{"id":37354,"date":"2018-01-31T15:36:16","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T20:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=37354"},"modified":"2021-05-30T19:05:45","modified_gmt":"2021-05-30T23:05:45","slug":"los-angeles-rams-kansas-city-chiefs-mexico-city-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2018\/01\/31\/los-angeles-rams-kansas-city-chiefs-mexico-city-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs to Play in Mexico City in 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NFL&#8217;s annual regular season game in Mexico City is set for 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner <strong>Roger Goodell<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/story\/0ap3000000912789\/article\/chiefsrams-to-play-in-mexico-city-next-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced on Wednesday<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/rams\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Rams<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/chiefs\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas City Chiefs<\/a> will play at Estadio Azteca next season. The actual date and time will be determined when the league releases the 2018 schedule in April.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the past two seasons, we have seen the extraordinary passion that exists for NFL football in Mexico,&#8221; Goodell said during his annual state of the league address. &#8220;We are excited for another memorable event at Estadio Azteca as the\u00a0Los Angeles Rams\u00a0and\u00a0Kansas City Chiefs\u00a0head to Mexico City in 2018.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Los Angeles Rams will host the Kansas City Chiefs at Estadio Azteca in the 2018 season.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamSchefter\/status\/958781729178873856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 31, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs to Play in Mexico City in 2018<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Next season&#8217;s matchup will mark the third straight year the league has played a regular season game south of the border. It follows last season&#8217;s contest between the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/raiders\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oakland Raiders<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/patriots\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Patriots<\/a> as well as the Raiders&#8217; Monday Night Football clash\u00a0with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/texans\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Houston Texans<\/a>\u00a0in 2016. The Rams will be designated as hosts for next year&#8217;s game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Southern California and Mexico share strong historic and cultural ties and this game will provide an opportunity to celebrate the special connection between these two regions,&#8221;\u00a0Rams\u00a0owner <strong>Stanley Kroenke<\/strong>\u00a0stated. &#8220;It is great to be participating in the NFL&#8217;s international games again and working with the league to grow the game abroad. Mexico has one of the largest NFL fanbases in the world and we are excited to bring\u00a0Rams\u00a0football to the millions of fans there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The NFL&#8217;s partnership with Mexico will continue beyond next season. In November, the league and Mexico&#8217;s Ministry of Tourism announced a three-year agreement to host regular season games through 2021. It&#8217;s part and parcel of the NFL&#8217;s growing international presence that includes games in London. In addition to the game in Mexico, three are in the works for the U.K. next year.<\/p>\n<p>The Chiefs, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/01\/30\/kansas-city-trades-alex-smith-to-the-washington-redskins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the news for the deal<\/a> that sent quarterback <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=SmitAl03,SmitAl02&amp;search=Alex+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Smith<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/redskins\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Redskins<\/a>, have played in Mexico before. They took part in a preseason game in Monterrey, Mexico back in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to be a part of the NFL&#8217;s international initiatives once again, and we are excited to face the\u00a0Rams\u00a0at historic Estadio Azteca this fall,&#8221; Chiefs owner <strong>Clark Hunt<\/strong> said. &#8220;The support for the NFL in Mexico has grown significantly since our initial trip in 1996.
