Every year we see a few guys that ride the fantasy football 2018 hype-train then their average draft position (ADP) gets inflated. Sometimes, these players live up to the hype. Other times, the hype ends up being exactly that; just hype. A few notable candidates\u00a0from last season are\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CarrDe02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Carr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CrowIs00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Crowell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PryoTe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terrelle Pryor<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McFaDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darren McFadden<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>Those players are examples of passengers on the Hype-Train that derailed.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we&#8217;re going to identify some early passengers on the Hype-Train and the conditions surrounding their boarding. We will also assess whether or not they belong on that train, or if they should be steered clear of come draft day.<\/p>\n<h1>Fantasy Football 2018 Hype-Train: Whistle Stop One<\/h1>\n<h3>Andrew Luck &#8211; QB &#8211; Indianapolis Colts<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LuckAn00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Luck<\/a><\/strong> is an early prediction for the Hype-Train. News just broke yesterday that he was throwing footballs at practice. Granted, they were college sized footballs, but in his meeting with the press afterward, his excitement was very real.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Luck on if he\u2019ll be ready for Week 1: \u201cAbsolutely. No knock on wood. I believe it in my bones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kevin Bowen (@KBowen1070) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KBowen1070\/status\/1006621311244881921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 12, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>So while this report is very new and the news has yet to affect to his ADP, it&#8217;s all but certain that with no setbacks, Luck&#8217;s value is going to skyrocket which in turn will boost the value of his receiving core. It is well worth potential fantasy owners keeping an eye on his progress.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Hogan &#8211; WR &#8211; New England Patriots <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EdelJu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julian Edelman<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2018\/06\/07\/julian-edelman-facing-four-game-suspension\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> made headlines<\/a> last week with a PED suspension to start the 2018 season. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HogaCh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Hogan<\/a><\/strong> immediately boarded the hype train. His ADP jumped and he is currently listed as the 30th wide receiver off the board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hogan had a solid season shaping up until an injury occurred. In six of the nine games he played, he had 60 or more yards. He had five or more targets in eight of those nine games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The downside is that the New England Patriots are deep at the wide receiver position. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GronRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Gronkowski<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MitcMa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malcolm Mitchell<\/a>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DorsPh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phillip Dorsett<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are all still there, and they\u2019ve added <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MattJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Matthews<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PattCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cordarrelle Patterson<\/a>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BritKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Britt<\/a>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That list does not include the running back core, all of which are capable receivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of now, Edelman is only serving a four-game suspension and will re-join as one of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradTo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Brady<\/a>\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> favored targets. What this means for fantasy owners, is whoever is the recipient of the uptick in targets through the first four weeks could immediately fade back into the committee upon Edelman\u2019s return. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Gordon &#8211; WR &#8211; Cleveland Browns <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GordJo02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Gordon<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a hype list almost seems redundant at this point. There is no doubt that the young man is an athletic specimen. There is statistical proof that he is capable of not just being a WR1, but being<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the WR1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for fantasy football. However, the last time he was the WR1 was the 2013 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since that 2013 season, Gordon has only played in 10 games. In those 10 games, he has compiled 638 yards and one touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gordon has a new quarterback, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TaylTy00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyrod Taylor<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has never thrown for more than 3,035 yards or 20 touchdowns. The other option is rookie <\/span><b>Baker Mayfield. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gordon also is on a roster that is filling up with talent at the receiving position. He will be battling third-year receiver <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ColeCo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Coleman<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and target-monster <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LandJa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarvis Landry<\/a>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taylor is also rather fond of targeting his tight end. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/N\/NjokDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Njoku<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is very athletic and may compliment Taylor\u2019s affinity for the position. There is also expert scat-back <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/J\/JohnDu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duke Johnson<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who\u2019s role seems secure to garner his share of targets. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line, Gordon\u2019s current ADP is 3.07 which is very high for a receiver that has missed more games than he\u2019s played over his five-year career. Especially when one factors in how crowded the receiving options for a quarterback that doesn\u2019t maintain a high-volume passing attack. His current ADP reflects almost strictly upside and is, therefore, a risky selection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerick McKinnon &#8211; RB &#8211; San Francisco 49ers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McKiJe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerick McKinnon<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be the player that was the first to board the 2018 Hype Train. He boarded early, during the free-agency frenzy. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HydeCa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlos Hyde<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">departed for Cleveland and the 49ers snatched up McKinnon quickly to be their lead back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinnon has succeeded for fantasy owners primarily as a third-down specialist or pass-catcher out of the backfield. He can be electric if targeted in open space but does show some struggles between the tackles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is interesting is that this is not McKinnon\u2019s first crack at the lead back. He had the shot when <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=PeteAd01,PeteAd00&amp;search=Adrian+Peterson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adrian Peterson<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was out for the Minnesota Vikings and lost the job to <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/A\/AsiaMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Asiata<\/a>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then again when <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CookDa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dalvin Cook<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went down to injury, and he lost the lead back role to <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MurrLa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Latavius Murray<\/a>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One could speculate that it was the Vikings coaching that didn\u2019t want to overload the young back, or they saw something that made them leery of him in that role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinnon finished 2017 as the RB 20 last season. He had a combined 991 yards from scrimmage, and five touchdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The encouraging difference is that the 49ers paid up to get him. The depth chart favors him as the clear-cut lead back with pass-catching upside.
