On August 19,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/sports\/a28746107\/jay-z-nfl-roc-nation-deal-colin-kaepernick-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay-Z and the NFL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced a new partnership to collaborate on entertainment and social justice projects.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocnation.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roc Nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>Shawn Carter<\/strong>&#8216;s entertainment company, becomes the official NFL &#8220;live music entertainment strategist.&#8221; On paper, the deal looks great. Carter is a cultural icon, the biggest rapper in the game, and a social activist. The NFL, on the other hand, generates more than<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sports\/ct-spt-nfl-revenue-super-bowl-20190128-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$15 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> annually. More than 100 million viewers watch the Super Bowl halftime show. Jay-Z brings his street cred and relationships with some of the biggest performers in popular music. The NFL can leverage Jay&#8217;s notoriety to break down the barriers between communities of color and the league. So why exactly is Jay-Z battling backlash for his deal with the NFL? Why has this partnership elicited so much anger from fans?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A Look at the Backlash Facing Jay-Z Due to His Deal With the NFL<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s The Deal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NFL deal with Jay-Z effectively makes Roc Nation the executive producer of the Super Bowl halftime show. Jay-Z and Roc Nation will also play a large role in the NFL&#8217;s Inspire Change initiative. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/2019\/8\/16\/20808892\/jay-z-nfl-kaepernick-roc-nation-partnership-criticism\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The program<\/a> is designed to bring players together working towards advancing education and economic opportunities, improving police and community relations, and working towards criminal justice reform. Both parties say the deal is an important step forward and reflective of the NFL\u2019s commitment to helping marginalized communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Backlash Context<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For two years, the NFL has tried to distance itself from former <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/49ers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quarterback<\/span> <b><\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KaepCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colin Kaepernick<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2016, Kaepernick<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/8\/15\/17619122\/kaepernick-trump-nfl-protests-2018\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sparked a league-wide protest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by kneeling during the national anthem to call attention to racial injustice and police brutality. Since becoming a free agent, Kap remains unsigned by any NFL franchise. Kaepernick believes he&#8217;s been blackballed and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/identities\/2018\/9\/6\/17820158\/colin-kaepernick-eric-reid-collusion-grievance-protest-settlement\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed a formal grievance against the league<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in October 2017. The former 49ers quarterback and <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/panthers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Panthers<\/a> safety<\/span> <b><\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/ReidEr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Reid<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reportedly settled that grievance<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nfl-paid-under-10-million-to-settle-colin-kaepernick-grievance-11553192288\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for less than $10 million<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this past February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2018, the NFL announced it would<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/identities\/2018\/5\/23\/17385988\/nfl-national-anthem-protests-policy-kneeling\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implement a policy <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">barring players from kneeling on the field during the anthem. The league has walked back parts of its anti-kneeling rule. But several NFL owners are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/12\/trump-ties-to-nfl-owners-go-deeper-than-stephen-ross-bob-kraft.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donors and supporters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>. Trump<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/identities\/2018\/2\/4\/16967902\/nfl-protests-patriotism-race-donald-trump-super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeatedly attacked Kaepernick and other kneeling NFL players<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Trump has called players who kneel &#8220;S.O.Bs.&#8221; The Kaepernick fallout strained relations between owners and players even more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay-Z Not Helping Himself\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay-Z has not been transparent about his motivations. That confusion has led to the backlash. Right now, he looks like a pawn, as the NFL tries to counter the accusations of racism that surrounded the Kaepernick controversy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay-Z fielded questions in New York City alongside NFL Commissioner <strong>Roger Goodell<\/strong> the day after the formal announcement. When asked if he would kneel or stand Jay-Z<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/jay-z-talks-nfl-deal-colin-kaepernick-1231736\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;I think we&#8217;ve moved past kneeling and I think it&#8217;s time to go into actionable items.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quote angered many fans and sports commentators. For a social activist who voiced support for Kaepernick in the past, Jay-Z\u2019s comments seemed out of touch. The relationship between law enforcement and communities of color is one of the most incendiary issues in our current political discourse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jay-Z deal with NFL looks a money grab. Even worse, reports slowly leaked out after the announcement that Carter possibly agreed to work with the NFL to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/sports\/2019\/08\/jay-z-will-reportedly-part-owner-of-nfl-team\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facilitate his owning a major stake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a franchise. There are rumors he wants to be part of a new ownership group for the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/chargers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Chargers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sample Criticisms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The criticism of Jay-Z\u2019s deal with the NFL has been swift and severe. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/sports\/eric-reid-criticized-jay-z-partnership-nfl-colin-kaepernick\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Reid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Colin Kaepernick\u2019s partner <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/music\/nessa-criticized-jay-z-nfl-deal-colin-kaepernick-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nessa Diab<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both expressed disappointment. As reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/music\/rihanna-jay-z-nfl-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uproxx<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re concerned the deal excluded any sort of concession toward the blackballed quarterback.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rihanna, the long-time Jay-Z collaborator who&#8217;s also signed to Roc Nation, apparently criticized the deal too. Social activist <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KingSh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaun King<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote a long Instagram post that called the deal \u2018shady and wrong.&#8217; Rihanna initially liked the post. According to the performer, the like was an error. She blamed her social media team for the error.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Miami Dolphins<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wide receiver <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StilKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Stills<\/a><\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/theshadowleague.com\/after-kenny-stills-criticized-hovs-nfl-deal-his-coach-played-jay-zs-catalog-in-the-locker-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;Talking about we&#8217;re moving past kneeling like he ever protested&#8230; Choosing to speak for the people like he had spoken to the people&#8230; I wonder if he&#8217;s read my Facebook\/IG comments or what people say to me&#8230; It didn&#8217;t seem very informed.&#8221;\u00a0 Stills has been one of the league\u2019s leading voices in the kneeling controversy and subsequent efforts to initiate community policing reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Conclusions<\/h3>\n<p>There are multiple sides to this debate. Jay-Z is the ultimate capitalist and rap&#8217;s first billionaire. Financially, the Jay-Z and NFL deal makes complete sense. A reputable argument that some fans have made is that Jay-Z can effectuate more positive change at the NFL working with them.<\/p>\n<p>Jay-Z&#8217;s brand is authenticity. Shawn Carter has never shied away from his hustling past, even though he&#8217;s no longer part of that life. His career has been one long fight against the music industry for respect, just like Colin Kaepernick&#8217;s fight is against an elite class of NFL owners.
