The breakdown will contain \u201cthe best\u201d at each unit followed by \u201cthe rest\u201d in descending order.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>2018 NFC West Breakdown by Position: The Defense and Special Teams<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2>Defensive Line<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/rams\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Rams<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/cardinals\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Cardinals<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/49ers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/seahawks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle Seahawks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Assuming his holdout comes to an end, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DonaAa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Donald<\/a><\/strong> will have the chance to form a fearsome interior partnership with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SuhxNd99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ndamukong Suh<\/a><\/strong>. The flexibility of Wade Phillips&#8217; 3-4 front should allow them plenty of opportunities to get on the field at the same time and wreak havoc against opposing centers and guards. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BrocMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Brockers<\/a><\/strong> is coming off a career-high in tackles and will look to reproduce that kind of form as he comes back from a torn ACL.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinals&#8217; switch to a 4-3 shouldn&#8217;t have any impact on the production of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JoneCh03,JoneCh07&amp;search=Chandler+Jones&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chandler Jones<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GoldMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Markus Golden<\/a><\/strong>, an edge rush duo deserving of much wider acclaim. There is plenty of talent on the interior, too. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeteCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Peters<\/a><\/strong> was third in run stop rate among defensive linemen and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PierOl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olsen Pierre<\/a><\/strong> had 5.5 sacks in seven starts. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GuntRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rodney Gunter<\/a><\/strong> provides useful depth but for this group to reach another level <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NkemRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Nkemdiche<\/a><\/strong> needs to realize his potential.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco&#8217;s interior depth is remarkable, but it has not delivered sacks. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BuckDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeForest Buckner<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s outstanding first two years have gone largely unnoticed but he has been a one-man wrecking crew up front. He had 29 hurries and 19 hits last year but just three sacks. Finishing those pressures off this year is pivotal for the Niners, who will look for former third overall pick <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomSo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solomon Thomas<\/a><\/strong> to make the leap as a sophomore. Contributions are also needed from another former first-rounder in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/ArmsAr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arik Armstead<\/a><\/strong> as he returns from injury. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DayxSh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sheldon Day<\/a><\/strong> boasts quickness and versatility while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneD.01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D.J. Jones<\/a><\/strong> and seventh-rounder rookie <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jullian-taylor-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jullian Taylor<\/a><\/strong> have flashed in preseason. A lack of edge talent has been the Niners&#8217; Achilles heel, though. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MarsCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cassius Marsh<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AttaJe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeremiah Attaochu<\/a><\/strong> are tasked with fixing that.<\/p>\n<p>It is the inverse issue in Seattle, where <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ClarFr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Clark<\/a><\/strong> is developing nicely, recording nine sacks last season. The Seahawks will need to replace the 8.5 sacks <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=BennMi99,BennMi00,BennMi01&amp;search=Michael+Bennett&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Bennett<\/a><\/strong> had in 2017 and have seen promising signs from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/rasheem-green-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rasheem Green<\/a><\/strong>, who played off the edge and on the interior in college. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/ReedJa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarran Reed<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnTo01,JohnTo21&amp;search=Tom+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Johnson<\/a><\/strong> have some interior pass rush talent, but Seattle is lacking in that area. However, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/poona-ford-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poona Ford<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s eye-catching play in preseason offers hope that the Seahawks have found someone who can push the pocket from the middle.<\/p>\n<h2>Linebacker<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best<\/strong>: Seattle Seahawks<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest<\/strong>: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams<\/p>\n<p>While much of the veteran core of the Seahawks defense is gone, linebacker <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WagnBo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Wagner<\/a><\/strong> remains. An elite player at the position, Wagner excels in every facet of linebacker play. Wagner is a three-time All-Pro and has a similarly talented player next to him in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WrigK.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K.J. Wright<\/a><\/strong>. A criminally underrated defender who consistently impresses defending the pass, the presence of Wright alongside Wagner in the middle of the field arguably makes the Seahawks linebackers the strength of the team. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MingBa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barkevious Mingo<\/a><\/strong> is set to play the strong side for Seattle and will try to avoid becoming a weak link after a nice year in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinals&#8217; transition to a 4-3 defense will see <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/ReddHa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Haason Reddick<\/a><\/strong> go from defensive end to strongside linebacker. He should be able to provide plenty of pass rush from that spot after logging 14 hurries in 2017. The coverage skills of converted safety <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BucaDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deone Bucannon<\/a><\/strong> will be pivotal to the success of the Cardinals defense. Bucannon is set to play the weakside and stay on the field on nickel downs. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/ByneJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Bynes<\/a><\/strong> earned a three-year extension with his play in limited time in 2017 but will come off the field in non-base downs. Depth is a problem for Arizona, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HodgGe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerald Hodges<\/a><\/strong> the most experienced option underneath that trio.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FostRe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuben Foster<\/a><\/strong> will miss the first two games of the season through suspension. However, the 49ers will still get 14 regular-season games of a player many believe is already one of the best in the business after an outstanding rookie year. When Foster is not on the field, though, the Niners look vulnerable at linebacker. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitMa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Smith<\/a> <\/strong>is back from a torn pectoral that cost him all of 2017 but struggled in coverage in Oakland. That is an area of the game in which backup <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoylBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brock Coyle<\/a><\/strong> is similarly exploitable, meaning the Niners may turn to rookie <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/fred-warner-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fred Warner<\/a><\/strong>, who had seven interceptions at BYU. The options at SAM linebacker are sparse, with the trade of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HaroEl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eli Harold<\/a><\/strong> leaving <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NzeoMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Nzeocha<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TaumPi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pita Taumoepenu<\/a> <\/strong>battling it out.<\/p>\n<p>Linebacker is one of the few areas in which the Rams appear deficient. They&#8217;ll be seeking a more noticeable impact from former safety <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BarrMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Barron<\/a><\/strong>, particularly in coverage. Outside linebackers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EbukSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samson Ebukam<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LongMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Longacre<\/a><\/strong> have only 7.5 sacks between them and the Rams are still searching for answers at that spot even at this late juncture. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LittCo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cory Littleton<\/a><\/strong> is the favorite to play next to Barron on the inside after impressing throughout the offseason, though he just five starts in his career. The more experienced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WilsRa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ramik Wilson<\/a><\/strong> and rookie <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/micah-kiser-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micah Kiser<\/a><\/strong> are among those the Rams have in reserve. Don&#8217;t be surprised if Rams opponents look to attack the intermediate areas to exploit this group.<\/p>\n<h2>Cornerback<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best<\/strong>: Los Angeles Rams<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest<\/strong>: San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks<\/p>\n<p>In adding <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeteMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Peters<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TaliAq99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aqib Talib<\/a> <\/strong>this offseason, the Rams acquired the best playmaking corner in the NFL and a veteran well-versed in Phillips&#8217; defense. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RobeNi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nickell Robey-Coleman<\/a><\/strong> emerged as one of the top slot corners in football in his first year in Los Angeles. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShieSa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sam Shields<\/a><\/strong> has a history of concussions but by signing the former Packer the Rams added a depth piece who is capable of starting for numerous teams.<\/p>\n<p>The big question surrounding the 49ers&#8217; corners is whether <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SherRi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Sherman<\/a><\/strong> can be his old self post-Achilles surgery. If the answer is yes, he gives the Niners a corner still capable of locking down top-tier wideouts. Sherman is already serving as a mentor to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WithAh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ahkello Witherspoon<\/a><\/strong>, who will look to take the next step after an encouraging rookie year. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillKW00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K&#8217;Waun Williams<\/a><\/strong> earned an extension for his 2017 play at nickel. According to the Football Outsiders Almanac, Williams&#8217; average yards allowed after the catch (1.9) was the third-fewest among corners with at least 40 targets. Depth is the problem for the Niners, who may well lean on the versatility of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WardJi01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmie Ward<\/a><\/strong> and rookie <strong>D.J. Reed<\/strong> with each able to play nickel and free safety. Ward has also played outside corner but preseason struggles may see the 49ers look to third-rounder <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/04\/12\/tarvarius-moore-2018-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tarvarius<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/Moorxx20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Moore<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona still boasts its own shutdown guy in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PetePa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Peterson<\/a><\/strong> but has only a bunch of question-marks beyond him. If that doesn&#8217;t happen then <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tre-flowers-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tre Flowers<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; conversion from safety to corner may come more keenly into focus. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JohnDo02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dontae Johnson<\/a><\/strong> came over from San Francisco in a signing that has to be questioned after his dismal 2017 campaign.<\/p>\n<h2>Safety<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best<\/strong>: Los Angeles Rams<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest<\/strong>: Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles&#8217; slew of talented corners is supported by one of the league&#8217;s better safety pairings. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoynLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lamarcus Joyner<\/a><\/strong> shifted from slot corner to free safety and proved a nightmare for opposing offenses. He had nine pass deflections and three interceptions in 2017. Strong safety <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnJo21,JohnJo22,JohnJo10&amp;search=John+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Johnson<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s 11 pass breakups were the fifth-most among safeties, which is quite an achievement considering he only took over the starting role in October.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinals are blessed with an extremely versatile young strong safety in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BakeBu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Budda Baker<\/a><\/strong>. He is rangy enough to play deep but is expected play more near the line of scrimmage in 2018. Free safety <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BethAn20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antoine Bethea<\/a><\/strong> had an unexpected 2017 renaissance with nine breakups and five pass deflections. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BostTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tre Boston<\/a><\/strong>, who had five picks last year, was signed to a one-year deal and could prove an astute capture. The 26-year-old will look to eat into Bethea&#8217;s snaps and earn a long-term contract.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco&#8217;s has huge amounts of safety potential. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ColbAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adrian Colbert<\/a><\/strong> started seven games following an injury to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/Wardxx20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Ward<\/a> and displayed remarkable range, physicality and a nose for the ball. He will start as the single-high while the box strong safety role will be occupied by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TartJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaquiski Tartt<\/a><\/strong>. Tartt&#8217;s play prior to a season-ending injury earned him an extension and led to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/ReidEr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Reid<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s exit. Ward and Reed&#8217;s versatility again comes into play here.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=ThomEa99,ThomEa00&amp;search=Earl+Thomas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Earl Thomas<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; holdout in Seattle continues and as long as he is away from the team, the Seahawks safeties look very vulnerable. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McDoBr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bradley McDougald<\/a><\/strong> is a solid replacement for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ChanKa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kam Chancellor<\/a><\/strong>, while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/ThomTe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tedric Thompson<\/a><\/strong> will need to step into Thomas&#8217; sizeable shoes should he not return. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HillDe02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delano Hill<\/a> <\/strong>backs him up at a position filled by unproven players for Seattle.<\/p>\n<h2>Special Teams<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best<\/strong>: Los Angeles Rams<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest<\/strong>: San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals<\/p>\n<p>Rams kicker <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/Z\/ZuerGr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Zuerlein<\/a><\/strong>, punter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HekkJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Hekker<\/a><\/strong>, returner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoopPh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pharoh Cooper<\/a><\/strong> and long snapper <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McQuJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake McQuaide<\/a><\/strong> all made the Pro Bowl in 2017. That speaks to the quality of the best special teams unit in the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>Zuerlein was the only reason 49ers kicker <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/gouldrob01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robbie Gould<\/a><\/strong> was not elected to the Pro Bowl. He missed only two field goals and was perfect from 50-plus yards. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PiniBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bradley Pinion<\/a><\/strong> has yet to justify the 2015 fifth-round pick spent on him. The Niners do, however, have a very strong kick and punt coverage unit. They will look to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/dante-pettis-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dante Pettis<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> D.J. Reed<\/strong> to improve the return game.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/janikseb01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sebastian Janikowski<\/a><\/strong> is the man selected to fix the Seahawks kicking game. Fifth-round pick and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GuyxRa20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Guy<\/a><\/strong> Award winner <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/michael-dickson-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Dickson<\/a><\/strong> should help them flip field position on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona&#8217;s special teams unit was again one of the worst in the NFL last year. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/dawsophi01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Dawson<\/a><\/strong> missed eight field goals and, though his fellow former 49er <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LeexAn20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Lee<\/a><\/strong> remains extremely reliable, the Cardinals finished 27th in net punting. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/christian-kirk-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Kirk<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tj-logan-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Logan<\/a><\/strong> will be relied on to add some spark to the return game.<\/p>\n<h2>Coaching<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best<\/strong>: Los Angeles Rams<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest<\/strong>: San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals<\/p>\n<p>The combination of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/sean-mcvay-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean McVay<\/a><\/strong> and Phillips is perhaps the best coaching pairing in the NFL. 49ers head coach <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=kyle-shanahan-2,kyle-shanahan-1&amp;search=Kyle+Shanahan&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Shanahan<\/a><\/strong> is still ahead of McVay in the realm of offensive minds in the eyes of many. However, Robert Saleh&#8217;s defense will need to make strides for the Niners to keep pace with the Rams.<\/p>\n<p>There is no doubting <strong>Pete Carroll<\/strong> knows how to motivate players, but the hiring of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/brian-schottenheimer-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Schottenheimer<\/a><\/strong> as Seahawks offensive coordinator is a puzzling one. Defensive coordinator <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NortKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Norton<\/a><\/strong> had little in the way of success in Oakland.<\/p>\n<p>New Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks is the only rookie coach in this division.
