The undrafted rookie out of Samford remains undefeated in each of his three starts this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The change at the quarterback position is not the only shift in this Pittsburgh offensive scheme. Injuries and suspensions have scattered this offense, introducing a lot of young talent. Say what you will about head coach<strong> Mike Tomlin<\/strong>, they know how to make the best of what they\u2019ve got. Despite distraction after distraction they are still alive in the AFC North playoff picture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most impressive? Their record is consistent with their 2018 performance. Their current record without last year\u2019s superstars: <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoetBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Roethlisberger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=BrowAn04,BrowAn01&amp;search=Antonio+Brown&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ConnJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Conner<\/a>,<\/b> and <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Juju Smith-Schuste<\/strong>r<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This season has come down to how Tomlin is able to cultivate a culture in his locker room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Consistency and Chemistry Essential to Pittsburgh Steelers Playoff Hopes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team Chemistry<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hodges is the down-home country boy turned fan favorite of the Steelers locker room. First famed for his master duck calls, he\u2019s now become a symbol of progress for Pittsburgh. The fans and the internet alike can\u2019t get enough of this underdog story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach Tomlin made the decision to put Hodges in over season mainstay <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RudoMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mason Rudolph<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to provide the much-needed spark for a mostly dormant offense. Whether it was through his off-day hunting trips with breakout receiver <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WashJa00,WashJa20&amp;search=James+Washington&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Washington<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or practice-day carpools with<\/span>\u00a0Smith-Schuster<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hodges has proven that he brings the energy and chemistry this team\u2019s been missing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond looking to Duck as a leader for this offense, he\u2019s managed to gain the trust of the defense as well. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DuprAl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bud Dupree<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> told reporters\u00a0 Duck\u2019s risky gameplay came as no surprise to the team. The linebacker said Duck\u2019s kept the same energy from the scout team and brought it to the primetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2018I\u2019m finna shred y\u2019all up on scout team, I\u2019m finna shred y\u2019all watch this, Bud.\u2019\u201d Dupree recalled Hodges\u2019 trash talk. \u201cEvery time he completes a pass he looks me in the eye. So we already knew how Duck was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems like this chemistry was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Steelers locker room. They are still scraping by this season at 8-5. Without Big Ben, they stand at 8-3. They are 7-1 since Week 6 of the regular season. Under starting quarterback Duck Hodges, they inch closer and closer to the postseason at 3-0.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistent Game Play<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to his first start over a healthy Rudolph, Hodges told reporters that he knows nobody expects anything from him. The key to this newfound offensive success comes from trusting the offense around him to be the most efficient offense on the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The undrafted rookie found himself up against this year\u2019s number one draft pick in quarterback <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/02\/04\/kyler-murray-2019-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyler Murray<\/a>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hodges remained the cool, calm, collected quarterback he\u2019s always been and entered into the Arizona arena.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve never really thought about beating the number one quarterback taken this year or last year,\u201d said Hodges. \u201cI just want to go out and beat the opposing quarterback because he\u2019s the opposing quarterback.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh secured 20 first downs in 57 plays. Hodges was 16 for 19 for a total of 135 passing yards. Comparatively,<\/span>\u00a0Murray<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> completed 20 of 30 for 165 passing yards. Hodges is not playing to win MVP. He\u2019s locking in on a powerful run game with weapons like <\/span><b><\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SnelBe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benny Snell<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to boost the offense as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offensive Weapons<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JohnDi01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diontae Johnson<\/a>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a huge difference maker in this week&#8217;s offensive match up. Beyond efficiency, the rookie brought some much needed firepower delivering two fatal blows to the Cardinals defense. The rookie was this week\u2019s offensive workhorse. He had 60 yards for 6 receptions on the night and an explosive 85-yard punt return for a score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the absence of Pro Bowl talent on the offense as Conner and Smith-Schuster have been recovering from injuries, Pittsburgh has truly weaponized what most analysts would call a ragtag team of young talent. Their consistency under so much change is impressive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snell and in-season acquisition <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WhytKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kerrith Whyte<\/a><\/strong> finished the game with 41 rushing yards each. Another young gun, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SamuJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylen Samuels<\/a>,<\/strong> put up 16 rushing yards and 18 yards off receptions. When asked about the performance from this breakout offensive core Tomlin told reporters it\u2019s important that different areas are stepping up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA week ago, we were standing here talking about James Washington rising up and making the necessary plays for us &#8230;\u201d said Tomlin. \u201cThe last game, Diontae did similar things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t Count Out the Defense<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s definitely room for doubt with the rookie\u2019s consistency after back to back sub-200 yard performances but this offense continues to improve week to week. The Steelers have found their formula to securing regular-season wins against inferior opponents. A short-pass offense and perfectly timed interceptions by veteran cornerback <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HadeJo99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Haden<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s performance brings Haden to four interceptions on the season. Haden has already surpassed his 2017-2018 season totals combined. He was hesitant to take all the credit though. According to Haden, he\u2019s not the only defensive player putting in the extra work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing things, communicating, telling guys what I\u2019m about to do and them having my back,\u201d Haden told the press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When in doubt, the Steelers defense shows out. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/11\/12\/minkah-magic-pittsburgh-steelers-are-back-to-blitz-burgh-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This defense has been the saving grace for the franchise several times this season.<\/a> With a d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.footballoutsiders.com\/stats\/teamdef\/2019\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">efense efficiency rating of -17.4%<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they are the third best defense in the league. To put that into context, their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.footballoutsiders.com\/stats\/teamoff\/2019\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offensive efficiency rating is currently the third-worst in the league at -18.3%.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For overall team efficiency, the Steelers are 14th in the league (1.8%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh is still in the hunt for an AFC wild-card spot as they take on the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/bills\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Bills<\/a> out of the AFC East on Sunday Night Football.
