{"id":8054,"date":"2016-12-12T14:06:06","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T19:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/?p=8054"},"modified":"2021-03-13T11:20:06","modified_gmt":"2021-03-13T16:20:06","slug":"cardell-hayes-found-guilty-manslaughter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2016\/12\/12\/cardell-hayes-found-guilty-manslaughter\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardell Hayes Found Guilty of Manslaughter in Will Smith Shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Late Sunday night, a 12-person jury in <strong>New Orleans<\/strong>, <strong>LA<\/strong> found <strong>Cardell Hayes<\/strong> guilty of two counts of manslaughter in connection to the shooting death of former <strong>New Orleans Saints<\/strong> defensive end <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitWi99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Smith<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cardell Hayes Found Guilty of Manslaughter in Will Smith Shooting<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/2016\/12\/11\/cardell-hayes-guilty-manslaughter-will-smith-trial-verdict\/95318516\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to <strong>Danny Monteverde<\/strong> of <strong>WWL-TV<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Hayes will be sentenced on Feb. 17 for the two counts he was found guilty on. He faces up to 40 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Both guilty verdicts, of manslaughter for Smith&#8217;s murder and attempted manslaughter for shooting Smith&#8217;s widow Racquel, were 10-2 votes by the jury. The jury found him unanimously not guilty on a third charge, which was criminal damage to property.<\/p>\n<p>No word has been released yet if the defense plans to move for a new trial or appeal the decision, but the attorney for Hayes, <strong>John Fuller<\/strong>, said &#8220;I respect the jury&#8217;s verdict, and I respect the pain both families are feeling tonight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two of Smith&#8217;s former teammates with the Saints, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McAlDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deuce McAllister<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomPi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre Thomas<\/a><\/strong>, were present along with Saints head coach <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PaytSe20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Payton<\/a><\/strong> when the verdict was read. No comment from the Saints has yet been released, but McAllister said that, &#8220;it&#8217;s not a win for anybody. It was a tough situation. There was no way either side could win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A similar case, involving the shooting murder of former NFL player <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McKnJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe McKnight<\/a><\/strong>, will begin soon in the New Orleans area as well. It will be interesting to see how this case might have an effect on the McKnight case.
