On December 2, 2019, Wolfe was placed on injured reserve after suffering a dislocated elbow in Week 13. Two years prior to that on December 5, 2017, he was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury.

In 2016, Wolfe signed a four-year extension with the Broncos worth $36.7 million. On February 7, he was part of the Broncos team that won Super Bowl 50, defeating the Carolina Panthers 24-10. In that game, Wolfe had five tackles and 0.5 sacks. He posted a career high later that year in tackles with 51, and in passes defended with four. Despite his personal success that year, the Broncos finished the 2016-17 season with a 9-7 record. They missed the playoffs for the first time in Wolfe’s career.

The 2015 season was the best of Wolfe’s career. He served a four-game suspension for PED violation but returned to cement his place as one of the best run stuffers in the league. He eventually was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week, after the Broncos defense completely nullified the undefeated Green Bay Packers offense in Week 8.

Wolfe’s sophomore season was a tough one. He suffered a spinal cord injury in a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Along with two bouts of food poisoning, that led to Wolfe losing 20 pounds. He wasn’t productive on the field. Wolfe suffered a seizure that was related to the injury and the Broncos reached Super Bowl XLVIII without him, losing to the Seahawks.

The Broncos selected Wolfe in the second round (36th) of the 2012 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $5.20 million contract. He finished his rookie season with 40 tackles, six sacks and two passes defensed. His six sacks were third-most in franchise history.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Derek Wolfe is officially off the open market.
