Murchison played a big role with North Carolina last year, recording 21 run stops, six sacks, five quarterback hits, and 18 hurries. He did all this despite moving all along the defensive front.

Murchison initially entered the college football ranks as a three-star recruit. Despite the relatively high ranking, the North Carolina native didn’t receive any considerable interest from the major programs. Due to the lack of attention, Murchison spent the first two years of his collegiate career in junior college. After two seasons there, Murchison joined North Carolina prior to the 2018 season. In that first season, Murchison recorded 11 run stops, six sacks, three hits, and 12 hurries on 540 snaps.

Strengths

Stout run defender despite sub-300 pound build;

Can line up inside and outside;

Has the lower-body strength to stand strong against double teams;

Played multiple techniques and managed to find some form of success with all of them;

Long wingspan with ability to create separation against his blockers.

Weaknesses

Average to below-average pass rusher;

Pedestrian athleticism with minimal upside;

Will probably need to add weight to survive in the NFL;

Poor tackler that struggles to bring down the ball carrier;

Doesn’t have the speed to chase down ball carrier when play is away from him;

Takes plays off and could improve his effort, especially on passing downs.

NFL Comparison: Kyle Love

Teams With Need at Position: Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins

Projection: Round 5

Bottom Line on Larrell Murchison

Larrell Murchison is the definition of a solid role player. The North Carolina State product would have had more value in a different era, but still belongs on a roster in a depth role. Murchison is one of the better pure run defenders in his class, capable of holding up against double teams, eating up space, and generally doing his job in the trenches. He has the positional versatility to play multiple techniques and move all around the formation.

Unfortunately for Murchison, making plays in the passing game is the most important thing in today’s NFL. Murchison is nothing special as a pass rusher, lacking any elite moves and the athleticism to just blow by subpar blockers. Additionally, while he’s good at eating space in the run game, he’s not that great at actually finishing plays. According to Pro Football Focus, Murchison missed 16 of his 79 career tackle attempts, which is obviously a bad thing. On top of that, he doesn’t have the athleticism to chase down plays and sometimes takes plays off. Ultimately, he’s nothing special, but he’s a good depth player to have.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

After two seasons with North Carolina, Larrell Murchison hopes to take his game to the professional level in the 2020 NFL Draft.

[1647
5273
post-84067","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nfl-draft","tag-2020-nfl-draft
["GET
