The extension gave the organization $10 million in cap space to use on top free agent <strong>Anthony Harris<\/strong>. While the Vikings benefited from the extension financially, some fans view it as one of the worst decisions of 2020. There are also narratives that Cousins rarely wins against good teams, but it&#8217;s clear that Cousins is not to blame for the Vikings losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Vikings Smart To Sign Kirk Cousins Extension<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 2019 season, Kirk Cousins had the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/stats\/categorystats?seasonType=REG&amp;d-447263-n=1&amp;d-447263-o=2&amp;d-447263-p=1&amp;d-447263-s=PASSING_20PLUS_YARDS_EACH&amp;tabSeq=0&amp;season=2019&amp;experience=&amp;Submit=Go&amp;archive=false&amp;statisticCategory=PASSING&amp;conference=null&amp;qualified=false\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fourth-highest passer rating<\/a> (107.4) with a completion rate of 69.1 percent and an average yards per attempt of 8.1. Cousins also led the NFL in passer rating in play-action last year at 129.2 with 14 touchdowns, 2 picks, and completed 71.8 percent of his throws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/play-index\/play_finder.cgi?request=1&amp;match=summary&amp;year_min=2016&amp;year_max=2019&amp;game_type=R&amp;game_num_min=0&amp;game_num_max=99&amp;week_num_min=0&amp;week_num_max=99&amp;quarter%5B%5D=1&amp;quarter%5B%5D=2&amp;quarter%5B%5D=3&amp;quarter%5B%5D=4&amp;quarter%5B%5D=5&amp;minutes_max=15&amp;seconds_max=0&amp;minutes_min=0&amp;seconds_min=0&amp;down%5B%5D=0&amp;down%5B%5D=1&amp;down%5B%5D=2&amp;down%5B%5D=3&amp;down%5B%5D=4&amp;yards_min=30&amp;yards_max=99&amp;field_pos_min_field=team&amp;field_pos_max_field=team&amp;end_field_pos_min_field=team&amp;end_field_pos_max_field=team&amp;type%5B%5D=PASS&amp;no_play=N&amp;turnover_type%5B%5D=interception&amp;turnover_type%5B%5D=fumble&amp;score_type%5B%5D=touchdown&amp;score_type%5B%5D=field_goal&amp;score_type%5B%5D=safety&amp;rush_direction%5B%5D=LE&amp;rush_direction%5B%5D=LT&amp;rush_direction%5B%5D=LG&amp;rush_direction%5B%5D=M&amp;rush_direction%5B%5D=RG&amp;rush_direction%5B%5D=RT&amp;rush_direction%5B%5D=RE&amp;pass_location%5B%5D=SL&amp;pass_location%5B%5D=SM&amp;pass_location%5B%5D=SR&amp;pass_location%5B%5D=DL&amp;pass_location%5B%5D=DM&amp;pass_location%5B%5D=DR&amp;order_by=yards\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pro Football Reference<\/a> shows that over the last four years, Cousins had 95 completions over 30 yards, which is ahead of <strong>Russell Wilson<\/strong>, <strong>Matt Ryan<\/strong>, <strong>Philip Rivers,<\/strong> and <strong>Tom Brady<\/strong> who were among the top five.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cousins is not only accurate but he\u2019s one of the best <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/stats\/categorystats?seasonType=REG&amp;d-447263-n=1&amp;d-447263-o=2&amp;d-447263-p=1&amp;d-447263-s=PASSING_20PLUS_YARDS_EACH&amp;tabSeq=0&amp;season=2019&amp;experience=&amp;Submit=Go&amp;archive=false&amp;statisticCategory=PASSING&amp;conference=null&amp;qualified=false\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deep passing quarterbacks<\/a> in the NFL, he just doesn\u2019t do it often. His numbers are phenomenal despite bad protection. Imagine how much more efficient he could have been behind an offensive line with the same caliber as the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/colts\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indianapolis Colts<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/titans\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennessee Titans<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/cowboys\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Cowboys<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Vikings Don&#8217;t Win<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The starting front five in the 2019 season included left tackle <strong>Riley Reiff<\/strong>, left guard <strong>Pat Elflein<\/strong>, center <strong>Garrett Bradbury<\/strong>, right guard <strong>Josh Kline<\/strong>, and right tackle <strong>Brian O\u2019Neill<\/strong>. The problem begins from the left side where Elflein and Reiff both struggled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A prime example of bad protection was during Week 13 against the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/seahawks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle Seahawks<\/a>. After the snap, Kirk Cousins pulled back to the 45-yard line but immediately was forced to sling the ball because Seattle\u2019s defensive tackle <strong>Jarran Reed<\/strong> dominantly charged Riley Reiff into Cousins. The Vikings took a 37-30 loss that game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example, was during Week 10 against the Dallas Cowboys. Elflein allowed Cowboys defensive tackle <strong>Antoine Woods<\/strong> to storm right through him and go after <strong>Delvin Cook<\/strong>. Cook was dashing with the ball on 2nd and 6. Although Cook was able to dart away from Woods, it was still one more obstacle for the running back to have to slither out of. Cook eventually was tackled completing the down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The left tackle and left guard is currently the biggest issue on the Vikings offensive line considering it\u2019s Kirk Cousins&#8217; blindside. Elflein was at times exploited for his weaknesses in pass protection. Reiff has also been on a decline allowing six sacks, five quarterback hits, and 21 hurries with nine penalties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too many times last season, Vikings center Garrett Bradbury couldn&#8217;t fend off the man lining over him. It was apparent in Minnesota\u2019s game with the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/broncos\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denver Broncos<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/packers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Bay Packers<\/a> and the divisional round playoff loss to the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/49ers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"nfl-c-body-part nfl-c-body-part--text\">\n<p>The day after the loss to the 49ers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vikings.com\/news\/2019-vikings-position-recap-offensive-line\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bradbury was quoted<\/a> saying, &#8220;We knew going into the game that it was going to be won up front. They outrushed us, protected the quarterback better. I briefly watched the film, and there&#8217;s a lot of things we could have done better. It&#8217;s a tough taste to leave in your mouth at the end of a season because there were some awesome moments, but that&#8217;s the way it is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a common trend among the offensive line to permit pressure on all sides of Kirk Cousins.
