It began with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/colts\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indianapolis Colts <\/a>superstar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LuckAn00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Andrew Luck&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> shocking retirement prior to the season. Then, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/jaguars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> signal caller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FoleNi00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nick Foles<\/strong><\/a> went on Injury Reserve with a shoulder injury. Week two was brutal as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/saints\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Orleans Saints<\/a> lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BreeDr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Drew Brees<\/strong><\/a> for over a month, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/steelers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoetBe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ben Roethlisberger<\/strong><\/a> is to miss the remainder of the season with an elbow injury. All of these teams have their team in the hands of their backup quarterback, except for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Jets<\/a> as they turn to third-string quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FalkLu00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Luke Falk<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Luke Falk Is Next Man Up for New York Jets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><b>How Did the Jets Get Here?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the off-season, the Jets signed former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/broncos\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denver Broncos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/vikings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Vikings<\/a> quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SiemTr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trevor Siemian<\/strong><\/a> to a one-year deal to back up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DarnSa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sam Darnold<\/strong><\/a>. Around them, the team added halfback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BellLe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Le\u2019Veon Bell<\/strong><\/a>, receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrowJa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jamison Crowder<\/strong><\/a>, amongst others in a revamped offense. Entering the season, it was a team that if everything went right, there was playoff potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, it was a big if. The season opener against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Bills<\/a> was brutal as the Bills scored 17 unanswered to win 17-16. Little did fans know that was the beginning of the worst start imaginable. The injury report quickly saw 2019 third overall pick defensive lineman<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillQu00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <strong>Quinnen Williams<\/strong><\/a> and linebacker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MoslC.00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CJ Mosley <\/strong><\/a>added to it. It was also announced that receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EnunQu00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Quincy Enunwa<\/strong><\/a> was to miss the remainder of the season with another serious neck injury.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can\u2019t get any worse right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the heartbreaking report came in. That illness that Darnold missed practice with was diagnosed as mononucleosis, which causes an enlarged spleen that if hit, could be fatal. That being said, this past Monday night the Jets turned to backup Trevor Siemian for the foreseeable future with the unknown timeline for Darnold\u2019s recovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/browns\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> marched in and stopped Siemian\u2019s offense from moving the ball. Nothing was happening, and then Siemian went down. One of those injuries that the moment it happens, fans get the feeling that\u2019s it for that player.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that is where Luke Falk comes in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Who is Luke Falk?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the class of 2013, the three-star recruit went to <strong>Mike Leach<\/strong>\u2019s air raid offense of Washington State. Falk has never had the strongest of arms or been the most mobile threat, but he has always played a smart and accurate game. He started five games as a freshman, quickly earning his way into the starting job for the next three years. Falk threw for 14,481 yards and 119 touchdowns to only 39 interceptions in his career as a Cougar. With a winning record, his football IQ, and consistent production, he gained interest from the NFL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was selected in the sixth round with the 199th overall pick by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/titans\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennessee Titans<\/a>. NFL.com analyst <strong>Lance Zierlen<\/strong>\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/luke-falk?id=32194641-4c45-2491-a0a5-d806460a5d8d\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Falk spoke of how Falk is a \u201ctall, rhythm passer with good natural accuracy and years of quality production who is much more comfortable working the perimeter and against man coverage\u2026 There are some holes that could be hard to correct in Falk\u2019s game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falk did not last long with Tennessee, as he was let go with cut-downs to 53, then picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/coaches\/GaseAd0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Adam Gase<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/dolphins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Dolphins<\/a> before landing on IR.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entering 2019 with the Jets, he was fourth on the depth chart behind Darnold, Siemian, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WebbDa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Davis Webb<\/strong><\/a>. Quickly, Falk\u2019s smart play overtook Webb for the third-string job, but both were cut as the team brought its roster to 53. Unlike Webb, Falk was brought back as the theoretical third quarterback, if needed, as a member of the practice squad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just like that, he was in line for Siemian\u2019s backup for Monday and now he&#8217;s the starter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What to Expect from Luke Falk<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Siemian went down, the Jets quickly had Falk take over. At first, it was all about Bell and the run game, but then Falk settled in. He finished the game with a promising 20\/25 for 198 yards. The former Dolphin even drove the ball into Browns territory multiple times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Falk at quarterback and his familiarity to Gase\u2019s offense, expect the offense to run at full speed. Falk is an intelligent player with a high football IQ and has plenty of experience as a leader. This team will rally around him this week as the line against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/patriots\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Patriots<\/a> this week is in favor of the Pats\u00a0at -22.5. Bell and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MontTy01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ty Montgomery<\/strong><\/a> will be getting tons of touches, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndeRo04.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Robby Anderson<\/strong><\/a> and Crowder in the air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this being Gang Green\u2019s third starting quarterback in as many weeks, this has not been the start that anyone expected. And it could very well be a difficult game on Sunday in Foxborough. However, the Jets have the bye next week, with the potential of Darnold returning against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/eagles\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> in Week five getting higher.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>At The End of the Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falk does not need to win on Sunday for his start to be a success. He needs to simply come in, run the offense, and play his game. If he does that, win or lose, everyone will finally settle in. Entering the bye, the team will start getting healthy, the franchise quarterback is not lost for the season, and the offense has the potential to produce. The Jets will be a hungry team for the final 13 games of 2019.
