Big Blue built their championship legacy on defense. Players like\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MarsLe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leonard Marshall<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BankCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carl Banks<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/U\/UmenOs99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Osi Umenyiora<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StraMi02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Strahan<\/a><\/strong>, and Hall of Famer\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TaylLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lawrence Taylor<\/a> <\/strong>destroyed\u00a0offensive lines.\u00a0But with training camp underway, the Giants currently lack a dominant pass rusher.\u00a0Defensive coordinator<strong> James Bettcher <\/strong>hopes\u00a0outside linebacker <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CartLo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lorenzo Carter<\/a><\/strong>, a second-year player drafted in the third round, will become a force on the defensive line. And Carter must produce, because general manager <strong>Dave Gettleman<\/strong> waited again until the third round to draft a new pass rusher.\u00a0Old Dominion&#8217;s <strong>Oshane Ximines\u00a0<\/strong>will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/players\/playerpage\/2140954\/oshane-ximines\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">battle<\/a>\u00a0linebackers\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GoldMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Markus Golden<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MartKa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kareem Martin<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for snaps. Giants fans, the media, and observers are skeptical this defense can disrupt opposing offenses. That&#8217;s why the New York Giants lack of a pass rush will doom their defense all season long.<\/p>\n<h2>New York Giants Pass Rush Problem<\/h2>\n<p>The Giants finished the 2018 regular season with a total of just 30 sacks. The only other team in the NFL with fewer sacks was the <strong>Oakland Raiders<\/strong>, who traded linebacker\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MackKh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khalil Mack<\/a><\/strong> before the start of the 2018 season. The Giants leading sacker was defensive end <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VernOl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olivier Vernon<\/a><\/strong> (seven), who battled injuries and was eventually traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/browns\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> this off-season. Aside from the actual sacks, the Giants didn&#8217;t pressure opposing quarterbacks either. <a href=\"https:\/\/expo.nj.com\/sports\/erry-2018\/11\/cda39a47b36109\/its-not-just-sacks-giants-have.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com<\/a> broke down the defense&#8217;s lack of a pass rush in November 2018. He wrote, &#8220;Whether you sack the quarterback or not,&#8221; Giants coach <strong>Pat Shurmur<\/strong> said&#8230;, &#8220;pressure is what you&#8217;re trying to get.&#8221; But, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=126006X1587338&amp;xs=1&amp;isjs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.profootballfocus.com%2F&amp;xguid=86f0b245760521e4b0359932381c87b3&amp;xuuid=11109110bbcf171b4b9aaca0567c639b&amp;xsessid=&amp;xcreo=0&amp;xed=0&amp;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fexpo.nj.com%2Fsports%2Ferry-2018%2F11%2Fcda39a47b36109%2Fits-not-just-sacks-giants-have.html&amp;xtz=240&amp;jv=3.21.8-stackpath&amp;bv=2.5.1\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to Pro Football Focus<\/a>, through nine games, the Giants had:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>119 total pressures, which ranked 31st in the NFL<\/li>\n<li>81 quarterback hurries, which ranked tied for 28th in the NFL<\/li>\n<li>28 quarterback hits, which ranked tied for 20th in the NFL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The pass rush did not improve over the second half of the season. The Giants fired\u00a0<strong>Steve Spagnuolo <\/strong>as\u00a0defensive coordinator in 2018. New defensive coordinator James Bettcher was considered one of the most aggressive young coaches in the league when hired. And he loves to blitz.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/cardinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Cardinals<\/a>, under Bettcher, were tied for fifth in the NFL in blitz percentage in 2017. The Giants only blitzed 18.4 percent of the time, per PFF.<\/p>\n<h3>No Real Improvement<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ralph Vacchiano<\/strong>, NFL and Giants insider who&#8217;s currently with SNY, also warns the New York Giants pass rush will doom the defense. He predicts the Giants <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/5-bold-predictions-giants-2019-165520896.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will not have a player top the team-leading seven sacks<\/a> from a year ago.\u00a0Vacchiano wrote on Yahoo! Sports, &#8220;the Giants didn&#8217;t take any obvious steps to improve their putrid pass rush from a year ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They think it&#8217;s better, but they&#8217;re basing that on the hope that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CartLo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carter\u00a0<\/a>(four sacks) can take a big, second-year leap, that free agent linebacker\u00a0<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GoldMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Markus Golden<\/a><\/b>\u00a0can rediscover his pre-ACL tear form, and that with the inside presence of massive rookie\u00a0<b>Dexter Lawrence<\/b>, maybe\u00a0<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HillB.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B.J. Hill<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>(5.5 sacks) can be more dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Who&#8217;s Available?<\/h3>\n<p>The New York Giants, under GM Dave Gettleman, have shown a reluctance to sign top-tier free agents. But Big Blue should not wait to fill their glaring need on their defensive line. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/26781838\/nfl-offseason-agendas-barnwell-do-lists-all-16-nfc-teams\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESPN&#8217;s Bill Barnwell<\/a> believes Gettleman&#8217;s work is not done and they should bring in a free agent to bolster the pass rush. Hopefully, Big Blue&#8217;s front office is keeping an eye on other team rosters as training camps get underway in July. But if they&#8217;re soliciting advice, the two linebackers the Giants should consider are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PerrNi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Perry<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AchoSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Acho<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Nick Perry<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/giants\/2019\/05\/nfl-rumors-pass-rusher-remains-giants-most-glaring-need-who-are-the-best-remaining-free-agents.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Lombardo of NJ.com<\/a> wrote, &#8220;At age 28, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PerrNi00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nick Perry<\/strong><\/a> can still be a productive member of a pass rush rotation. Despite being plagued by injuries the past three seasons, Perry has 19.5 sacks, 114 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 33 quarterback hits over that span. Perry, chosen by the Packers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, is exactly the type of under the radar veteran the Giants should be targeting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>Sam Acho<\/h4>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AchoSa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Acho<\/a><\/strong> is a strong veteran presence who suffered a season-ending torn pectoral muscle in October 2018.
