Between <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=BrowAn04,BrowAn01&amp;search=Antonio+Brown&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Brown<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s helmet and feet, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/story\/0ap3000001041162\/article\/jayzs-roc-nation-entering-partnership-with-nfl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jay Z partnering with the NFL<\/a>, and now <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LuckAn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Luck<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s surprise retirement, the dog days of summer have been quite lively.<\/p>\n<h2>Studs and Duds from Chicago Bears Preseason<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/coaches\/NagyMa0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Nagy<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s decision to take his 2018 preseason approach of resting his starters to the next level <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/08\/20\/chicago-bears-sitting-starters-a-mistake\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raised some eyebrows<\/a>. Seeing the likes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=NewtCa00,NewtCa20&amp;search=Cam+Newton&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Newton<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MillLa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lamar Miller<\/a><\/strong> become the latest to go down with injury, Miller for the season, lowered those eyebrows.<\/p>\n<p>The extended look at the backups on the roster was invaluable. Starters are set for this team, save for maybe running back, and even that may just be a formality. So seeing some of the lesser-known players flash was good. Seeing a few of those players possibly earn roster spots was a treat.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, some players may have played themselves right off the team. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FryxEl00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Elliott Fry<\/strong><\/a> has already been cut and injuries along the offensive line forced another move. Others will surely follow, be it due to performance or just trying to sneak someone on to the practice squad.<\/p>\n<h3>Studs<\/h3>\n<h4>James Vaughters &#8211; Linebacker<\/h4>\n<p>The Bears are in need of a fourth pass-rusher behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MackKh00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Khalil Mack<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FloyLe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Leonard Floyd<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LyncAa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Aaron Lynch<\/strong><\/a>. Through three weeks, first-year pro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VaugJa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>James Vaughters<\/strong><\/a> is tied for the NFL-lead in forced fumbles in the preseason with two, both coming via strip-sack. He only has five total tackles so maybe his game is not as well-rounded as one might like. But he gets to the quarterback, that\u2019s more than Fitts can boast.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">8. James Vaughters has used the past two weeks to play himself into a roster spot with two strip-sacks. He can disappear sometimes but the guy always seems to pop up and create some havoc every so often. That type of guy can be a decent #4 edge rusher.  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bears?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Bears<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ANBlz1GioQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/ANBlz1GioQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Erik Lambert (@ErikLambert1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ErikLambert1\/status\/1165640746030063616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 25, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>Josh Woods &#8211; Linebacker<\/h4>\n<p>When trying to guess who the Bears leading tackler was this preseason <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KwiaNi00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nick Kwiatkoski<\/strong><\/a>, appropriately, comes to mind. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/josh-woods-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Josh Woods<\/strong><\/a>, a converted defensive back and an undrafted free agent in 2018, sits atop the team stat sheet with 19 total tackles. He is tied for fourth in the NFL in total tackles and is second in solo tackles this preseason. Woods looks like a quality backup at a position that was thought to be thin.<\/p>\n<h4>Deon Bush &#8211; Safety<\/h4>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BushDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deon Bush<\/a><\/strong> has given the impression that he is finally putting it all together in his contract year. He is another player who has received kudos here this preseason. His efforts have him in a four-way tie for the NFL-lead with two interceptions, one of which he returned 91-yards for a touchdown. Players breaking out with new deals on the line isn\u2019t new, but it could be a boon for the Bears if they can now go three-deep with quality safety play.<\/p>\n<h4>Clifton Duck &#8211; Cornerback<\/h4>\n<p>Apparently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/clifton-duck-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Clifton Duck<\/strong><\/a> has an affinity for playing above his 5&#8217;9&#8243;, 176-pound frame. The undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State was the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SunBelt\/status\/1020322691037851648\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year<\/a> in 2018. He is having a stellar summer with the Bears, notching nine stops and a pick he returned 62 yards. Duck also went all out to block for Bush on his interception return that ended in a touchdown. The difference is it wasn\u2019t for a glowing review, Bullard seems to be on his last legs with the Bears. Bullard has regressed this preseason, notching a sole tackle even though he has started two of the Bears three contests this preseason. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobeRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roy Robertson-Harris<\/a><\/strong> looks poised for a breakout and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndeAb00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Abdullah Anderson<\/strong><\/a> flashes. 2019 might be Bullard\u2019s last in Chicago.<\/p>\n<h4>Isaiah Irving &#8211; Linebacker<\/h4>\n<p>Let this also serve as the argument against <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FittKy00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kylie Fitts<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/I\/IrviIs00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Irving<\/a><\/strong> has registered one sack and five total tackles in three preseason starts. Going into his third year, it is now or never for Irving (and Fitts). Players are already fighting to be the fourth edge rusher in the rotation and, right now, Vaughters seems ahead of both Irving and Fitts.<\/p>\n<h4>DeAndre Houston-Carson &#8211; Safety<\/h4>\n<p>When Bush and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HousDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeAndre Houston-Carson<\/a><\/strong> came into the league there was some question as to where they could play, cornerback or safety. Both settled at safety, though Bush has acquitted himself much better. Houston-Carson has seven total tackles this preseason, three fewer than he has in his career. He can disappear and isn\u2019t the best in coverage.<\/p>\n<h3>Practice Squad<\/h3>\n<h4>Ryan Nall &#8211; Running Back<\/h4>\n<p>The Bears leading rusher this preseason? Nope, it\u2019s not rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2019\/03\/12\/david-montgomery-2019-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David Montgomery<\/strong><\/a> or free-agent signee <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=DaviMi01,DaviMi20,DaviMi21&amp;search=Mike+Davis&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Davis<\/a><\/strong> or even electric-rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kerrith-whyte-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kerrith Whyte<\/strong><\/a>. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NallRy00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ryan Nall<\/strong><\/a>, who is sixth in the NFL in rushing this preseason. The first-year back also leads the team in receptions with nine that he turned into 53 yards. He is expected to be healthy for the opener and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShahAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Shaheen<\/a><\/strong> has (oddly) been a no-show this preseason. In their stead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/ian-bunting-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ian Bunting<\/strong><\/a> has caught five of eight targets for a team-leading 108 yards. The local product has had some gaffes with blocking assignments but his hands and run-after-catch ability are obvious.<\/p>\n<h3>Bears Preseason Studs &amp; Duds<\/h3>\n<p>Another preseason game will be played Thursday against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/titans\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennessee Titans<\/a>, and roster cuts will be made soon after. Any of the players mentioned here could be gone by the time the regular season rolls around.
