{"id":79546,"date":"2020-01-16T12:42:03","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T17:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/?p=79546"},"modified":"2020-01-16T12:42:03","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T17:42:03","slug":"green-bay-packers-the-growing-legacy-of-the-smith-brothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2020\/01\/16\/green-bay-packers-the-growing-legacy-of-the-smith-brothers\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Bay Packers: The Growing Legacy of the Smith Brothers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the cold, frosty scene at Lambeau Field began to take shape after the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/packers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Bay Packers<\/a> defeated the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/seahawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle Seahawks<\/a>, 28-23, in the Divisional Round, you sense an energy that had been missing for a few seasons now.<\/p>\n<p>Green Bay finds themselves one game away from Super Bowl LIV when they&#8217;ll meet the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 19. But before we reach that game, there have been two players that have singlehandedly changed the focus.<\/p>\n<h2>Enter the Super Smith Bros. in Green Bay<\/h2>\n<p>Enter<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitZa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Za&#8217;Darius Smith<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitPr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Preston Smith<\/a><\/strong>, or as they&#8217;re now known in these parts: The Super Smith Bros.<\/p>\n<p>Green Bay has been no stranger to the likes of premium defenders when players such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WoodCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Woodson<\/a><\/strong>, or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WhitRe00,WhitRe21,WhitRe20&amp;search=Reggie+White&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reggie White<\/a><\/strong> come to mind.<\/p>\n<p>But the infectious likeability of Za&#8217;Darius or the hard-pressed Preston had been missing in Green Bay&#8217;s locker room for some time now.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, the face of the franchise is still <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RodgAa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Rodgers<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for Green Bay, but sharing some of that star power with two defenders doesn&#8217;t come around too often in the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>General manager<strong> Brian Gutekunst<\/strong> had one of the more successful off-season accusations <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/03\/12\/adrian-amos-signs-with-green-bay-packers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that saw him bringing<\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AmosAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adrian Amos<\/a><\/strong> from the Chicago Bears, drafting an All-Rookie Team player in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SavaDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darnell Savage<\/a> Jr.<\/strong>, and, the greatest cherry on top, signing the Smiths from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/ravens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baltimore Ravens<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/redskins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Redskins,<\/a> respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>The Smiths&#8217; Bond<\/h3>\n<p>But the fact that the Smiths arrived in Green Bay and became fan favorites overnight was no mere coincidence. They have arguably been the best players on this team and both have shown up in crucial times when the team needed them most.<\/p>\n<p>Both have expressed interest in having a long-term career with Green Bay, and head coach <strong>Matt LaFleur<\/strong> and defensive coordinator<strong> Mike Pettine<\/strong> couldn&#8217;t have asked for better players.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Their legacy can grow even brighter with a win in the NFC Championship game &#8212; and then by winning the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Green Bay has had a lot of firsts to experience in 2019 season &#8212; which featured a lot of unknowns, as well.<\/p>\n<p>How would a new head coach perform? How would Rodgers perform with unproven tests? And how would this defense gel together with a lot of new building blocks?<\/p>\n<p>All of that kinetic energy, the bonding, pushing each other to their limits, have all been because of the Super Smith Bros.
