Without further ado, the 2018 AFC East breakdown of the defensive, special teams, and coaching groups.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2018\/08\/30\/2018-afc-east-breakdown-by-position-offense\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2018 AFC East Breakdown: The Offense<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h1>2018 AFC East Breakdown by Position: Defense &amp; Special Teams<\/h1>\n<h2>Defensive Line<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/dolphins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Dolphins<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/patriots\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Patriots<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Jets<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Bills<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Dolphins lost\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SuhxNd99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ndamukong Suh<\/a><\/strong>, but they retained\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WakeCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Wake<\/a><\/strong>. Wake is going to be an anchor along that defensive front and is going to remain a nightmare for opposing offensive lines. The man has only had one season in his thirties without racking up double-digit sacks. Suh has been replaced by\u00a0<strong>Jordan<\/strong> <strong>Phillips<\/strong>, who has both undeniable talent and unenviable inconsistency.<\/p>\n<p>The Patriots are very close behind the Dolphins, if not tied for first. In the week two preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the rebuilt Patriots defensive line looked nearly unstoppable.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ClayAd00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adrian Clayborn<\/a><\/strong> may very well be seeing a resurgence in his career after a career highlight game with the Atlanta Falcons against the Dallas Cowboys last year.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShelDa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Shelton<\/a><\/strong> looks like he might live up to the first-round draft pick the Cleveland Browns used on him.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WiseDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deatrich Wise Jr.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has gained speed and muscle since last season, when he tied\u00a0<strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GarrMy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myles Garrett\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BarnDe01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Barnett\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>for most quarterback pressures among rookie defensive ends. And\u00a0<strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RiveDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Rivers\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>is finally healthy enough to get back on the field, and he has shown nothing but drive and solid leverage this preseason.<\/p>\n<p>Pro Football Focus ranks the Jets defensive line as the worst in the league headed into the 2018 season.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WillLe02,WillLe21&amp;search=Leonard+Williams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leonard Williams<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0could easily have a terrific year if only the other members of the line held up their ends of the deal.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AndeHe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henry Anderson<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McLeSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve McLendon<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/ShepNa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nathan Shepherd<\/a><\/strong> are all in the mix for the defensive line,\u00a0but that combination doesn&#8217;t exactly inspire confidence in the Jets defensive front.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MurpTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trent Murphy<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HughJe99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry Hughes<\/a><\/strong> are going to be huge along the defensive line for Buffalo, but\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LotuSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Star Lotulelei<\/a><\/strong> is not going to be the savior that Buffalo would like him to be. In five years, Lotuleilei has never hit the 25 pressures mark in a single season. There&#8217;s little reason to believe he&#8217;ll be anything but a body for the Bills defensive line this year. Still,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=WillKy20,WillKy01,WillKy00&amp;search=Kyle+Williams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Williams<\/a><\/strong> returns to the Buffalo defensive line (barring a nagging injury), and Williams is a force to be reckoned with.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LawsSh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaq Lawson<\/a><\/strong> will be entering his second year in Buffalo as a rotational counterpart to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlexLo99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lorenzo Alexander<\/a><\/strong>. Lawson is yet another player in the AFC East that hasn&#8217;t lived up to his draft position.<\/p>\n<h2>Linebacker<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best:\u00a0<\/strong>New England Patriots<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:\u00a0<\/strong>New York Jets\/Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HighDo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dont&#8217;a Hightower<\/a><\/strong> is a force, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HighDo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dont&#8217;a Hightower<\/a> is\u00a0<em>back<\/em>. The man can shut down a run game, he can make tackles like no one&#8217;s business, and he&#8217;s essentially unblockable in the A-gap. And let&#8217;s not overlook how well\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/V\/VanNKy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Van Noy<\/a><\/strong> did in Hightower&#8217;s absence last year. The Patriots linebacking corps is no slouch, even if it is lacking a little in depth. Rookie\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BentJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ja&#8217;Whaun Bentley<\/a><\/strong> gave hints in the Patriots second preseason game that he, too, might be a hefty contributor on defense.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FlowMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marquis Flowers<\/a><\/strong> also performed admirably on defense last year as injuries piled up around the defense, and his presence on the depth chart this year shouldn&#8217;t be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlexLo99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lorenzo Alexander<\/a><\/strong> is going to be the core of the linebacking corps in Buffalo, and rightly so. Although he declined a little bit in 2017, Alexander is a leader in that group and deserves to be the Bills highest-paid linebacker.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdmuTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tremaine Edmunds<\/a><\/strong> is an intriguing newcomer to the Bills group. Coming out of the 2018 NFL Draft, Edmunds is a prototype player with a fantastic career tape. And before anyone writes off Edmunds as too young to be worth much, head coach\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McDeSe20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean McDermott<\/a><\/strong> coached both\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KuecLu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke Kuechly<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviTh20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Davis<\/a><\/strong>, and look at what those guys have done.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JenkJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Jenkins<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillAv00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avery Williamson<\/a><\/strong> aren&#8217;t terrible players by many metrics and are the most likely starting linebackers in New York. Unfortunately for the Jets, Williamson is no\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviDe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Demario Davis<\/a><\/strong>, so there&#8217;s going to be expected drop-off there. Jenkins has established himself as a rather one-dimensional linebacker, able to stop runs but seriously lacking in the pass rush.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LeexDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darron Lee<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MartJo02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Martin<\/a><\/strong> ought to round out the top of the linebacker depth chart, which leaves something to be desired. Lee is facing a make-or-break year, as he has struggled in coverage during his first two years and will need to prove himself worthy of his first-round draft status.<\/p>\n<p>The Dolphins starting linebacker trio looks to be\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlonKi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kiko Alonso<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McMiRa02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raekwon McMillan<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AnthSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephone Anthony<\/a><\/strong>. Behind them, the Dolphins have\u00a0<strong>Jerome<\/strong> <strong>Baker<\/strong>. That&#8217;s an enviable group in the AFC East. Alonso is the clear star in that linebacking group, and the man plays like he doesn&#8217;t care if his career ends tomorrow. MacMillan is making a return after injury sidelined him for his rookie season, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamidolphins.com\/news\/2018-training-camp-preview-linebackers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all signs point to a full recovery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Cornerback<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best:<\/strong> Miami Dolphins<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:\u00a0<\/strong>Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, New England Patriots<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HowaXa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavien Howard<\/a><\/strong> showed flashes of brilliance in 2017, even snagging an interception from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradTo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Brady<\/a><\/strong> himself.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCaBo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby McCain<\/a><\/strong> has proven himself reliable in recent years, reliable enough for the Dolphins to sign him to a four-year extension. McCain is a lock to be the starting nickel corner, but there is less clarity opposite Howard this year.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LippTo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Lippett<\/a><\/strong>, the receiver turned cornerback, has the size and hands to be great as long as he can rebound from the Achilles injury that took him out of the 2017 season. The Dolphins also have\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TankCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cordrea Tankersley<\/a><\/strong> in the wings, but the young man out of Clemson will have to show significant improvement to see much time on the field as a starter.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WhitTr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TreDavious White<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviVo99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vontae Davis<\/a><\/strong> are not a pair to be trifled with. White was an early contender for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He tied the eventual DROY for the most passes defended by a rookie in 2017 with 18. He also notched a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and 53 tackles as a rookie. On the other side of the field, Davis had a rough 2017 season, resulting in his departure from the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/colts\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indianapolis Colts<\/a>. The 30-year-old cornerback will be entering 2018 with a serious chip on his shoulder, and that could prove to be the spark the two-time Pro Bowler needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=JohnTr05,JohnTr02&amp;search=Trumaine+Johnson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trumaine Johnson<\/a><\/strong> had one of his best career seasons last year with the <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/rams\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Rams<\/a>\u00a0with 14 passes defended, 57 total tackles, and a pair of picks. It wasn&#8217;t the magical 2015 season, but it wasn&#8217;t that far off. The Jets were smart to sign the veteran. The Jets also have\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ClaiMo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Morris Claiborne<\/a><\/strong> on the roster. Claiborne has talent but continually struggles to stay healthy. In six seasons, he&#8217;s never played a full 16 games. He&#8217;ll have to contend with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SkriBu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buster Skrine<\/a><\/strong> as the likely next man up. Although Skrine had a better 2017 than 2016, he hasn&#8217;t been able to produce quite like he did in <a href=\"http:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/browns\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Patriots have\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GilmSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephon Gilmore<\/a><\/strong> at cornerback and&#8230; a host of less-than-exciting options. When the team signed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCoJa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason McCourty<\/a><\/strong>, many expected that McCourty would be the lock option across the field from Gilmore. McCourty&#8217;s play hasn&#8217;t matched up to the hype yet, which means that\u00a0rookie\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DawsDu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duke Dawson<\/a><\/strong>, third-year player <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RoweEr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Rowe<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneJo03.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Jones<\/a><\/strong> may see decent time on the field this season. That&#8217;s too much instability for a team that had one of the worst secondaries in 2017.<\/p>\n<h2>Safety<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best:<\/strong>\u00a0Buffalo Bills<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:\u00a0<\/strong>New England Patriots, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins<\/p>\n<p>The Bills still have\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HydeMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micah Hyde<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PoyeJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Poyer<\/a><\/strong> as their starting safeties. Each snagged five interceptions last season, tying them for the third-most interceptions caught across the league. This one&#8217;s no contest.<\/p>\n<p>The Patriots safety group has been one of the more consistent groups in terms of personnel.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ChunPa99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Chung<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCoDe99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devin McCourty<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarmDu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duron Harmon<\/a><\/strong> are a fearsome trio. McCourty and Harmon have been exceptional leaders on and off the field, returning as co-captains. Chung had a career year in 2017 in terms of tackles and tied his career high in passes defended.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets safeties are young. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AdamJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamal Adams<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MayeMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Maye<\/a><\/strong> were drafted in 2017. Maye pulled down a pair of interceptions last season, and Adams ended the season with a pair of sacks. The Jets are confident in their young, athletic starters to improve upon their 2017 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FitzMi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minkah Fitzpatrick<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is the newest addition to the Dolphins defensive backfield. The rookie out of Alabama was an exceptional college player, and he is expected to perform well at the professional level.\u00a0The Dolphins existing starters,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McDoTJ00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. McDonald<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneRe99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reshad Jones<\/a><\/strong>, didn&#8217;t work together as well as head coach\u00a0<strong>Adam Gase<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/sports\/miami-dolphins\/fl-sp-dolphins-tj-mcdonald-20180327-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">would have wanted them to<\/a>, and one only has to watch how poorly the duo played against\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GronRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Gronkowski<\/a><\/strong> to see that. Fitzpatrick can be expected to make an appearance as a starter this season, but the Dolphins will have to fix the chemistry issues at the position if they expect to get much out of the group.<\/p>\n<h2>Special Teams<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best:\u00a0<\/strong>New England Patriots<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills<\/p>\n<p>New England kind of has it all in the special teams category.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GostSt20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Gostkowski<\/a><\/strong> is a long-time Patriot for a reason. Gostkowski is consistently one of the top kickers in the NFL and had a career second-best year in terms of made field goal percentage in 2017 with 92.5 percent. The Patriots return game has always been a wealth of riches (disregarding\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JoneCy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cyrus Jones<\/a><\/strong>), and the rich only got richer with the addition of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PattCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cordarrelle Patterson<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AlleRy01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Allen<\/a><\/strong> isn&#8217;t headed to the Pro Bowl any time soon for his punting, but he does a serviceable job week in and week out. New England ranked in the top three teams in terms of opponents kick return yardage and in the top four for opponents punt return yardage, thanks to a special teams unit led by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SlatMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Slater<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EbneNa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nate Ebner<\/a><\/strong> that remains largely intact.<\/p>\n<p>The Dolphins have a solid return man in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GranJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jakeem Grant<\/a><\/strong>, who averaged 22.8 yards per kick return last season, tied for seventh-best in the league.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HaacMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Haack<\/a><\/strong>, the Dolphins punter, tied with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HekkJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Hekker<\/a><\/strong> with 30 punts inside the opponents&#8217; 20-yard line, a top-ten worthy performance. The Dolphins kicking game is currently a question mark, coming down to rookies\u00a0<strong>Greg Joseph<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SandJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Sanders<\/a><\/strong>. The question mark at kicker raises some eyebrows about the Dolphins special teams unit, but Haack and Grant more than make up for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdwaLa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lac Edwards<\/a><\/strong> was a punting machine for the Jets last year, booting 94 times for 4,378 yards. His punt average of 46.6 yards was good for top ten in the league in 2017, and his booming 70-yarder was tied for third-longest. Edwards also punted inside the 20-yard line 33 times in 2017, good for third-best in the league. Unfortunately for the Jets,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CataCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chandler Catanzaro<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s 83.3 kick percentage puts them in the bottom half of the league. And, as a team, the Jets had an abysmal return game in 2017, ranking 23rd in the league, with few changes to the roster for 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HausSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Hauschka<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0did a serviceable job as the placekicker for the Buffalo Bills last year, but he appears to be on a bit of a decline, posting lower and lower made field goal percentages in his last two seasons.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TateBr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Tate<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>did an excellent job as a returner last year, placing in the top ten in the league for kick and punt return yards.\u00a0On the other side of the ball,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SchmCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colton Schmidt<\/a><\/strong> was in &#8220;meh&#8221; company with a mediocre 28 punts inside the opponents&#8217; 20-yard line.<\/p>\n<h2>Coaching<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Best:<\/strong> New England Patriots<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rest:\u00a0<\/strong>Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets<\/p>\n<p>There really is no contest here.\u00a0<strong>Bill Belichick<\/strong> will go down in history as one of the greatest coaches of all time, even if some will argue that there ought to be some asterisks next to his name. The Patriots offensive coordinator\u00a0<em>should<\/em> be a head coach in Indianapolis right now, which tells you everything you need to know about how good\u00a0<strong>Josh McDaniels<\/strong> is at his job. New England does not have an official defensive coordinator, but\u00a0<strong>Brian Flores<\/strong>, who will be leading the defense, was also in talks to become the next head coach in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McDeSe20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean McDermott<\/a><\/strong> led the Bills to their first playoff berth in a very long time. Granted, it wasn&#8217;t pretty, and they came out with a flat, mediocre divisional record, but McDermott did it. The Bills also added\u00a0<strong>Brian Daboll<\/strong> as the new offensive coordinator. Daboll is of championship caliber, having served under Belichick during the Patriots Super Bowl LI victory and under Nick Saban as offensive coordinator during the Crimson Tide&#8217;s 2017 National Championship victory. And let&#8217;s not forget defensive coordinator\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FrazLe20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leslie Frazier<\/a><\/strong>, whose 2017 defense allowed the second-fewest touchdowns in the league in a division where they had to play NFL MVP\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradTo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Brady<\/a> twice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Gase<\/strong> had an above-average first season with the Dolphins in 2016, bringing them to the playoffs with a 10-6 record. But he faltered in his second season without\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TannRy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Tannehill<\/a><\/strong> to control the offense and wound up with a lousy 6-10 record. This will have to be a bounce-back season for Gase if he hopes to continue competing with Belichick and Co.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BowlTo20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Bowles<\/a><\/strong> is more maligned than he should be, but he still turned <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McCoJo01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh McCown<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s career season into a measly five wins.\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Bates<\/strong> has been promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2018 season after serving as the Jets\u00a0quarterbacks coach for the 2017 season. In other words, the man responsible for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PettBr01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryce Petty<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HackCh01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Hackenberg<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s development last year is now running the offense for the Jets. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RodgKa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kacy Rodgers<\/a><\/strong> has stayed on as the Jets defensive coordinator, coming into his fourth season in the position.
