During that time, he grabbed nine interceptions – six of them in his rookie year. He also had 65 tackles in 2015, which remains a career high for him (despite having no interceptions that year).

Hayward was eventually signed by the Chargers (then still in San Diego) in 2016 and immediately started paying dividends for them. Despite the team’s struggles that year, he led the league in interceptions with seven including one returned for a touchdown. He was named to his first Pro Bowl that season and racked up a Second-Team All-Pro achievement as well.

His 2017 season was just as good. He led a Chargers pass defense that ended up being third best in the league. Pro Football Focus gave him a grade of 96.4, which was best in the league among all qualifying cornerbacks. He has also not missed a single game since coming to Los Angeles. In his career overall, Hayward has racked up 266 tackles, 77 pass deflections, and 20 interceptions (11 of them in the last two seasons alone).

This is a big move for the Chargers, who are clearly trying to keep the good thing they have going with their secondary. Keeping Hayward there will give them a good chance to have a repeat performance as a top ten pass defense team. Hayward has quietly established himself as one of the better cornerbacks in the league over the last two years. With him remaining a Charger, the team looks to remain the beneficiary of his strong play.

Embed from Getty Images

Cornerback Casey Hayward has signed a three-year extension worth $36 million with the Los Angeles Chargers.
