{"id":5058,"date":"2016-10-30T18:58:33","date_gmt":"2016-10-30T22:58:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/?p=5058"},"modified":"2016-11-01T04:31:42","modified_gmt":"2016-11-01T08:31:42","slug":"adam-humphries-third-wide-receivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2016\/10\/30\/adam-humphries-third-wide-receivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Adam Humphries and the Value of Third Wide Receivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most teams have a number one wide receiver they can go to any time they need to, whether it&#8217;s for a touchdown, a big play, or just for a vital first down that they need.\u00a0Sometimes a team has two receivers that they trust.\u00a0Very often, however,\u00a0a sign of a versatile offense is that it has a quality third receiver who can hold his own and take pressure off the other receivers.<\/p>\n<h2>Adam Humphries and the Value of Third Wide Receivers<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HumpAd00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Humphries<\/a><\/strong> provides a reliable third option for the <strong>Tampa Bay Buccaneers,<\/strong> especially with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackVi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vincent Jackson<\/a><\/strong> on the downside of his career at age 33. Humphries has become more prominent now that Jackson is on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/sports\/football\/bucs\/bucs-vincent-jackson-out-with-torn-acl-career-in-jeopardy\/2299104\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">injured reserve<\/a> with a torn ACL.\u00a0While he stands\u00a0only 5&#8217;11&#8221; and weighs 195 pounds, Humphries is energetic and instinctive on his passing routes and he can scamper like a jack rabbit.<\/p>\n<p>Humphries is in his second season in the NFL with Tampa Bay and he played 13 games last year, but in 2016 he has the second most targets on the team with 34, and he&#8217;s also second on the team in catches\u00a0(22) and receiving yards (233).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WinsJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jameis Winston<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=EvanMi20,EvanMi00,EvanMi21&amp;search=Mike+Evans&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Evans<\/a><\/strong> are developing some of the best chemistry between a quarterback and a receiver in the <strong>NFL<\/strong>, but with Jackson\u00a0and passing back <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SimsCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Sims<\/a> <\/strong>on injured reserve, even more attention will be paid to Evans and that&#8217;s saying something.<\/p>\n<p>The competition to be the second option in the offense will likely rotate among Humphries, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShepRu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russell Shepard<\/a><\/strong>, who already has a touchdown on eight catches, and tight end <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BratCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Brate<\/a><\/strong>, who is third on the team with 31 targets and 20 catches and has two touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Humphries also adds value to the Buccaneers special teams by being a kick returner and is one of the top <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/videos\/nfl-game-highlights\/0ap3000000726387\/Humphries-muffs-punt-and-scoops-it-back-up-for-15-yards?icampaign=%22search-video-Adam+Humphries%22\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">punt returners<\/a> in the NFL. He&#8217;s the secondary kick returner with two returns for an average of 14.5 yards per return. Humphries is tied for fourth in the NFL with 13 punt returns and tenth with 133 punt return yards. He averages 10.2 yards per punt return, and he&#8217;s 25th in the NFL in All-Purpose yards with 408.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, there are many impactful third wide receivers who are valuable contributors to their teams. Let&#8217;s take a look at some of them.<\/p>\n<h3>The Top 20\u00a0Third Wide Receivers\u00a0in the NFL<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BoldAn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anquan Boldin<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Detroit Lions<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TateGo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Golden Tate<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JoneMa23,JoneMa02&amp;search=Marvin+Jones&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marvin Jones<\/a><\/strong> are the playmakers, but at age 36, Boldin is as reliable as ever. He has 32 catches, 272 yards and four touchdowns.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PerrBr02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Breshad Perriman<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Baltimore Ravens<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AikeKa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kamar Aiken<\/a><\/strong> was a breakout player last season but Perriman has gotten more targets this year. He averages 13.1 yards per reception, second on the team.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FloyMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Floyd<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Arizona Cardinals<\/strong>:\u00a0Floyd and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=BrowJo22,BrowJo02,BrowJo21&amp;search=John+Brown&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Brown<\/a><\/strong> can flip-flop but Brown has more targets, receptions, and yards. Floyd does have three touchdowns, however.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SneaWi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willie Snead<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>New Orleans Saints<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CookBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandin Cooks<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ThomMi02,ThomMi05&amp;search=Michael+Thomas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Thomas<\/a><\/strong> have emerged, but Snead has still chipped in with two touchdowns.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrowJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamison Crowder<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Washington Redskins<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GarcPi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre Garcon<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JackDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeSean Jackson<\/a><\/strong> are more talented, but Crowder has more catches and more touchdowns.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShepSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sterling Shepard<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>New York Giants<\/strong>: The Giants are easing <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CruzVi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victor Cruz<\/a><\/strong> back into action and the rookie is reaping the benefits.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillTe01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terrance Williams<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Dallas Cowboys<\/strong>:\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BeasCo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cole Beasley<\/a><\/strong> was the third receiver before the season\u00a0but now he&#8217;s moved past Williams, who&#8217;s still productive with the injury-prone Bryant in and out.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LeexMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marqise Lee<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Jacksonville Jaguars<\/strong>: Lee has caught a higher percentage of his targets than either <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobiAl02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allen Robinson<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HurnAl01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allen Hurns<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/I\/InmaDo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dontrelle Inman<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>San Diego Chargers<\/strong>: Inman has only 17 catches, but he&#8217;ll sneak up on teams and pile up the yards. He has 237 yards on a 13.9 average.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AdamDa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Davante Adams<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Green Bay Packers<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NelsJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordy Nelson<\/a><\/strong> doesn&#8217;t look explosive coming off the ACL injury, but Adams has produced five touchdowns and leads the team with 12.5 yards per noreferrer\">Seth Roberts<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Oakland Raiders<\/strong>: It&#8217;s tough to get catches being on the same team as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoopAm00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Coleman<\/a><\/strong> by averaging 10.8 yards per catch.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a
