He was released by the <strong>Denver Broncos<\/strong> shortly before the Cowboys signed him. ESPN&#8217;s Adam Schefter initially reported on both stories, citing league sources.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Former Broncos and Eagles QB Mark Sanchez is going to sign with the Dallas Cowboys, league source tells ESPN.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamSchefter\/status\/772166837811417088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 3, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dallas Cowboys Sign Quarterback Mark Sanchez<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sanchez was released by the Broncos after he lost the starting job competition to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SiemTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Siemian<\/a><\/strong>. He is expected to back up rookie quarterback <strong>Dak Prescott<\/strong> in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez was drafted by the <strong>New York Jets<\/strong> out of the <strong>University of Southern California<\/strong> (USC) in 2009 NFL Draft. He led the Jets to two consecutive AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010. They lost both games.<\/p>\n<p>After an infamous fumble against the <strong>New England Patriots<\/strong> on Thanksgiving night 2011, his play has declined. Sanchez joined the <strong>Philadelphia Eagles<\/strong> in 2014. He took over a 6-2 team after quarterback <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FoleNi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Foles<\/a><\/strong> broke his collarbone. The Eagles would lose four of their final eight games and missed the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>The Broncos are coming off of a victory in Super Bowl 50 over the <strong>Carolina Panthers<\/strong>. After the game, quarterback <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MannPe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peyton Manning<\/a><\/strong> retired. This meant that the Broncos needed to find a quarterback to replace him. Quarterback <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/O\/OsweBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock Osweiler<\/a><\/strong>, who took over the team for a short while, signed with the <strong>Houston Texans <\/strong>in free agency.<\/p>\n<p>The Broncos signed Sanchez in hopes that he could lead the team. They also drafted quarterback <strong>Paxton Lynch<\/strong> with the 31st overall pick in April&#8217;s draft. The competition was between these two and Siemian. Siemian won, and Lynch was named the backup quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>As for the Cowboys, they will be without quarterback <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RomoTo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Romo<\/a><\/strong> for the first six to ten weeks of the season as he fractured a bone in his spine in a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. This means Prescott, who the Cowboys drafted with the 135th overall pick, will start.
