This breakdown will contain \u201cthe best\u201d at each position followed by \u201cthe rest\u201d in descending order.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/08\/08\/2020-afc-east-breakdown-offense\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>AFC East Breakdown By Position: The Offense<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>AFC East Breakdown By Position: The Defense<\/h2>\n<h4>Defensive Line<\/h4>\n<p>The Best: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Bills<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Rest: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/patriots\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Patriots<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/dolphins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Dolphins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams2\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Jets<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Buffalo Bills are the clear frontrunners in this regard, although nobody in the division has an elite defensive line by any means. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HughJe99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry Hughes<\/a><\/strong> is still as effective as ever and has quietly been one of the team&#8217;s best acquisitions of the past decade. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AddiMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Addison<\/a><\/strong>, meanwhile, is a fine starter while rookie defensive lineman <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/02\/28\/a-j-epenesa-2020-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>A.J. Epenesa<\/strong><\/a> has the raw talent to step in and contribute right away.<\/p>\n<p>The New England Patriots have a great interior duo in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GuyxLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lawrence Guy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ButlAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Butler<\/a><\/strong>, but the edge is a major question. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WinoCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chase Winovich<\/a><\/strong> looked good in a small sample last year, but only time will tell if he can handle starting duties. The Dolphins had perhaps the worst defensive line in the league last year, but free agent additions like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VanNKy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Van Noy<\/a><\/strong> should improve the unit. The Jets, meanwhile, better hope that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillQu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quinnen Williams<\/a><\/strong> can start playing as he did back at Alabama.<\/p>\n<h4>Linebackers<\/h4>\n<p>The Best: Buffalo Bills<\/p>\n<p>The Rest: Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets<\/p>\n<p>Despite the missed tackles, the Buffalo Bills still managed to have the best linebackers in the division. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdmuTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tremaine Edmunds<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MilaMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Milano<\/a><\/strong> are both above-average starters, with Edmunds showing notable growth during his second season. Milano, meanwhile, is one of the better coverage linebackers in the league, which is far more valuable than tackling.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the linebacker corps in the division are underwhelming, to say the least. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McMiRa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raekwon McMillan<\/a><\/strong> had a solid year, and the addition of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobeEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elandon Roberts<\/a><\/strong> should help the run defense in Miami. The Patriots won\u2019t have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamie Collins<\/a>, <\/strong>Kyle Van Noy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HighDo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dont\u2019a Hightower<\/strong><\/a>, or Elandon Roberts in 2020. Ready or not, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BentJa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ja\u2019Whaun Bentley<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s show. The Jets lost <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=MoslC.00,MoslC.20&amp;search=C.J.+Mosley&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C.J. Mosley<\/a><\/strong>, but they made do without him for most of the 2019 season.<\/p>\n<h4>Cornerbacks<\/h4>\n<p>The Best: New England Patriots<\/p>\n<p>The Rest: Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets<\/p>\n<p>Top to bottom, the New England Patriots probably have the best group of cornerbacks in the league. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GilmSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Gilmore<\/a><\/strong> is the best in the league, while guys like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackJ.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.C. Jackson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCoJa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason McCourty<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneJo03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Jones<\/a><\/strong> are all above-average starters. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillJo13.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joejuan Williams<\/a> <\/strong>looked good in limited playing time and provides valuable depth in case injury strikes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneBy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Byron Jones<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HowaXa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavien Howard<\/a><\/strong> are not better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HighDo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tre\u2019Davious White<\/strong><\/a>. However, their combined skills, along with the promise of first-round pick <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/04\/16\/noah-igbinoghene-2020-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Noah Igbinoghene<\/strong><\/a>, give them the second spot on this list. As previously mentioned, Tre\u2019Davious White has a good case to be the second-best cornerback in football. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WallLe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Levi Wallace<\/a> <\/strong>is a fine starter and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=NormJo01,NormJo00&amp;search=Josh+Norman&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Norman<\/a><\/strong> is a worthy redemption project, if nothing else. The Jets don\u2019t deserve to be included on this list.<\/p>\n<h4>Safeties<\/h4>\n<p>The Best: Buffalo Bills<\/p>\n<p>The Rest: New England Patriots, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins<\/p>\n<p>The starting safety duo of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HydeMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micah Hyde<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PoyeJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Poyer<\/a><\/strong> is arguably the best in the league. These two excel in just about every type of coverage and are a key reason for Buffalo\u2019s defensive success over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The Patriots could\u2019ve challenged for the top spot if <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ChunPa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Chung<\/a><\/strong> didn\u2019t opt out. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCoDe99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devin McCourty<\/a><\/strong> is still a great player, but they\u2019ll need to find someone to fill Chung&#8217;s role, especially with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarmDu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duron Harmon<\/a><\/strong> in Detroit. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/03\/25\/kyle-dugger-2020-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kyle Dugger<\/strong><\/a> profiles as a Chung replacement, but can the second-round pick make an impact that quickly?<\/p>\n<p>Trading <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AdamJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamal Adams<\/a><\/strong> is a good way to fall down this list. Fortunately for New York, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MayeMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Maye<\/a><\/strong> is still good and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McDoBr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bradley McDougald<\/a><\/strong> is a solid player. The Dolphins take last place again, as both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoweEr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Rowe<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCaBo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby McCain<\/a><\/strong> are nothing to write home about.<\/p>\n<h4>Special Teams<\/h4>\n<p>The Best: New England Patriots<\/p>\n<p>The Rest: New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins<\/p>\n<p>Nobody cares about special teams more than <strong>Bill Belichick<\/strong>. Even without<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GostSt20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Gostkowski<\/a><\/strong>, it\u2019s hard to bet against his hand-chosen successor. Additionally, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BailJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Bailey<\/a><\/strong> looked like the real deal as a rookie, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SlatMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Slater<\/a><\/strong> is still around to lead the coverage team.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Jets have a solid kicker and punter and actually finished as the fourth-best special teams unit, per Football Outsiders\u2019 DVOA.
