Despite his lack of consistency throughout the season,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HogaCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Hogan<\/a><\/strong> may be the key to keeping the Patriots atop the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Jets<\/a> in week 17.<\/p>\n<h1>The Stars May Be Aligning for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HogaCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Hogan<\/a> in Week 17<\/h1>\n<h2>New York Jets Defensive Outlook<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ClaiMo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morris Claiborne<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnTr05,JohnTr02&amp;search=Trumaine+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trumaine Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, the Jets top defensive backs, both missed practice on Wednesday. Claiborne is battling injuries to both his shoulder and his ankle, which makes him less likely to appear on the field for the Jets this week. Johnson, however, was reportedly held out of practice for an &#8220;in-house matter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BowlTo20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Bowles<\/a> says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnTr05,JohnTr02&amp;search=Trumaine+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trumaine Johnson<\/a>\u2019s absence is an \u201cin-house matter that we\u2019re dealing with.\u201d When asked if he\u2019ll play Sunday, Bowles said \u201cwe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not what you want from a guy you gave five years and $72.5 million to. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Jets?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Jets<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Connor Hughes (@Connor_J_Hughes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Connor_J_Hughes\/status\/1078023524957278220?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">December 26, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Recent updates have suggested that Johnson does intend to play on Sunday, despite\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BowlTo20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Bowles<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; non-committal response.<\/p>\n<p>The absence of Claiborne would be a boon for the Patriots. Claiborne has 14 passes defensed and two interceptions this season, putting him in the same conversation as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HumpMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marlon Humphrey<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JenkJa03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Janoris Jenkins<\/a><\/strong> this season.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SkriBu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buster Skrine<\/a><\/strong> would be the most likely candidate to move outside, which sounds like a better scenario than it actually is. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ganggreennation.com\/2018\/7\/12\/17564380\/is-buster-skrine-really-better-in-the-slot-new-york-jets-coverage-stats\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an off-season article<\/a> by Gang Green Nation, Skrine is a more than capable outside cornerback, despite what his relegation to nickel corner might imply. Skrine also made an appearance on the Jets injury report this week, but he participated fully in Wednesday&#8217;s practice.<\/p>\n<h2>A Good Time to Get Hot<\/h2>\n<p>The Jets aren&#8217;t exactly stifling in terms of receiving defense, despite having <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/08\/31\/2018-afc-east-breakdown-by-position-defense-and-special-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a decent squad<\/a> in the defensive backfield. In their last three games, the Jets secondary allowed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/St.BEq00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Equanimeous St. Brown<\/a><\/strong> 94 yards on five targets,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HopkDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeAndre Hopkins<\/a><\/strong> 170 yards on 11 targets and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FostRo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Foster<\/a><\/strong> 104 yards on eight targets. It&#8217;s worth noting that those three receivers combined for only\u00a0<em>two\u00a0<\/em>incompletions.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets defense is allowing receivers to get hot, and \u2014 with the exception of Hopkins \u2014 they&#8217;re allowing receivers that haven&#8217;t been very hot all year to get hot.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TaylTa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taywan Taylor<\/a><\/strong> did it to them in week 13. St. Brown and Foster both go on that list.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been the false prophet of Chris Hogan&#8217;s big game time and time again this season. He did have some success in week 12 against the Jets with two catches that both went for 20 or more yards. The Jets have below-average DVOA against receivers both deep-left and deep-right.\u00a0Gang Green is allowing a 64 percent completion rate to wide receivers deep up the right sideline and eight touchdowns this season anywhere outside the hash to the right.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GordJo02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Gordon<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0gone, Hogan is the team&#8217;s best receiver deep up the sidelines. Given the way that his season has gone, it&#8217;s unlikely he sees more than five targets, but those five targets should be significant ones.<\/p>\n<h2>Last Word(s) on Week 17<\/h2>\n<p>As our own\u00a0<strong>David Latham<\/strong> noted in <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/12\/27\/new-england-patriots-gameplan-stopping-improved-sam-darnold-week-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this week&#8217;s gameplan<\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DarnSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Darnold<\/a><\/strong> is on the upswing as he approaches the end of his rookie season with the Jets. The Patriots are going to want to do their best to keep Darnold and his emergent (but inconsistent) pass-catching duo in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndeRo04.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robby Anderson<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HernCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christopher Herndon<\/a><\/strong> off the field as much as they can. The Patriots secondary should have little trouble limiting Anderson and Herndon enough to provide a modicum of a lead before halftime.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/12\/23\/new-england-patriots-clinch-afc-east-win-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Last week<\/a>, the Patriots bullied the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Bills<\/a> on the ground. The ground unit combined for 262 rushing yards and two scores on 43 attempts, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MichSo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sony Michel<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BurkRe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rex Burkhead<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WhitJa02,WhitJa20&amp;search=James+White&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James White<\/a><\/strong> should see an elevated number of touches in this contest as well.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;ll be easy to chalk\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdelJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julian Edelman<\/a><\/strong> up for a score, a hefty chunk of the team&#8217;s target share and somewhere between 50 and 80 receiving yards, especially if Skrine sees most of his snaps on the outside.<\/p>\n<p>But it also makes sense for the Patriots to save their star receiver for the postseason. The Patriots no longer have\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AmenDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Amendola<\/a><\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/01\/24\/danny-amendola-patriots-postseason-legend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chew up the playoffs<\/a> in the slot, which means that Edelman will have to step up in his place. Limiting snaps for\u00a0Edelman and the injury-prone\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GronRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Gronkowski<\/a><\/strong> is a necessary reality for this game even with the first-round bye still in the playoff picture.
