strong>. Donald is the best defensive player in football and has been a first-team all-pro in his last five seasons and had 20 sacks in 2018. After Donald, Michael Brockers returns to Los Angeles for his ninth season with the Rams. Last season, Brockers had three tackles for loss and three sacks. Brockers is very stout against the run, just like his teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobiAS00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A\u2019Shawn Robinson<\/a> who came over from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/lions\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Lions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals made a big move in the off-season to sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PhilJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Phillips<\/a><\/strong> who had 9.5 sacks last season with 13 tackles for loss. While Phillips provides the pass rush, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeteCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Peters<\/a> <\/strong>is the run-stuffer in the middle for the Cardinals. Peters had 38 tackles last season. After that, it gets dicey for the Cardinals as they will rely on young players like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlleZa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zach Allen<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Leki Fotu<\/strong>, and <strong>Rashard Lawrence<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a down season in 2019, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/ReedJa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarran Reed<\/a><\/strong> looks to regain his 2018 play after just two sacks last season. The Seahawks are thin at the line behind Reed as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FordPo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poona Ford<\/a> <\/strong>is the other defensive tackle. After the 53-man rosters are set the Seahawks should be in the market for help along the line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Edge Rushers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: San Francisco 49ers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a talented pair of edge rushers in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FordDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dee Ford<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BosaNi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Bosa<\/a><\/strong>, the 49ers may have the best edge duo in the league. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/bayarea\/49ers\/how-49ers-rookie-nick-bosa-made-pff-history-superb-2019-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bosa had nine sacks last season and had 80 pressures with 18 QB hits. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entering his second season, Bosa is already a premier pass rusher in the league. In addition to Bosa, Ford had 6.5 sacks last year in just 11 games. These numbers may seem low, but with Armstead having eight sacks, and Buckner with 7.5, there were lots of members to split with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since being traded from New England in 2016,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JoneCh03,JoneCh07&amp;search=Chandler+Jones&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chandler Jones<\/a><\/strong> has been a first-team all-pro twice and has had 17 plus sacks twice, including 19 last season. Last season, he also led the league with eight forced fumbles. Opposite of Jones, the Cardinals signed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KennDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devon Kennard<\/a>,<\/strong> who had seven sacks last season with the Lions. With Jones being the focal point Kennard could have a big season in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rams lost<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FowlDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dante Fowler Jr.<\/a><\/strong> in free agency and are now relying on<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FloyLe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leonard Floyd<\/a><\/strong> to be the lead rusher. Floyd had three sacks last year with the Bears and seven in his rookie season. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gregbeacham\/status\/1295787926081527808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1295787926081527808%7Ctwgr%5E&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Framblinfan.com%2F2020%2F08%2F18%2Fla-rams-news-olb-leonard-floyd-leads-surprising-lb-surge-in-2020%2F\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been positive reports about Floyd in training camp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Behind Floyd, it should be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EbukSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samson Ebukam<\/a><\/strong>. He had 4.5 sacks last season in just five starts. Another key pass-rushing piece for the Rams is <strong>Terrell Lewis<\/strong>, a third-round pick from Alabama. He had six sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss in his last season at Alabama.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the loss of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ClowJa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jadeveon Clowney<\/a><\/strong>, the Seahawks are thin at edge rusher with the projected starters to be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GreeRa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rasheem Green<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MayoBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benson Mayowa<\/a><\/strong>. Mayowa had seven sacks with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/raiders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Las Vegas Raiders <\/a>last year, while Green had four in Seattle. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollLJ00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L.J. Collier<\/a><\/strong>, the former first-rounder, also looks to make an impact after a disappointing rookie campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Linebacker<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Seattle Seahawks<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Seahawks have had a premier linebacker core for almost the past decade. They have the best middle linebacker in football in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WagnBo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Wagner<\/a><\/strong>, who has been a first-team all-pro the last four seasons. In addition to<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WrigK.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K.J. Wright<\/a><\/strong>, who is coming off of a career-high in tackles and interceptions, the Seahawks added youth to the linebacking core by selecting Jordyn Brooks in the first round of the 2020 draft. The Seahawks also brought back <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/I\/IrviBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Irvin<\/a><\/strong>, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewstribune.com\/sports\/nfl\/seattle-seahawks\/article245230045.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pete Carroll called\u00a0 the best strongside linebacker they have had in the past decade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although Wright and Wagner are over the age of 30, they are still excellent linebackers, who should produce at a similar level in 2020. In addition to the starters, the Seahawks also have depth in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BartCo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cody Barton<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurrBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Burr-Kirven.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right behind the Seahawks, are the 49ers. The 49ers have another excellent linebacker group as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WarnFr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fred Warner<\/a><\/strong> was one of the best coverage linebackers as he had nine passes defended last season. They also return former pro-bowler <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlexKw00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kwon Alexander<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GreeDr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dre Greenlaw<\/a><\/strong>, who filled in well for Alexander last season. Alexander is another excellent linebacker in coverage, and Greenlaw, who is another solid piece in coverage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pff.com\/news\/nfl-rankings-the-nfls-top-25-linebackers-ahead-of-the-2020-nfl-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">missed just four tackles last season<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals also bolstered their linebacker corps in the off-season by drafting <strong>Isaiah Simmons<\/strong> eighth overall and signing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CampDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">De&#8217;Vondre Campbell<\/a><\/strong>. Simmons is 6\u20194&#8243;, 230 and ran a 4.39 40-yard dash. He should excel in coverage, and be all over the field in his rookie season. In addition to Simmons, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HickJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Hicks<\/a><\/strong> returns to the Cardinals, who had 150 tackles last season. The Campbell signing bolsters the linebacking corps as he forced three fumbles and had five passes defended last season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LittCo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cory Littleton<\/a><\/strong> signed with the Oakland Raiders and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/29788171\/los-angeles-rams-lose-linebacker-travin-howard-season-torn-meniscus-left-knee\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travin Howard tore his meniscus<\/a>, the Rams are thin at the linebacker position. The presumptive starters are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KiseMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micah Kiser<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/Y\/YounKe03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Young<\/a><\/strong>. Kiser did not play a snap last season and Young had just four tackles in nine games with the Rams last season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Cornerback<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Seattle Seahawks,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may be one of the best divisions at the cornerback position as each team has talent. Despite not having the top-end talent of some other teams, the Seahawks added another solid cornerback in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DunbQu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quinton Dunbar<\/a><\/strong>. Dunbar adds on to a talented cornerback group with pro-bowler <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GrifSh00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaquill Griffin<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FlowTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tre Flowers<\/a><\/strong>. Griffin has the first corner spot, but Flowers and Dunbar are battling for the second, after a tumultuous offseason for Dunbar. Dunbar, a former wide receiver, broke out last season despite battling injuries. He had four interceptions and eight passes defended in just 11 games. In the playoffs, Flowers struggled, but he offers versatility to the Seahawks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rams have a premier cornerback in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RamsJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Ramsey<\/a><\/strong>. Despite losing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobeNi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nickell Robey-Coleman<\/a><\/strong>, the Rams still have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HillTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Troy Hill<\/a><\/strong>, who emerged as a reliable corner in nine starts last season with two interceptions. In addition to Hill, the Rams have a talented young corner in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillDa09.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darious Williams<\/a><\/strong>, who should get significant playing time in 2020. The Rams have plenty of talent in the defensive backfield, but need some more depth near the bottom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 49ers &#8211; the number one pass defense from a year ago &#8211; bring back pro-bowler <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SherRi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Sherman<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillKW00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K\u2019Waun Williams<\/a><\/strong>. Despite a rough Super Bowl, Sherman had an excellent season last year with 11 passes defended and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pff.com\/news\/nfl-49ers-richard-sherman-pff-best-coverage-defender-2019#:~:text=We%20recently%20named%20him%20as,in%20terms%20of%20coverage%20grade.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">52.9% completion percentage against.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Williams is excellent in the slot, and plays well at his 5\u20199&#8243; frame. Opposite of Sherman, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ninerswire.usatoday.com\/2020\/08\/19\/49ers-training-camp-battles-cornerback-depth-chart\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is a competition between<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MoseEm00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Emmanuel Moseley<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VerrJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Verrett<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WithAh00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ahkello Witherspoon<\/a><\/strong>. The only issue with the 49ers corner group is their reliance on zone coverage. They are one of the best zone teams in the league, but must improve in man coverage as the Super Bowl made evident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PetePa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Patrick Peterson<\/strong><\/a> may be the best cornerback of the past decade. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/29683386\/cardinals-cb-robert-alford-season-torn-pec-source-says\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the injury to <\/span><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlfoRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Alford<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a hole at the second cornerback position. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MurpBy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Byron Murphy<\/a><\/strong> should be in the slot after an up-and-down rookie campaign and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeteKe01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Peterson<\/a><\/strong> should compete for a starting job. The Cardinals signed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KirkDr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dre Kirkpatrick<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrawKe02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Crawley<\/a><\/strong>, but they need someone to step up in Alford\u2019s absence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Safety<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Seattle Seahawks<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Los Angeles Rams, Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a blockbuster trade, the Seahawks changed the complexion of the 2020 NFC West when they acquired star safety <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AdamJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamal Adams<\/a> <\/strong>to pair with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DiggQu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quandre Diggs<\/a><\/strong> at the backend of the defense. With an already solid safety duo, the Seahawks have a safety pair akin to the \u201cLegion of Boom\u201d with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ThomEa99,ThomEa00&amp;search=Earl+Thomas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Earl Thomas<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ChanKa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kam Chancellor<\/a>.<\/strong> Adams was a first-team all-pro last season with 6.5 sacks and seven passes defended. Diggs had three interceptions in just five games last year in Seattle. This allows Seattle to move around Jamal Adams all around the defense, and allow Diggs to play \u201ccenter field.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rams and Cardinals are in a similar spot at the safety positions. Despite only playing six games last season, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnJo10,JohnJo21,JohnJo22&amp;search=John+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Johnson<\/a><\/strong> has been excellent thus far with 119 tackles and 22 passes defended in his first two seasons. With Johnson\u2019s injuries, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RappTa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taylor Rapp<\/a><\/strong> burst onto the scene with eight passes defended and two interceptions. Another young safety for the Rams is Terrell Burgess, who was drafted in the third round in the 2020 draft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals have a talented safety tandem of their own.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/cardinals-make-budda-baker-nf-ls-highestpaid-safety-with-59-m-extension-143236808.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After signing a $59 million extension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BakeBu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Budda Baker<\/a> <\/strong>hopes to continue his excellent play into 2020. Last season, Baker had 104 solo tackles, and seven tackles for loss last season in a pro bowl season. Paired with Baker, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomJa04.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Thompson<\/a><\/strong> played well last season after being selected in the fifth round of the supplemental draft. <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoseVa20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vance Joseph<\/a><\/strong> had great things to say about Thompson.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thompson passed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomDe06.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deionte Thompson<\/a><\/strong> last year, who should be the third safety on the roster. The Cardinals could move up on the list with more experience from Thompson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placing the 49ers this low may be rough, but they don\u2019t have the same upside as the other groups. The 49ers are solid at the safety position. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WardJi01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmie Ward<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TartJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaquiski Tartt<\/a><\/strong> are veteran safety who won\u2019t make a splashy play, but are dependable starters. They both have combined for just five interceptions in their careers. However, Ward\u2019s range is excellent in the defensive backfield and Tartt is reliable all around.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Special Teams<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best: Arizona Cardinals<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the punting position, the 2020 NFC West is one of the best in the league. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GonzZa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zane Gonzalez<\/a><\/strong> had an excellent 2019 season for the Cardinals. He had an 88.6 percent accuracy and made both of his kicks from 50 plus yards. At the punter spot, the Cardinals are excellent as well as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LeexAn20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Lee<\/a><\/strong> was second in yards per punt last season. Next, is the Los Angeles Rams, who have one of the better punters in the NFL in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HekkJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Hekker<\/a><\/strong>. Hekker had 47.4 yards per punt last season, and has averaged 47.0 yards per punt over his career. The Rams added <strong>Samuel Sloman<\/strong> in the seventh round, and he should be their kicker after making 86.7 percent of his attempts in his senior year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a pro bowl season in 2019, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MyerJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Myers<\/a> <\/strong>came down a bit last season as he made 82.1 percent of his kicks for the Seahawks. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DickMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Dickson<\/a><\/strong> also came down after an all-pro 2018, with only 45.2 yards per punt. The 49ers could easily be in the top spot in the division with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JameRi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richie James<\/a><\/strong> Jr. as a returner, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/gouldrob01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robbie Gould<\/a><\/strong> at kicker.
