While “can’t miss” prospects like Jeffrey Okudah and CJ Henderson are expected to be selected early in the first round, other talented cornerbacks like Auburn’s Javaris Davis may become a quality draft pick as well.

After coming out of high school ranked as a four-star recruit, Javaris Davis turned down offers from schools like Miami, Louisville, and Georgia to sign with Gus Malzahn’s Auburn Tigers, where he would shine as a key piece in their defensive secondary. In 2019, the 5’8”, 183-pound defensive back finished the season with 43 tackles and two interceptions. He also tallied six passes defended during that time period. Those stats were good enough to earn him a trip to both the Senior Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game, a very impressive accomplishment among college football players. After almost leaving college for the NFL last year, Davis has now decided to make the jump and try his luck in the NFL, just like his cousins Vontae and Vernon Davis did.

Strengths

Possesses capable ball skills;

Impressive closing speed;

Tough-nosed defender; not afraid to stick his head down and make a hard tackle;

Very coachable; improved well over his four years at Auburn, furthering his tackling skills and improving his techniques;

Seems to possess a quality football IQ.

Weaknesses

His ball skills could still use work if he intends to become an elite cornerback at the next level;.

Lacks the frame and size needed to matchup with NFL-level receivers;

Footwork can become sloppy at times;

Can occasionally get lost in coverage;

On occasion, he can get off balance and reach, allowing receivers to make several shifty moves to avoid him

NFL Comparison: Joe Haden

Teams With Need at Position: Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins

Projection: Early 5th – Late 6th

Bottom Line on Javaris Davis

If teams are still looking for quality options at the cornerback position late in the draft, Auburn’s Javaris Davis could be an excellent option. The under-sized cornerback plays with an intensity and heart second-to-none, which is a great trait scouts like to see in cornerback prospects. With impressive closing speed and a high football IQ, Davis can become a quality cornerback for teams looking to increase their squad’s depth at the position. While Davis may never become a starting-level corner in the NFL, he certainly possesses the skill and motor to become a quality backup and solidify himself a roster spot somewhere in the league. If Davis can show improvement in his footwork and coverage abilities, he has the chance to really impress an NFL team. Now, it’s just a matter of finding out who that team may be.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Javaris Davis Overview Position: Cornerback Height: 5’8” Weight: 183 pounds School: Auburn University NFL Combine Performance Data 40 Yard Dash: 4.39 seconds Bench Press: 11 reps Vertical Jump: 35.5″ Broad Jump: 124.0″ Javaris Davis 2020 NFL Draft Profile If your favorite team is in need of help at the cornerback position, the 2020 NFL Draft is the perfect place for them to find […]

[1647
5273
post-85571","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-draft","tag-2020-nfl-draft
["GET
