The New England Patriots had a league-high seven players opt out, which means that there are some dramatic changes to the Patriots roster projection.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the new CBA technically allows for 55 men on the roster, but I\u2019m doing a 53-man list. Per the fine print, the roster needs to be cut down to 53 players at first, with two additional practice squad players having the ability to go from the active roster to the practice squad without getting cut.<\/p>\n<h2>New England Patriots Roster Projection 3.0 &#8211; Post-COVID Opt Outs<\/h2>\n<h4>Quarterback (3)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No changes here, as all three quarterbacks are going to play the upcoming season. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=NewtCa00,NewtCa20&amp;search=Cam+Newton&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Newton<\/a><\/strong> is still the presumed starter, but head coach <strong>Bill Belichick<\/strong> says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/29572970\/bill-belichick-cam-newton-win-patriots-starting-qb-job\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he needs to win the job<\/a> in camp. This leaves the door open for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StidJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarrett Stidham<\/a> <\/strong>to win the job, although it would be an absolute shock if he pulls it off. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HoyeBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Hoyer<\/a><\/strong> is still there as valuable insurance and a well of knowledge from his time in the system.<\/p>\n<h4>Running Back\/Fullback (5)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Sony Michel, James White, Damien Harris, Rex Burkhead, Jakob Johnson<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VitaDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Vitale<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BoldBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Bolden<\/a><\/strong> both made the first iteration of this list, but both players opted out of the 2020 season. The incumbent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JohnJa12.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jakob Johnson<\/a><\/strong> takes Vitale\u2019s spot, although it\u2019s easy to see him splitting snaps with tight end <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/06\/08\/new-england-patriots-sleepers-dalton-keene\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dalton Keene<\/strong><\/a>. Bolden\u2019s spot remains vacated, as he primarily serves on special teams and there isn\u2019t another running back on the roster fit to fill that role.<\/p>\n<p>The other four names on the list are the obvious ones. Assuming he\u2019s healthy, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MichSo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sony Michel<\/a><\/strong> will continue to be the early-down running back with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WhitJa02,WhitJa20&amp;search=James+White&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James White<\/a><\/strong> coming in on passing downs. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrDa06.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Damien Harris<\/a><\/strong> will be Michel\u2019s primary backup and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurkRe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rex Burkhead<\/a><\/strong> shall once again be the jack of all trades.<\/p>\n<h4>Wide Receiver (7)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Julian Edelman, N&#8217;Keal Harry, Mohamed Sanu, Jakobi Meyers, Matthew Slater, Damiere Byrd, Jeff Thomas<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdelJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julian Edelman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/12\/13\/new-england-patriots-rookie-nkeal-harry-spark\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">N\u2019Keal Harry<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SlatMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Slater<\/a><\/strong> are locks for the final roster, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SanuMo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mohamed Sanu<\/a><\/strong> being the next-closest thing. Everything after that is a little up in the air. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MeyeJa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jakobi Meyers<\/a><\/strong> flashed some impressive tape last year and could stick around if he gains a better grasp of the playbook. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ByrdDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Damiere Byrd<\/a><\/strong> offers a speed element that this offense desperately needs, and undrafted rookie <strong>Jeff Thomas<\/strong> offers a lot of physical upside. It\u2019s going to be hard for him to contribute in a shortened offseason, but he might be too good to let go.<\/p>\n<h4>Tight End (3)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Ryan Izzo, Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/04\/25\/new-england-patriots-tight-ends-devin-asiasi-dalton-keene\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Devin Asiasi<\/strong><\/a> and Dalton Keene aren\u2019t going anywhere, but they\u2019re rookies trying to pick up the hardest non-quarterback position in the offense during a shortened offseason. Expecting both players to contribute right out of the gate is expecting too much, so incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/10\/18\/new-england-patriots-practice-report-josh-gordon-ryan-izzo-rex-burkhead\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ryan Izzo<\/strong><\/a> sticks around in the Patriots roster projection.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LaCoMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt LaCosse<\/a><\/strong>, of course, opted out on Sunday.<\/p>\n<h4>Offensive Line (8)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Isaiah Wynn, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Yodny Cajuste, Hjalte Froholdt, Michael Onwenu, Korey Cunningham<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Arguably the biggest hit to this team came when <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CannMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Cannon<\/a><\/strong> opted out. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WynnIs00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Wynn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThunJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Thuney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndrDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Andrews<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MasoSh01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaq Mason<\/a><\/strong> are locked into their respective roles, but the right tackle position is up in the air. 2019 third-round pick <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/01\/28\/2019-nfl-draft-prospect-yodny-cajuste\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Yodny Cajuste<\/strong><\/a> will have the first shot at the starting job, but he missed his entire rookie season to injury. If he\u2019s not up for the task, then <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CunnKo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Korey Cunningham<\/a><\/strong> is probably the next man up. Don\u2019t be surprised if the Patriots sign a tackle in the coming weeks. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/04\/07\/hjalte-froholdt-2019-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Hjalte Froholdt<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/04\/18\/michael-onwenu-2020-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Michael Onwenu<\/strong><\/a> earn the other depth spots, as both players can play multiple spots along the interior, if needed.<\/p>\n<h4>Defensive Line (8)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Lawrence Guy, Adam Butler, Beau Allen, John Simon, Byron Cowart, Chase Winovich, Deatrich Wise, Derek Rivers, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GuyxLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lawrence Guy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ButlAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Butler<\/a> <\/strong>are locks on the interior, with both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlleBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beau Allen<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CowaBy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Byron Cowart<\/a><\/strong> making the team in this Patriots roster projection. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=SimoJo01,SimoJo00&amp;search=John+Simon&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Simon<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WinoCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chase Winovich<\/a><\/strong> should be the top two edge defenders, at least in the early part of the season. Both players played well in limited snaps and should thrive in an expanded role.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WiseDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deatrich Wise<\/a><\/strong> is a solid rotational lineman, although he\u2019s probably at his best coming off of the bench. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RiveDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Rivers<\/a><\/strong> is the 53<sup>rd<\/sup> man on the roster and wouldn\u2019t even be here if there was a preseason. However, since there isn\u2019t, it\u2019s going to be harder for the annual out-of-nowhere undrafted rookie to usurp him.<\/p>\n<h4>Linebacker (5)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Ja&#8217;Whaun Bentley, Josh Uche, Anfernee Jennings, Brandon Copeland, Cassh Maluia<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/10\/08\/donta-hightower-leads-defense-with-2019-resurgence\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dont\u2019a Hightower<\/strong><\/a> opting out, third-year linebacker <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/05\/13\/jawhaun-bentley-new-england-patriots-x-factors\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ja\u2019Whaun Bentley<\/strong><\/a> becomes the top linebacker on the roster. The former fifth-round pick looked good in small doses over the past two seasons, but only time will tell if he can handle a starting job. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/04\/12\/josh-uche-2020-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Josh Uche<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2020\/03\/19\/anfernee-jennings-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Anfernee Jennings<\/strong><\/a> both possess solid upside, but might not be ready for a Week 1 starting role.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CopeBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Copeland<\/a><\/strong> has the potential to be a free agent steal, as he possesses a lot of the traits that Belichick likes in a linebacker. <strong>Cassh Maluia<\/strong>, the teams sixth-round pick, makes the roster with Hightower sidelined. He\u2019s smaller than your traditional inside linebacker, but knows how to play the run and is a solid early-down player. Basically, he\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobeEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elandon Roberts<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Cornerback (6)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams, Justin Bethel<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No changes here, as the Patriots continue to have one of the deepest cornerback rooms in the league. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GilmSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Gilmore<\/a><\/strong> is still the best in the league, while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackJ.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.C. Jackson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCoJa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason McCourty<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneJo03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Jones<\/a><\/strong> all provide above-average play in their respective roles. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillJo13.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joejuan Williams<\/a><\/strong> played well as a situational cornerback last year and could earn a bigger role in 2020. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BethJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Bethel<\/a><\/strong> is one of the best special teams players in the league and should be a roster lock.<\/p>\n<h4>Safety (5)<\/h4>\n<p><em>In: Devin McCourty, Adrian Phillips, Terrence Brooks, Kyle Dugger, Brandon King<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ChunPa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Chung<\/a><\/strong> out of the equation, New England should be good to go at safety.
