His knee cooperated for only five games. While he attempted to play through the injury in previous games, his knee swelled up before their sixth game of the season. Shortly thereafter an MRI revealed that Mewhort’s knee required surgery. So, for the second time in his career, the Indianapolis Colts placed Mewhort on injured reserve. Obviously, that wasn’t how Mewhort expected his season to go. He was in the last year of his rookie deal, and his past success had put him in a position to cash in.

Mewhort’s 2016 season did not exactly fall into the completely successful category either. If anything, it was more of a mixed bag. After six games at left guard, PFF scored him as the ninth highest graded guard in the NFL. Which, of course, was the highlight of his season. After that, a tricep injury bogged down Mewhort. The injury led to him missing three games, and his return to the starting lineup was a brief one. In week 14, Mewhort suffered a torn ACL that ended his season. The Colts promptly placed the guard on injured reserve the following day. All in all, Mewhort was only able to play 10 games in 2016. In that time, he yielded zero sacks and committed three penalties for a total of 20 yards.

In 2015, Mewhort put in a full season for the Colts. While the 2015 season was his healthiest one, it was coincidentally his best season as well. In 16 games Mewhort did not yield a single sack. He committed only committed three penalties the whole season, all of which were false starts. PFF gave him a grade of 85.5, which was the ninth highest grade for a guard that season.

The 2015 season is exactly what the Colts were hoping to get from Mewhort when they drafted the Ohio State Buckeye in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Embed from Getty Images

Injuries have hampered Jack Mewhort over the past two seasons.
