{"id":50032,"date":"2018-09-24T16:43:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T20:43:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=50032"},"modified":"2018-09-24T16:43:03","modified_gmt":"2018-09-24T20:43:03","slug":"browns-name-baker-mayfield-starter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2018\/09\/24\/browns-name-baker-mayfield-starter\/","title":{"rendered":"Cleveland Browns Name Baker Mayfield Starting Quarterback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MayfBa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baker Mayfield<\/a><\/strong> is officially taking the reins of the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/browns\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> offense.<\/p>\n<p>That was confirmed on Monday when head coach <strong>Hue Jackson<\/strong> announced the rookie out of Oklahoma would make his first career start against the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/raiders\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oakland Raiders<\/a> in Week Four.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(Mayfield) is the starting quarterback of this football team,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/24783519\/baker-mayfield-named-starter-cleveland-browns\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jackson said in comments to the media<\/a>. &#8220;We know it&#8217;s a long season, all kind of things can happen. Baker Mayfield is the starting quarterback of this team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bakermayfield?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@bakermayfield<\/a> has been named our starting QB \ud83c\udfaf <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xqn17Df15j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/xqn17Df15j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Cleveland Browns (@Browns) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Browns\/status\/1044269614706950144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 24, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mayfield saw his first NFL regular season action late in the first half of the Browns matchup with the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/jets\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Jets<\/a> last Thursday night. At the time, his team trailed 14-0. But after replacing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TaylTy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyrod Taylor<\/a><\/strong>, he led them on a fierce fightback as the Browns outscored the Jets 21-3 the rest of the way in the comeback victory. It was Cleveland&#8217;s first win since December 24, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Though he didn&#8217;t throw any touchdown passes, he played mistake-free football and put the Browns in position to score two touchdowns which proved crucial. It included a pinpoint strike to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LandJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarvis Landry<\/a><\/strong> in the third quarter which set up a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HydeCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlos Hyde<\/a><\/strong> one-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing two-point conversion, Landry completed a pass to Mayfield to tie the game 14-14.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, Mayfield completed 17 of 23 passes for 201 yards against the Jets and finished with a highly impressive total QBR of 94.9.<\/p>\n<p>Mayfield&#8217;s maiden start will come on the road against a Raiders team who&#8217;ve lost their first three games in head coach <strong>Jon Gruden<\/strong>&#8216;s return to the sidelines. He&#8217;ll be looking to send them to 0-4 for the first time since 2014 all the while leading Cleveland to its first winning streak since Week Nine of that same season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t come here to win one game, and I didn&#8217;t come here just to start the next,&#8221; Mayfield emphasized in the wake of the announcement. &#8220;We&#8217;re building a franchise here and we&#8217;re turning it around.
