The breakdown will contain \u201cthe best\u201d at each unit followed by \u201cthe rest\u201d in descending order.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/08\/28\/2020-nfc-north-breakdown-by-position-offenses\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFC North Breakdown by Position: Offense<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>2020 NFC North Defense and Special Teams<\/h2>\n<h3>Defensive Line<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/bears\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Bears<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/packers\/\" target=\"_self\">Green Bay Packers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/vikings\/\" target=\"_self\">Minnesota Vikings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/category\/nfl-teams\/lions\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Lions<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bears defenses have a longstanding reputation and the current iteration is no different. An elite run-stuffing group, they really missed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HickAk00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Akiem Hicks<\/a><\/strong> in the middle for much of last year. This year, they\u2019ll be without nose tackle <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GoldEd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Goldman<\/a><\/strong> but should have the depth to withstand it. That would mean starter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NichBi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bilal Nichols<\/a><\/strong> and reserve <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobeRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roy Robertson-Harris<\/a><\/strong> need to step up their play after up-and-down campaigns in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ClarKe01,ClarKe22&amp;search=Kenny+Clark&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Clark<\/a><\/strong> is the perfect example of the modern NFL nose tackle; stout against the run but still able to push the pocket. That\u2019s why the Packers rewarded him with a four-year, $70 million extension. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LancTy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Lancaster<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LowrDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dean Lowry<\/a><\/strong> provide nice depth even though they are a bit one-dimensional.<\/p>\n<p>Detroit and Minnesota are in the back but it isn\u2019t really a knock as much as a referendum on how talented this division is in the trenches. Minnesota lost <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoseLi99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Linval Joseph<\/a><\/strong> and will count on former Baltimore Raven <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PierMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Pierce<\/a><\/strong> and improvement from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StepSh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shamar Stephen<\/a><\/strong>. Detroit needs <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShelDa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Shelton<\/a><\/strong> to be more consistent than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobiAS00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>A\u2019Shawn Robinson<\/strong><\/a> but, even more, they need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HandDa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Da\u2019Shawn Hand<\/strong><\/a> to have a bounceback season.<\/p>\n<h3>EDGE<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best: Green Bay Packers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest: Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Green Bay\u2019s defense went through years of lethargy before being revitalized last season by the arrival of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitZa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Za\u2019Darius<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitPr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Preston Smith<\/a><\/strong>. The duo combined for 25.5 sacks and Green Bay expects more from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GaryRa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rashan Gary<\/a><\/strong> (2.0 sacks) in his second year in Titletown. How much they will miss <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FackKy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyler Fackrell<\/a><\/strong> (New York Giants) will be something to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears have one of the best individual pass-rushers in the NFL in Mack but they have lacked a compliment for him on the edges. Enter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/Q\/QuinRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Quinn<\/a><\/strong> who takes over for the departed and disappointing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FloyLe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leonard Floyd<\/a><\/strong>. Quinn has had the best <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/espn-ranks-robert-quinn-one-213809320.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pass-Rush Win Rate<\/a> in the NFL over the last two years. Chicago is hoping that offsets any deficiencies he has against the run.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HuntDa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danielle Hunter<\/a><\/strong> has statistically been the best pass rusher in the division over the past two years, posting back to back 14.5-sack seasons. This year, he will have to do it alone after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GrifEv99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Everson Griffen<\/a><\/strong> moved on to the Dallas Cowboys. Detroit\u2019s premier EDGE defender is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FlowTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trey Flowers<\/a><\/strong>. The former New England Patriot was reunited with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/coaches\/PatrMa0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Matt Patricia<\/strong><\/a> but is more of an all-around end than true pass-rusher. At any rate, he\u2019s Detroit\u2019s lone threat.<\/p>\n<h3>Linebackers<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best: Minnesota Vikings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KendEr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eric Kendricks<\/strong><\/a> had a case for Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 as he led all linebackers with 12 pass deflections as part of a standout year. He is flanked on one side by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BarrAn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Barr<\/a><\/strong>, one of the most versatile linebackers in the game. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WilsEr00,WilsEr20&amp;search=Eric+Wilson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Wilson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GedeBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Gedeon<\/a><\/strong> will compete to man the other side but all that means is the Vikings have a very good backup.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago lost some important depth this off-season, as reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KwiaNi00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nick Kwiatkoski<\/strong><\/a> left for a bigger deal and role with the Las Vegas Raiders. That means <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TrevDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Trevathan<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitRo07.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roquan Smith<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s health is extremely important. Neither played a full season last year, but there aren\u2019t many more talented duos.<\/p>\n<p>Detroit is adding another former Patriot in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamie Collins<\/a><\/strong> to a group that has routinely underperformed. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviJa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarrad Davis<\/a><\/strong> has been unimpressive in his short career and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TavaJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jahlani Tavai<\/a><\/strong> is still much better against the run than the pass.<\/p>\n<h3>Cornerback<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best: Detroit Lions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest: Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Detroit has committed resources to their cornerback position, one of the few things copied from the Patriots that has staying power. They traded a disgruntled <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SlayDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darius Slay<\/a><\/strong> to the Philadelphia Eagles but replaced him with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TrufDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Desmond Trufant<\/a><\/strong>, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons. It is a slight downgrade but opposite him, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/O\/OkudJe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Okudah<\/a><\/strong> is a definite upgrade making the moves a net positive. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ColeJu01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Coleman<\/a><\/strong> is very steady in the slot.<\/p>\n<p>Bears corner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=FullKy00,FullKy01&amp;search=Kyle+Fuller&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Fuller<\/a><\/strong> has been one of the best in the league for a few years but is coming off a down year where he allowed better than 70 percent of passes thrown his way to be completed. Opposite him will be either second-round pick <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JohnJa13.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylon Johnson<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ToliKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Toliver<\/a><\/strong> who hasn\u2019t distinguished himself in two years. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurnAr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artie Burns<\/a><\/strong> opened camp as a starter but tore his ACL.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlexJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaire Alexander<\/a><\/strong> is arguably the best corner in the division but he is all by himself. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KingKe01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin King<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Jackson<\/a><\/strong> are both still trying to prove they belong. Minnesota might have led this section at this time last season. But they revamped the position and will be counting on two rookies in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GladJe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Gladney<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DantCa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cameron Dantzler<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Safety<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Best: Minnesota Vikings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest: Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitHa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harrison Smith<\/a><\/strong> is arguably the best in the business and his running mate <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=HarrAn01,HarrAn20&amp;search=Anthony+Harris&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Harris<\/a><\/strong> has emerged as a terrific running mate. Together, they combined for 145 tackles, nine interceptions, three forced fumbles, and three recoveries. Smith has been a Pro Bowler each of the last five seasons while Harris\u2019 play earned him the franchise tag from Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AmosAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adrian Amos<\/a><\/strong> defected to the Packers from the Bears and he now forms one of the better young duos in the NFL with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SavaDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darnell Savage<\/a><\/strong>. Amos matched a career-high with two interceptions and Savage pitched in two of his own and added two forced fumbles. This group will only improve.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JackEd01,JackEd20&amp;search=Eddie+Jackson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Jackson<\/a><\/strong> is the second-best safety in the NFC North but, like some other on this list, he is all by himself.
