While there is obviously a lot of time left until the start of the season, it\u2019s never too early to break down the current roster. Based on everything we know now, let\u2019s take a stab at predicting the New England Patriots roster.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>New England Patriots Roster Prediction 1.0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Quarterback<\/h3>\n<p><em>In: <\/em>Tom\u00a0Brady, Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham (3)<\/p>\n<p><em>Out: <\/em>Danny\u00a0Etling<\/p>\n<p>This one is pretty simple. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradTo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Brady<\/a><\/strong> is still going strong entering his age-42 season and is the unquestioned starter. As a fourth-round pick, <strong>Jarrett Stidham<\/strong> isn\u2019t ready to beat out <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HoyeBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Hoyer<\/a><\/strong> for the backup job. Historically speaking, New England typically has a rookie serve as the third-string quarterback for a season before earning the backup role during his second season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danny Etling<\/strong>, unfortunately, is the odd man out. The quarterback still has practice squad eligibility and reportedly has an NFL work ethic. He\u2019ll probably remain in Foxboro even if he never sees the active roster.<\/p>\n<h3>Running Back<\/h3>\n<p><em>In:<\/em>\u00a0Sony Michel, James White, James Develin, Rex Burkhead, Damien Harris, Brandon Bolden (6)<\/p>\n<p><em>Out: <\/em>Nick Brossette<\/p>\n<p>In a perfect world, all of these players make it healthy to Week One. While that seems unlikely, predicting injury is a bad way to perform this type of exercise. Assuming health, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MichSo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sony Michel<\/a><\/strong> remains the main back with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurkRe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rex Burkhead<\/a><\/strong> coming off the bench to give Michel some rest. <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/02\/28\/damien-harris-2019-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Damien Harris<\/strong><\/a> can take the short-yardage role while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WhitJa02,WhitJa20&amp;search=James+White&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James White<\/a><\/strong> does his usual thing out of the backfield. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DeveJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Develin<\/a><\/strong>, reliable as ever, shall remain the fullback until further notice.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BoldBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Bolden<\/a> <\/strong>can fill in at running back, but he\u2019ll primarily be a special teams player. <strong>Nick Brossette<\/strong> is a talented undrafted free agent but is facing a logjam at the position. Barring a series of injuries, it\u2019s hard to see him making the active roster.<\/p>\n<h3>Wide Receiver<\/h3>\n<p><em>In:\u00a0<\/em>N\u2019Keal Harry, Julian Edelman, Phillip Dorsett, Demaryius Thomas, Jakobi Meyers, Matthew Slater (6)<\/p>\n<p><em>Exempt: <\/em>Josh\u00a0Gordon<\/p>\n<p><em>Bubble: <\/em>Maurice\u00a0Harris, Bruce Ellington, Braxton Berrios, Ryan Davis<\/p>\n<p><em>Out:<\/em> Damoun Patterson<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdelJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julian Edelman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/03\/02\/nkeal-harry-2019-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">N\u2019Keal Harry<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DorsPh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phillip Dorsett<\/a><\/strong> are locks, but everything else is completely up in the air. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomDe03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Demaryius Thomas<\/a><\/strong> suffered an Achilles injury in December is on the wrong side of 30. He could easily start the year on the Physically Unable to Perform list or he might not even make the team. An undrafted free agent always makes the roster, and this year <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/04\/21\/jakobi-meyers-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jakobi Meyers<\/strong><\/a> is the undrafted find. The North Carolina State product was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/05\/02\/new-england-patriots-undrafted-free-agents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">best slot receivers in his conference<\/a> and could start the year backing up Julian Edelman. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SlatMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Slater<\/a><\/strong> is a receiver in name only and will continue his elite special teams work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GordJo02.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Josh Gordon<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0won&#8217;t be included in any roster projection until he&#8217;s actually eligible to play.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrMa05.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Harris<\/a><\/strong> has flashed promise but has yet to put it together consistently in the NFL. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/ElliBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Ellington<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s best days are long behind him and his hamstring woes are well-documented. <strong>Ryan Davis<\/strong> could sneak on the final roster as a punt returner. If <strong>Damoun Patterson <\/strong>makes the roster, something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.<\/p>\n<h3>Tight End<\/h3>\n<p><em>In: <\/em>Austin\u00a0Seferian-Jenkins, Ryan Izzo (2)<\/p>\n<p><em>Bubble: <\/em>Matt\u00a0LaCosse, Andrew Beck<\/p>\n<p><em>Out: <\/em>Stephen\u00a0Anderson<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SefeAu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Seferian-Jenkins<\/a> <\/strong>should be the top tight end in the offense, but <strong>Ryan Izzo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LaCoMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt LaCosse<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong>Andrew Beck<\/strong> all stand a shot at earning the backup job. Izzo gets the nod for now, as the 2018 seventh-round pick reportedly impressed in 2018\u2019s training camp. While a foot injury cost him his rookie season, he should be fully recovered for the start of 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndeSt01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Anderson<\/a><\/strong> is a mediocre pass catcher who struggles as a blocker. With New England featuring a run-heavy offense, New England will probably value the blocking tight ends over Anderson.<\/p>\n<h3>Offensive Line<\/h3>\n<p><em>In: <\/em>Isaiah\u00a0Wynn, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Marcus Cannon, Yodny Cajuste, Hjalte Froholdt, Cole Croston (8)<\/p>\n<p><em>Bubble: <\/em>Ted\u00a0Karras<\/p>\n<p><em>Out: <\/em>James Ferentz, Jake Eldrenkamp, Tyler Gauthier, Calvin Anderson, Tyree St. Louis<\/p>\n<p>Most of this grouping is pretty self-explanatory. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/05\/04\/isaiah-wynn-new-england-patriots-x-factors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Wynn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThunJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Thuney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndrDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Andrews<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MasoSh01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaq Mason<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CannMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Cannon<\/a><\/strong> should comprise the starting offensive line. <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/01\/28\/2019-nfl-draft-prospect-yodny-cajuste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Yodny Cajuste <\/strong><\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/04\/07\/hjalte-froholdt-2019-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <strong>Hjalte Froholdt<\/strong><\/a> will serve as the top depth options and are locks for the final roster.<\/p>\n<p>This leaves <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrosCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cole Croston<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=KarrTe00,KarrTe20,KarrTe21&amp;search=Ted+Karras&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Karras<\/a><\/strong> battling for the final roster spot. While either player could easily win it, right now the nod goes to Croston. Croston can play tackle, while Karras is purely an interior offensive lineman. With the relative uncertainty at the tackle position, New England should carry as many tackles as possible.<\/p>\n<h3>Defensive Line<\/h3>\n<p><em>In: <\/em>Deatrich\u00a0Wise, Chase Winovich, Lawrence Guy, Mike Pennel, Michael Bennett, John Simon, Adam Butler, Derek Rivers (8)<\/p>\n<p><em>Bubble: <\/em>Keionta\u00a0Davis, Byron Cowart<\/p>\n<p><em>Out: <\/em>Ufomba Kamalu, Nick Thurman, Trent Harris, Shilique Calhoun<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=BennMi99,BennMi01,BennMi00&amp;search=Michael+Bennett&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Bennett<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GuyxLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lawrence Guy<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PennMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Pennel<\/a><\/strong> will start, but the fourth starting spot is up for grabs. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WiseDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deatrich Wise<\/a><\/strong> has the best shot at earning that spot, but rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/04\/05\/chase-winovich-2019-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chase Winovich<\/strong><\/a> could easily take it. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=SimoJo01,SimoJo00&amp;search=John+Simon&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Simon<\/a><\/strong> was one of the best under the radar signings of the off-season and should provide valuable depth. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RiveDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Rivers<\/a><\/strong> has one last year to prove he was worthy of the third-round investment back in 2017. Now two years removed from his ACL injury, he should be back to full strength and ready to play.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth-round rookie <strong>Byron Cowart<\/strong> was one of the last cuts on the roster and he could easily beat out a guy like Rivers for the final spot. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviKe03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keionta Davis<\/a><\/strong> has struggled during his limited time on the field but the coaching staff seems to love him. He has NFL athleticism but needs to learn how to set the edge and not overpursue.<\/p>\n<h3>Linebacker<\/h3>\n<p><em>In: <\/em>Dont&#8217;a\u00a0Hightower, Kyle Van Noy, Ja&#8217;Whaun Bentley, Elandon Roberts, Brandon King (5)<\/p>\n<p><em>Bubble: <\/em>Christian Sam<\/p>\n<p><em>Out: <\/em>Terez Hall, Calvin Munson<\/p>\n<p>Barring injury, this group is set in stone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HighDo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dont\u2019a Hightower<\/strong><\/a> played like his old self during the final half of the 2018 season and should maintain that level of play. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VanNKy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Van Noy<\/a><\/strong> was arguably New England\u2019s best linebacker during their playoff run and is one of the most underrated players in the league. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BentJa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ja\u2019Whaun Bentley<\/strong><\/a> looked like a star during his abbreviated rookie season.<\/p>\n<h3>Cornerback<\/h3>\n<p><em>In:\u00a0<\/em>Stephon\u00a0Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jason McCourty, Joejuan Williams, Johnathan Jones, Duke Dawson, Keion Crossen (7)<\/p>\n<p><em>Bubble: <\/em>Ken Webster<\/p>\n<p><em>Out: <\/em>D\u2019Angelo Ross<\/p>\n<p>There is no such thing as too many good cornerbacks in today\u2019s pass-happy NFL. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GilmSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Gilmore<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackJ.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.C. Jackson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCoJa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason McCourty<\/a><\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/04\/20\/joejuan-williams-2019-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Joejuan Williams<\/strong><\/a> should combine to form one of the best secondaries in the league. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneJo03.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jonathan Jones<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is one of the better slot cornerbacks in the league and should hold onto his job for at least one more season. <strong>Duke Dawson<\/strong> didn\u2019t see the field as a rookie but should benefit from a healthy off-season. New England needs to see if he can be the slot cornerback of the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrosKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keion Crossen<\/a><\/strong> and seventh-round pick <strong>Ken Webster<\/strong> are fighting for the same job. Both players can play cornerback when required but are better suited for special teams. Seeing as Crossen already proved he can thrive in this role, he earns the nod in this projection.<\/p>\n<h3>Safety<\/h3>\n<p><em>In: <\/em>Devin\u00a0McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duron Harmon, Obi Melifonwu, Nate Ebner (5)<\/p>\n<p><em>Out:<\/em> Malik Gant, A.J.
