They began by shoring up their offensive line. After that, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/sports\/football\/bears\/ct-spt-bears-dion-sims-cut-20190220-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">parted ways<\/a> with tight end <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SimsDi00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dion Sims<\/strong><\/a>. The Bears then made the move many expected since the team\u2019s loss in the Wild Card and announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/ParkCo03.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cody Parkey<\/strong><\/a> would not be returning next season. The former two moves may be pointing to a plan of attack as the rest of the offseason unfolds.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bears?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Bears<\/a> have decided to release K Cody Parkey at the start of the league year, sources say. A fresh start is welcomed by both parties, and the Pro Bowler will likely find work quickly. He\u2019s still due $3.5M guaranteed on his 2019 contract.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RapSheet\/status\/1099078342974885888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">February 22, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h1>Chicago Bears Off-Season Market: Analyzing the Trends<\/h1>\n<h2>Blocker Locked Up<\/h2>\n<p>When the Bears <a href=\"https:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2019\/01\/26\/bears-extend-bobby-massie-through-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agreed to terms<\/a> with tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MassBo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bobby Massie<\/strong><\/a> on a new contract it signaled two things. One, that they felt the line was not the issue in 2018&#8217;s subpar rushing attack. The other thing the move hints at is the team not likely to dramatically alter their offensive approach. They will continue to skew more toward the pass and utilize screens and dump-offs to supplement the run.<\/p>\n<p>Massie&#8217;s deal is for four years, but it is really only prohibitive for the first two years. In other words, the Bears could still look to find an eventual replacement after the 2020 season. That player would likely come via the draft as opposed to free agency this year, however. Chicago currently has no picks until the third round of this year\u2019s draft so any tackle prospects would likely be developmental.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of Massie&#8217;s new deal, the Bears could look to rework guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LongKy00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kyle Long<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s contract to free up some additional money. The three-time Pro Bowler has not played a full season since 2015 after signing a four-year extension prior to the 2016 season. When healthy he is the Bears best lineman and brings an aspect of nastiness that shows, especially in the run game.<\/p>\n<h2>Secondary Guessing<\/h2>\n<p>Chicago has about $12.8 million in cap space after Massie&#8217;s contract and waiving Sims. That money is likely going towards a safety in free agency. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milehighreport.com\/2019\/2\/9\/18215088\/potential-broncos-free-agent-target-safety-adrian-amos\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reports<\/a> surfaced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AmosAd00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Adrian Amos<\/strong><\/a> could be reuniting with former Bears defensive boss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverbroncos.com\/team\/coaches-roster\/vic-fangio\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Vic Fangio<\/strong><\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nfl-teams\/broncos\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denver Broncos<\/a>. It was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/chicago\/bears\/bears-and-adrian-amos-have-been-talking-back-and-forth\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that Chicago wants Amos, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.profootballfocus.com\/nfl\/players\/adrian-amos\/9575\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pro Football Focus<\/a> darling, back. But he previously lost his starting role to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackEd01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eddie Jackson<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CallBr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bryce Callahan<\/strong><\/a> is also likely to depart from Chicago after a stellar season that was cut short by injury after 13 games. He is a smaller defender who plays bigger than his size in the slot. He has also been injury-prone to this point in his career amd has never played in more games than he did this season. Add in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/nfl\/2018\/8\/21\/17762720\/nfl-premium-position-slot-cornerback\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">going rate<\/a> for top nickel defenders and it is not far fetched to think Chicago looks for a slot corner in the draft.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears struggles across the middle last year have been <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2019\/01\/26\/bears-need-improvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">documented<\/a>. Some of the issues can be attributed to scheme, but there was still room for improvement. Moving to upgrade the safety and nickel positions would show the coaching staff feels the same way. The safety market is better than the one for nickel corners headlined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CollLa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Landon Collins<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ClinHa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>HaHa Clinton-Dix<\/strong><\/a>. Neither will be cheap but both could be good fits as playmakers in new DC <strong>Chuck Pagano<\/strong>\u2019s scheme.<\/p>\n<h2>Little to a Lot<\/h2>\n<p>There are a lot of questions still for this young, up and coming team. They have to be looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/nfl\/chicago-bears\/Article\/Chicago-Bears-Jaguars-drop-off-2019-129234903\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">avoid being<\/a>\u00a02019\u2019s version of last year&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nfl-teams\/jaguars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a>. Can they improve the ground attack with the same personnel only better health? Will they move on from one of their homegrown standouts? That all remains to be seen.
