Garvin had 60 tackles with 17 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks. Jonathan Garvin also had five passes defended and recovered two fumbles. He was all over the place and earned the nickname “Spider” due to his length and agility. His junior year he had fewer tackles, but still managed five sacks and two forced fumbles. He opted to forgo his senior year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. He has the skills to make an impact at the next level, however, he might have benefited from another year in college.

Jonathan Garvin attended high school in Lake Worth, FL. He played for Lake Worth High School and was heavily recruited. Garvin received offers from 20 plus schools. Some of the major schools that offered him were Oklahoma, Tennessee, Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, and Louisville among others. It came down to a decision between Miami and Clemson, but in the end, he opted for Miami. He was rated as a four-star recruit and a top ten rated pass rusher in the nation.

Strengths

has good length and is pretty fluid;

has good burst and does a good job getting outside of tackles;

he has outstanding closing speed and impacts runners in a big way;

does not have any major flaws in his game;

a very good athlete with plenty of upsides to develop.

Weaknesses

is not as strong as he needs to be and will struggle against big tackles;

still needs experience – has only two years as a starter under his belt;

takes too many plays off;

needs to make reads faster and not rely on his speed solely;

needs to improve against the run to play at the next level.

NFL Comparison: Andre Branch

Teams With Need at Position: Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins

Projection: fourth to seventh round

Bottom Line

Jonathan Garvin is a talented edge rusher but is seen as inconsistent and at times shows a lack of commitment. He opted to pass on his senior season of eligibility and enter the draft. He has day two upside, and if he finds a coach that can improve his motor he could be a big-time contributor. Unfortunately, despite being a second or third round talent, he will likely fall to day three. Whoever ends up drafting him could wind up with an absolute gem. He has steal upside to his game.

Embed from Getty Images

Jonathan Garvin was a major contributor for the Miami defense in 2019, contributing 60 tackles with 17 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks.

[1647
5273
post-85009","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-draft","tag-2020-nfl-draft
["GET
