Over the next few weeks, we will find out if they are in a complete rebuild or if they will field a competitive team in 2020. History shows that a competitive team is built around a “franchise quarterback”. Unfortunately, the Jaguars have been an organization riddled with finding a true franchise quarterback. The search has spanned a couple of decades.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Cam Newton

Minshew Mania

Sure quarterback Gardner Minshew II is a local hero in Jacksonville. And for good reason after his surprising rookie year in 2019 in which he went 6-6 as a starter. As an undersized sixth-round selection, Minshew opened eyes. There’s no denying that he is a fan favorite. He brought flair, charisma, and charm to a city looking for a star at the position. But is that enough?

What if he’s not the answer for the Jacksonville Jaguars? What if his magic was truly an illusion? Now what? The best other option was run out of town and recently traded to the Chicago Bears. Now they appear to be riding with Minshew in 2020 at least. However, the former first overall pick is looking for a home. Therefore, the Jaguars should consider bringing in Newton.

Physical Attributes

When a fan encounters Newton for the first time they are in awe of his size (6’ 5” 245 lbs.). He is certainly one of the most physically gifted athletes in all of professional sports. His physical attributes set him apart from other quarterbacks in the league. Throughout his years, he displayed toughness and until recently, durability. Additionally, his arm strength is unquestioned and his mobility made him a three-time Pro Bowler and an NFL MVP for the Carolina Panthers.

Now his physical presence and talents are available for any franchise to acquire. The Jaguars should be at the top of the list based on their offensive philosophy. In other words, this franchise could certainly use his bruising style of play alongside running back Leonard Fournette. This would open up the passing game for Jacksonville’s young receivers led by DJ Chark and perhaps a high-pick in this year’s NFL Draft in April.

Experience

One thing a coach is unable to coach is experience. Newton is entering his tenth season and has seen it all. From rowdy fans at opposing NFC South stadiums to the big stage of the Super Bowl. Defensive coordinators have thrown all types of packages his way as an attempt to slow him down. Additionally, his ability to command the huddle and provide confidence within that huddle might go unnoticed at times. A little swagger in the huddle can be a good thing. Right?

On the field, Newton can take a team on his back and lead them to victory. With his arm or his legs, Newton is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands. Over the years his maturation in the film room has translated to wins between the sidelines. The bottom line is that when he is on the field there is a chance to win. Newton would easily be the second-best quarterback in the AFC South. Additionally, he would be the third or fourth-best in the AFC.

The Chip on His Shoulder

Newton enters this season with something to prove to the nay-sayers around the league. He is out to prove that he is healthy and capable of a return to the top. He is hungry and looking to make a statement. Not one person likes to hear that they are not good enough anymore in their chosen profession. Not one. Although football is a game and entertainment to some, it is a job for superior athletes. And we all know these athletes do not like to be disrespected.

In the past, Newton has come across as arrogant and abrasive at times. However, the past year might have instilled some humility. Now is his chance to reflect and also find motivation for his future.

Last Word on Cam Newton

Honestly, based on history, the front office will not make this happen. Too conservative and they don’t want to muddy the waters. But if they are looking to win in 2020, an invitation should be sent. Imagine an experienced, former MVP with a chip on his shoulder in the Jaguars huddle. After all, a new cat in town on the prowl looking for his next meal is not a bad thing.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been an organization riddled with finding a true franchise quarterback.
