Upon the start of the off-season, they began calculating ways to strengthen the team, including trimming the roster to make way for more coveted talent. Prior to the draft, Big Blue released corner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RodgDo99.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/giants\/index.ssf\/2018\/03\/giants_to_move_dominique_rodgers-cromartie_to_safe.html#incart_river_index\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whom they reportedly had asked to switch positions and take a pay cut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, punter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WingBr00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Brad Wing<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and wide receiver <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrDw00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dwayne Harris<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose season was shortened due to injury. Defensive end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PierJa99.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jason Pierre-Paul<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was traded to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/buccaneers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampa Bay Buccaneers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after eight years with the team in reaction to their decision to change schemes from 4-3 to 3-4. Offensive guard\/tackle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PughJu00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Justin Pugh<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has decided to move on and will continue his career with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/cardinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona Cardinals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These fallen soldiers are just a few of many, but come in the midst of several noteworthy gains, such as corner<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WillTe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Teddy Williams<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (formerly of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carolina Panthers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), left tackle <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SoldNa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nate Solder<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (stolen from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/patriots\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New England Patriots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/StewJo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jonathan Stewart<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also a former Panther, and the leading rusher in their history). In their first draft under their new general manager <\/span><b>Dave Gettleman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Giants continued to strengthen their roster, reportedly considering pick trades but ultimately holding to their assigned order for the entirety of the weekend. McIntosh<\/b><\/a>, defensive tackle, Miami<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><strong>New York Giants 2018 NFL Draft Review<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best Player: Saquon Barkley<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most debated picks in the league was the second overall, as rumors flew over what the Giants would ultimately do, considering their needs. Trade rumors flew, as did opinions over the most worthy selection should the pick be kept. Nevertheless (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/2018\/04\/16\/saquon-barkley-worth-investment-giants\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and predictably<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the result was the acquisition of Penn State\u2019s prized running back Saquon Barkley, who is predicted to be the franchise player at the position that the Giants have been missing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scouts and managers of the organization sat in fear on Thursday night as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/browns\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Browns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made their first overall selection, which could have dramatically affected the course of Big Blue\u2019s very sensibly planned draft. The most intriguing running back to enter the game since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PeteAd01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Adrian Peterson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2007 (if not long before), Barkley was all the talk leading up to round one. In the three years past, there has been a trend in top ten-picked running backs (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GurlTo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Todd Gurley<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/ElliEz00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ezekiel Elliott<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FourLe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Leonard Fournette<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) ultimately being clutch possessions for their respective teams. The Giants can expect to see a similar star performance from their new rookie, as they attempt greatness once again. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Head-Scratcher: R.J. McIntosh<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most curious selection of the Giants draft was their final one, in the form of defensive tackle R.J. McIntosh. Nothing against McIntosh as a player&#8211;his film from his three years at Miami proves him quick and athletic. It\u2019s possible that he appeared on the Giants\u2019 radar during their screening of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/quenton-nelson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Quenton Nelson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as he is one of the very few defensive linemen to give Notre Dame\u2019s weapon of mass destruction any serious trouble. The puzzler is that he seems slightly unnecessary in an otherwise very well-constructed and need-oriented draft. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By selecting McIntosh, Big Blue doubled down on rookie defensive tackles, having already picked up B.J. Hill in round three. And while McIntosh could fit the Giants new defensive scheme well as a one-gapping five-technique or a pass rushing three-technique in nickels, the team already has four potential options for those roles in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WynnKe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kerry Wynn<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/O\/OkwaRo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Romeo Okwara<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MartKa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kareem Martin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MaurJo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Josh Mauro<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With several players in positions of higher need still on the board, we now have to question the back office\u2019s intentions with these four other players. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Surprise: Kyle Lauletta<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the selection of Barkley at pick two, it seems we were all too quick to assume that the G-men would not be declaring Manning&#8217;s successor&#8211;at least not in the form of a rookie. Had the Giants successfully conducted any trades in the course of round one, they might have been able to snag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/lamar-jackson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Lamar Jackson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> late in the night. Alas, they surprised us all in the fourth round with the selection of Kyle Lauletta at pick 108. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before delving into the logistics of their selection, it\u2019s important to note that many successful players with long and luxurious careers have been drafted in these later picks&#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BrowAn04.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Antonio Brown<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for one, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AB84\/status\/990236228426625024\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reminded us of his late selection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over Twitter and stood in solidarity with the anxious remaining players on Saturday. Heck, the GOAT himself&#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BradTo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tom Brady<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;was selected 199th overall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many positive things to say about Lauletta, Richmond\u2019s fifth-year senior and a three-year starter. He certainly has the experience and adaptability that are necessary qualities of a New York Giant in their refurbishing period. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauletta led his team throughout multiple head coaching changes during his time at Richmond. Physically, he can play well from under center, hurting defenses with his legs if need be. His lower body mechanics provide the threshold to his velocity, as he is slightly lacking in arm strength. Still, he has high accuracy and anticipation, which provide him with the tools necessary to execute the vast majority of an NFL playbook without too much difficulty. He may not have been the most conventional choice, but at least <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/04\/05\/davis-webb-2017-nfl-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Davis Webb<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a partner with whom he can work on his lower body, just as Lauletta will undoubtedly take a lot from Webb in developing his above-belt strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Steal: Will Hernandez<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly after this past 0-12 season, it would have been easy for a player like Will Hernandez to have thrown in the towel instead of declaring for the draft. But that attitude isn\u2019t what kept the beast in prowl mode through this past year. It had been suggested that the Giants use their second overall pick to acquire an additional weapon to cover <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MannEl00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Eli Manning<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whom the Giants have indicated will remain their starter for this season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite UTEP\u2019s bad season, the fact that Hernandez was still on the board at 34th overall is shocking. At 6\u20192\u201d and 327 pounds, and having started all 49 games in the past four years, he is the experienced and resilient protector that the Giants needed out of this draft. Despite his history at left guard, head coach <\/span><b>Pat Shurmur <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.giants.com\/news-and-blogs\/article-1\/Giants-continue-to-bolster-O-Line-with-Will-Hernandez-\/c91102d8-00bd-4200-a890-a7a21ccb38be\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has expressed his intentions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of playing Hernandez at both sides to find his best fit. NFL Network analyst <strong>Lance Zeirlein<\/strong>&#8216;s draft profile <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/will-hernandez?id=32462018-0002-5598-2873-8029092a1ebf\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">describes him as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201crare combination of power, balance, and athletic ability.\u201d His passion for the game is palpable both on and off the field. And as far as protecting Eli, he knows he\u2019s the man for the job: \u201cI\u2019ve got him. I\u2019ve got him 100 percent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Likely To Turn Heads In Training Camp: Lorenzo Carter<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the 66th selection, Shurmur came clean about the organization\u2019s attempt to trade up to acquire linebacker, Lorenzo Carter. Luckily enough, they didn\u2019t have to. In his\u00a0career at Georgia, Carter was an elite outside edge pass rusher, always managing to create pressure, and provide a unique amount of support on special teams plays. Gettleman and Shurmur\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.giants.com\/news-and-blogs\/article-1\/Coach-Pat-Shurmur-ready-for-new-challenges\/93675714-e90b-463b-836d-f342939be037\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three principles for winning a football game are<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to \u201crun the ball,\u201d \u201cstop the run,\u201d and to \u201crush the passer.\u201d Bingo. Carter is their guy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he lacks the necessary bulk of a starter, his intensity and confidence in his final year of college tell of a player who will put in the work. And if there\u2019s any team that is in the position to push him to high levels of greatness, it\u2019s the New York Football Giants. After helping the \u2018Dawgs to a jaw-dropping National Championship appearance this year, Carter is confident in his abilities. \u201cI feel like I can fit into a lot of systems, especially being at Georgia, doing the things I did\u2026 I\u2019m comfortable in any defense.\u201d Since the G-men will be making a transition to Carter\u2019s historically-played 3-4 base defense, his \u201ccomfort\u201d is pretty much guaranteed, and we will surely see impressive leadership in that formation during his time at training camp.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rest: B.J. Hill<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B.J. Hill will join the lineup alongside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HarrDa03.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Damon Harrison<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and last year\u2019s second-round selection <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/T\/TomlDa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dalvin Tomlinson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 in addition to sixth-rounder R.J. McIntosh. \u201cIdeally, there will be a rotation there, so they\u2019ll roll through it,\u201d said Shurmur after the selection of Hill with the 69th pick in the third round. The defensive tackle hails from N.C. State, where he played four productive years. He has a good frame for the position, making him tough to block and good against the run, and a high-revving motor that shows his surprising athleticism. While he is a constant producer, <\/span><b>James Bettcher <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and his assistants on the defensive coaching staff will have to work with Hill on his inconsistency finishing plays to make him a truly dominant rotational player for Big Blue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom Line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s Giants draft was inarguably the best we\u2019ve seen from the organization in a LONG time, and possibly the best work we saw from any of the 32 NFL organizations this year. The new staff clearly is moving the team back into championship direction already. There were several positions undrafted, which helps us examine what the team\u2019s intentions are and where there might still be a concern. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can expect to see even more this season from tight end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/EngrEv00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Evan Engram<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was selected in the first round of last year\u2019s draft and had high production as a rookie, despite an injury-ridden and mismanaged team and coaching staff. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/E\/ElliRh00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rhett Ellison<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely have a bigger role as well, as he was a favorite of Shurmur\u2019s from their time together with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/vikings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Minnesota Vikings<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There is concern over the depth in the secondary still, despite the gain of Williams, and it will be wise for the Giants to take stock of their undrafted free agent options now that the draft period is through.
