He was a consensus four-star prospect and was named the number one offensive guard in the country. As the leading senior presence at University High School, Brumfield anchored the offensive line and finished the season with a 13-1 record.

Brumfield began his journey at LSU as a redshirt freshman in the 2015 season. He played in the final 11 games, lining up for LSU’s point after touchdown attempts as well as infrequent offensive line play. His sophomore season gave him the opportunity to play for both special teams unit and offensive line. In the eight games Brumfield played on offensive line that season, he allowed zero sacks and was called for one penalty. Brumfield was a full-time starter on the offensive line for the Tigers for his final two seasons and has played in 45 games over the course of his collegiate career.
His junior year saw him start all 13 games and help block for 1,000-yard rusher Derrius Guice. Brumfield played every offensive snap for nine games that season and was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week after he recorded 11.5 knockdowns in a win against BYU. In addition to this, his junior year led him to be named second-team All-SEC as voted by coaches. During his senior season, Brumfield was injured in a game against Louisiana Tech and had to miss four games as a result. He later returned and finished the final five games of the season. Brumfield played 530 offensive snaps and recorded 13 knockdowns.

Strengths

exceptional pass protection, he is able to anchor himself extremely well;

fiery, determined competitor;

always seeking contact and to make the correct play;

exceptional power, frame, and conditioning;

has the strength to stifle and immobilize opponents;

able to mirror opponents/match speed in space.

Weaknesses

often has trouble redirecting momentum when in open space scenarios;

stops feet on contact with the defender, limiting his abilities;

very heavy footed, sometimes cannot move/slide laterally to actively with defenders;

tends to lunge and lead with his arms, leading him to be beat over the top;

struggles to recover when beat by edge rushers;

poor job recognizing defensive flow.

Teams With Need at Position: Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings

Projection: Fourth or fifth round

Bottom Line

Despite having his stock fall since he was the top offensive guard in the country, Brumfield would provide a substantial boost to any team with offensive line troubles. Brumfield provides an extremely strong, sturdy force up-front that works exceptionally in pass protection. His main concerns come when we see his lateral agility (or lack thereof), and his tendency to lunge into defenders. While those characteristics may or may not improve over the course of his career, his lunging habit can definitely be helped once he’s in the presence of veteran players and coaches. And in addition to this, Brumfield’s abilities transfer both on and off the field. In reference to Brumfield, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said “His leadership has been critical… He’s like a coach on the field.” While he may not be first overall talent-wise, Brumfield’s strong presence and football mind will aide any team with dysfunction up front.

Embed from Getty Images

Since high school, Garrett Brumfield has been a force to be reckoned with.
