The New York Giants<\/a> have a new linebacker. Multiple sources have confirmed that the Los Angeles Rams<\/a> are sending Alec Ogletree<\/a><\/strong> and their 2019 seventh-round pick to the Giants for a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2018 sixth-round pick.<\/p>\n

Adam Schefter broke the news earlier today:<\/p>\n

Compensation update: Giants are trading their fourth-round pick and their sixth-round pick in return for LB Alec Ogletree and the Rams’ 2019 seventh-round pick, per source.<\/p>\n

Ogletree had spent his entire career with the Rams up to this point. He compiled 507 combined tackles<\/a> and 5.5 sacks. He made his name as one of the best coverage linebackers in the league, accumulating two touchdowns off of six interceptions and 43 passes defensed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last year, he had one of his best seasons yet under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Ogletree racked up 95 combined tackles<\/a>, two sacks, 10 passes defensed, and a pick six. He was one of the leaders on the defense, and was voted as a captain the past two seasons.<\/p>\n

Ogletree was drafted as the 30th<\/sup> overall pick<\/a> of the first round in the 2013 draft. He played his college career for the Georgia Bulldogs. He started at free safety his freshman year, but moved to inside linebacker as a sophomore.<\/p>\n

There were some character concerns about him coming into the NFL\u00a0since he missed four college games in 2012<\/a> for violating team rules. These did not carry over into his professional career, as he has been a model of consistency.<\/p>\n

The move is somewhat surprising, considering the Rams just signed him to a huge extension this past October. They gave him $42 million, with $31.4 million guaranteed over four years<\/a>. Now the Giants will take on that hefty contract.<\/p>\n

Only time will tell what the Rams will do to replace such a key piece of their defense.<\/p>\n
