As they begin preparation for the 2020 NFL season, here are the top five Chiefs position groups.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Top Position Groups

5. Quarterback

The quarterback room features the NFL’s richest player in Patrick Mahomes. He alone could give the Chiefs’ quarterback position a spot on this list, but it’s the depth of the position group that gets them here. Backing up Mahomes is Matt Moore. Moore filled in when Mahomes was injured in 2019, even winning a game. Also on the roster is NFL journeyman Chad Henne and former XFL star Jordan Ta’amu. With quality depth and a superstar at the top, the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterbacks will once again be successful.

4. Defensive Tackle

Kansas City made headlines this summer when they paid defensive tackle Chris Jones a four-year, $85 million contract extension. He is coming off of a season where he had nine sacks and eight tackles for loss. Jones is a big reason the Chiefs’ defensive tackles find themselves on this list. However, Chris Jones is not alone on the defensive front. Joining him is emerging defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi. Nnadi has shown flashes of potential since being a third-round pick in 2018. Everything points to a breakout campaign in 2020. Together, Jones and Nnadi form a stout pairing inside for the Kansas City Chiefs.

3. Safety

Kansas City’s safety position group is headlined by 2020 1st-team All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu. A do-it-all member of the Chiefs secondary, Mathieu is a vocal leader for the entire Chiefs defense. Joining Mathieu on the back end are Juan Thornhill and Daniel Sorensen. Thornhill was only a rookie last year and emerged as a solid starter before tearing his ACL in December. After the injury, Sorensen filled in, proving to be a solid starter in his own right. With three starters at the position and special teams backups like Tedric Thompson and Armani Watts, the safety position is one of the most well rounded on the Kansas City Chiefs.

2. Offensive Tackle

Kansas City’s offensive tackle duo is arguably the best in the NFL. Mitchell Schwartz is a three-time All-Pro on the right side while former 2013 number one overall pick Eric Fisher is on the left side. The two bookends do a great job protecting Mahomes, but that alone is not why they are near the top of this list. The free-agent addition of Mike Remmers was a move that flew under the radar, but he provides quality depth to the Chiefs’ offensive tackle position. Remmers has started all but seven games over the past five years for the Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants. If anything were to happen to either of the starters, Kansas City would have a more than capable backup.

1. Wide Receiver

The most talented position group on the 2020 Kansas City Chiefs entering the season is the wide receivers. Depth is what makes the wide receiver position Kansas City’s top position group. The Chiefs return their top four wideouts led by two-time former All-Pro Tyreek Hill. The prevailing theme in the Chiefs’ wide receiver room is speed, as Hill, Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, and Demarcus Robinson are among the fastest at their position in the NFL. All four had at least 400 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns, and 12 yards per catch in 2019. The Chiefs’ top position group will look to continue making exciting plays for the ‘Legion of Zoom’ in 2020.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Training camp is underway for the Kansas City Chiefs.
