Linebacker Aldon Smith<\/a> hasn’t suited up for the Oakland Raiders<\/strong> since Week Ten of last season, a 30-14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings<\/strong>. After Smith pleaded not guilty to several misdemeanors, including drunk driving, a hit-and-run, and vandalism, the NFL suspended him for an entire season.<\/p>\n

Aldon Smith Applies for Reinstatement<\/h2>\n

This morning, general manager Reggie McKenzie<\/a> informed reporters that\u00a0Aldon Smith\u00a0has applied for reinstatement to the NFL<\/strong>. After a video of a man who said he was Smith<\/a> smoking marijuana surfaced on the internet, the young pass rusher checked into rehab. The NFL has investigated the video and found no evidence that it was Smith in the video.<\/p>\n

Aldon Smith recently left rehab, and has reportedly been staying in shape. Since Smith chose to go to rehab, and wasn’t forced by the league,\u00a0sources close to the former All-Pro believe it will help his cause. When asked about whether he believed Smith would be allowed back on the field, McKenzie said \u201cHe is in a great place and that\u2019s the main thing. Whether Goodell lets him out or not, that\u2019s the important thing – that he\u2019s healthy and happy. But I would hope that we as a league reward a guy – with stipulations – who goes through the right steps and wants to get better and get his life in order<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

It’s up to NFL commissioner whether Aldon Smith is allowed to return to the team, but if he is, there’s no question that the Raiders will immediately improve. Despite the best efforts of Khalil Mack<\/a> and Bruce Irvin<\/a>, the Raiders have only registered nine sacks in seven games. With Smith returning to the lineup, the young Raiders team could improve on defense and become a real post-season threat.<\/p>\n
