In that time, he’s caught 13 passes for 170 yards and registered one touchdown reception. His 68.4 percent catch rate is second on the team among players with at least 10 receptions behind Mark Walton. And he’s suddenly become an increasingly important of the receiving corps after rookie Preston Williams suffered a season-ending torn ACL in last week’s win over the Indianapolis Colts.

A Miami native, Hurns initially signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins on July 26. He spent the 2018 season with the Dallas Cowboys, totaling 20 catches for 295 yards and two touchdowns. He also made a single catch in the Cowboys’ 24-22 win over the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. But he also suffered a horrific leg injury in that game which ended his ability to contribute in the divisional round.

Prior to that, Hurns spent the first four seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Undrafted out of Miami, he burst onto the scene as a rookie when he totaled 110 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his first-ever game as a pro back in 2014. He would go on to catch 16 touchdown passes over the course of his first two seasons with the Jags. His contributions tapered off after that, though, as he managed just five during the remainder of his time in Jacksonville before he moved to Dallas.

During his collegiate career with the Hurricanes, Hurns finished with 1,891 receiving yards and 14 touchdown grabs. Both of those stats are good enough for top-10 in school history.

Hurns’ first chance to make the most of his new deal comes on Sunday when the Dolphins host the Buffalo Bills.
