That year, he also impressed on both sides of the ball for Woodbury High in New Jersey, posting five interceptions and 12 pass breakups in addition to rushing for 15 touchdowns and passing for 14. But it was his defensive work that attracted the attention of top collegiate programs. Though not the most highly touted corner prospect, he still received offers from plenty of Power Five schools including Alabama. He comprised a loaded 2013 class for the Crimson Tide which was ranked number one by many recruiting outlets.

As is often the case at Bama considering their depth at so many positions, playing time was hard to come by early on. Averett redshirted in 2013 and saw action in just a single game the following year. He then dealt with a variety of nagging injuries as a redshirt sophomore which limited him to special teams duty in the six games he appeared in. But things changed for the better in 2016. He saw action in all 15 games and led the team with eight pass breakups in addition to tallying one sack, two forced fumbles and three tackles for loss. He was the mark of consistency as a fifth-year senior, matching his sack and pass breakup totals from a year earlier while also registering his first career interception. Averett started a combined 28 games during his final two years in a Crimson Tide uniform.

Strengths

track and field background shows with his blazing speed and initial quickness;

has good hand-eye coordination and is quick to track the ball in the air;

loose hips and fairly fluid footwork enables him to mirror and match receivers;

uses plus closing speed to plant and drive on the ball and bat it down;

quick to react and contain in run support;

capable wrap-up tackler in the open field;

takes good angles into the backfield when brought in on corner blitzes;

special teams experience on kick coverage and returns.

Weaknesses

short arms may inhibit him against lengthy receivers;

lets receivers release from press coverage too easily;

a bit inconsistent in backpedal when mirroring in press;

susceptible to biting on double moves;

too inclined to break up passes rather than trying to force a turnover;

just a single interception in college and left quite a few on the field;

benefited from a Bama pass rush that doesn’t give opposing quarterbacks much time to find receivers;

play strength deficiencies show up when getting blocked downfield.

NFL Comparison: Ronald Darby

Teams With Need at Position: Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins

Projection: Late second to early third round

Bottom Line

It’s hard to beat the level of success Averett had as a starter. His Crimson Tide team played for a national title in both years he saw starting level reps, winning it all in 2017. Head coach Nick Saban‘s specialty is the secondary and it certainly showed last year with Averett one of five Bama corners/safeties who might find their way onto NFL teams via the 2018 draft. In his case, Averett brings plus top-end speed and reactive athleticism along with the ability to mirror and match receivers down the sidelines. He has all the makings of a capable boundary corner at the next level. But becoming a regular starter is contingent on him adding more play strength while improving his ability to jam receivers off their routes at the line of scrimmage.

Embed from Getty Images

Anthony Averett had to wait his turn to become a regular contributor in Alabama’s crowded secondary.
