The firing came following a season in which hopes were high for a playoff run, especially as division rival <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/packers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Bay Packers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/vikings\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Vikings<\/a> were decimated with injuries. The record, however, left the Lions at seventh in the NFC and on the outside looking in at the playoffs, leading general manager <strong>Bob Quinn<\/strong> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/lions\/2018\/01\/01\/detroit-lions-jim-caldwell-fired\/992291001\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relieve Caldwell of his duties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the morning after the season finale. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Detroit Lions Hire Matt Patricia as Head Coach<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patricia has been a part of the New England Patriots staff since being hired by head coach <strong>Bill Belichick<\/strong> in 2004. He\u2019s seen both sides of the ball, having coached the offensive line, tight ends, linebackers, and safeties in the time since. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2012 Patricia was named the Patriots defensive coordinator, although he had been calling plays on defense since the departure of defensive coordinator <strong>Dean Pees<\/strong> three years prior. Patricia\u2019s defenses have finished in the top 10 in scoring defense every year in the six years since his appointment, and eight out of the nine years since he began calling plays. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patricia was reportedly the frontrunner for both the Lions and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/giants\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Giants<\/a> head coaching jobs, the latter of which has since hired former Vikings offensive coordinator <strong>Pat Shurmur<\/strong> for the position. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Patricia\u2019s Hire Not a Secret<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hire comes as no surprise, as many have linked Quinn to Patricia since the former was named the Lions general manager in 2016. Quinn had spent 16 years with the Patriots before coming to Detroit, his last four as their director of pro scouting. Upon being hired, Quinn dubbed both Patricia and Patriots offensive coordinator <strong>Josh McDaniels<\/strong> as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/nfl\/detroit-lions\/Board\/103102\/Contents\/Lions-GM-Bob-Quinn-Josh-McDaniels-Matt-Patricia-are-ready-to-b-71806045\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cready and willing to be head coaches,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in addition to saying he had good relationships with both. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patricia has reportedly had the job for several weeks now, but the two sides could not formally announce an agreement until the Patriots\u2019 season was officially over, per NFL rules. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patricia has acknowledged the matter himself, as MLive\u2019s Kyle Meinke reported Tuesday that as he began his Super Bowl media session, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kmeinke\/status\/958827614327668736\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patricia jokingly\u00a0asked \u201cYou guys got a lot of Philadelphia Eagles questions, right?\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0He was referring to the influx of questions surrounding the Lions head coaching position. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Patricia Moving Fast<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new head coach has reportedly already made significant changes to the staff. Prior to last week, the entirety of Caldwell\u2019s staff was still under contract with the exception of defensive coordinator <strong>Teryl Austin<\/strong>, now in the same role with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/bengals\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cincinnati Bengals<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per the Detroit News\u2019 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=RogeJu00,RogeJu99&amp;search=Justin+Rogers&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Rogers<\/a><\/strong>, Patricia <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Justin_Rogers\/status\/956603524816752641\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">informed a number of assistants last week that they would not be retained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including quarterbacks coach <strong>Brian Callahan<\/strong>, defensive line coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/K\/KocuKr20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kris Kocurek<\/a><\/strong>, linebackers coach <strong>Bill Sheridan<\/strong>, and defensive backs coaches <strong>Tony Oden<\/strong> and <strong>Alan Williams.<\/strong> Many have found work already, with Callahan going to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/raiders\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oakland Raiders<\/a> and Oden &amp; Kocurek joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/dolphins\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Dolphins<\/a> staff, all in the same roles they had while with the Lions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite not being formally hired yet, Patricia has already begun assembling his staff for the upcoming season. Reports have surfaced that Patricia has called on <strong>George Godsey<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaviJe20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Davidson<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong>Brian Stewart<\/strong> for the roles of quarterbacks, offensive line, and defensive backs coaches, respectively. NFL Network\u2019s <strong>Ian Rapoport<\/strong> was among many who reported that former Syracuse head coach and current Boston College defensive line coach <strong>Paul Pasqualoni <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RapSheet\/status\/956593715694456833\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a favorite for the defensive coordinator job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of Sunday, ESPN\u2019s <strong>Adam Schefter<\/strong> reported that offensive coordinator <strong>Jim Bob Cooter<\/strong>, who <strong>Matt Stafford<\/strong> rallied behind following Caldwell\u2019s firing, will remain on Patricia\u2019s staff in the same role.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Bob Quinn\u2019s Hire<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patricia\u2019s hiring will be the signature of Quinn\u2019s tenure as Lions general manager, as Quinn is finally bringing in \u2018his guy.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only time will tell if Patricia is the right hire, but one thing is for sure: as with any general manager bringing in \u2018his guy,\u2019 how Patricia does will shape Quinn\u2019s future with the Lions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"IN9stMQdSERgno5H8g19hg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/843911180\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'IN9stMQdSERgno5H8g19hg',sig:'KGJIQA8VUjpxkwe5_wc-Dju8NLgk9fYi05bVFIjg4SM=',w:'594px',h:'398px',items:'843911180',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Detroit Lions have hired Matt Patricia as their head coach going into the 2018 season, the team announced in a press release Monday afternoon.
