Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt certainly is. The man is already poring through film with new head coach Kevin Stefanski and they’re ready to take the offense to the next level.

The Cleveland Browns System – It’s Time to Get Excited

The Browns have all the benefits of experienced coaches who will stop at nothing to bring out the best in the talent available. And that’s a lot of talent. Talent that was supposed to drive the Browns to the playoffs in 2019.

Van Pelt Has The Experience

He spent 10 years as an NFL player himself. He now has 15 years of experience coaching quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers. Analysts believe he has the diverse skill set that Stefanski was chasing. Someone who could take all the ideas from every member of the offensive staff and mold them into “the Browns system.”

Getting The System In Place

Van Pelt had plenty to say to Andrew Gribble of clevelandbrowns.com . It’s an exciting prospect to Van Pelt, having the opportunity to build the offense from the ground up. “The most important thing now is to get this system in place and make it as easy and friendly for the players so we can get off the ground and start rolling.”

His Playing Background Could Make A Difference

Van Pelt’s played at the University of Pittsburgh an became the fifth player to throw for 2000 yards in four consecutive seasons. He was an eighth round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1993 NFL Draft. As a backup for Jim Kelly and others, he played in 31 games and made 11 starts. Stefanski believes that as a backup quarterback, a lot more goes into preparation that one would imagine, and that will help Van Pelt as a coach. “A lot of those guys become great coaches because they understand what it takes to prepare for an NFL game from that position when you’re not getting any reps oftentimes. I just think that’s made him a better coach.”

Van Pelt Has Had Success Before

Van Pelt was offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills in 2009 before spending two years as quarterbacks coach in Tampa Bay. Mike McCarthy gave him the opportunity to branch out as a running backs coach in Green Bay for two seasons. He even coached receivers for a year. It “broadened his perspective of offensive football.” He then shifted back to quarterbacks coach in from 2014-17, where he guided Aaron Rodgers to his peak. That was the period in which Rodgers was named NFL MVP (2014). He had totalled 4,381 passing yards, 38 touchdowns and only five interceptions. Van Pelt feels working side by side with the elite Rodgers helped him as a coach.

It’s Time For A Decent Run Game

Van Pelt saw what Baker Mayfield can do. He’s eager to work with him, especially joined by Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and Nick Chubb. They all produced 1,000 yards in their positions in one season – the first time in Browns history. Van Pelt knows their skillsets will intertwine with what the franchise wants him to do with the offense. He knows a good run game and play-action off it can make all the difference.

Together with his staff, Van Pelt can truly revitalize the Browns offensive attack. It’s all about that “Browns system” he and Stefanski repeatedly mention. When they get that right, everything will click into place.

Main photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Cleveland Browns system; It’s time to get excited about the Cleveland Browns system.
