The subject was brought to the forefront of the league in the late 2000\u2019s when <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/giants\/index.ssf\/2013\/11\/ex-giant_leonard_marshall_diagnosed_with_signs_of_cte_id_like_nfl_to_admit_they_were_guilty.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ex-Giants star <\/span><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MarsLe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leonard Marshall<\/a><\/strong> headed a negligence lawsuit<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on behalf of over 4,500 former players against the National Football League that resulted in a $785 million settlement, later amended to over $1 billion. The drama only intensified when in 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/steelers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Steeler<\/a>s all-pro safety <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/P\/PolaTr99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Troy Polamalu<\/a><\/strong> publicly stated that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/8177905\/troy-polamalu-pittsburgh-steelers-admits-lied-concussions\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he has lied to trainers about the frequency and severity of his concussions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This clamor, coupled with with further exposure from media such as Marshall\u2019s documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States of Football<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2012) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SmitWi99.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Smith<\/a>\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concussion <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2015), have continued to put NFL commissioner <strong>Roger Goodell<\/strong> and the National Football League in the spotlight regarding their efforts &#8212; or lack thereof &#8212; concerning player safety. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1>The NFL\u2019s Concussion Public Relations Problem<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial lawsuit didn\u2019t shine a positive light on the NFL, as they were raucously accused of covering up knowledge of the long-term dangers of professional football. The haste with which the league tried to come to a settlement, however, only amplified the effort on their part not to damage their image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The league took additional measures as the stigma of playing football grew, airing ads the last few seasons trying to combat the increasingly negative associations. In 2015, for example, the league aired a commercial in which moms advocated for their kids playing football, citing increased safety and even labeling it \u201cmom approved.\u201d Their efforts, however, may have been too little, too late. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent events have not done the NFL any favors either. Despite the NFL\u2019s policy requiring potentially concussed players to get clearance from an independent neurologist to return to play, players such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WilsRu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russell Wilson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SavaTo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Savage<\/a><\/strong> have been the subjects of controversial rulings that have fans, players, and parents alike questioning its legitimacy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In week 14, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/seahawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle Seahawks<\/a> quarterback Wilson suffered a hit that left him shaken up, prompting referee <strong>Walt Anderson<\/strong> to send him to the sideline for a checkup. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/2017\/12\/21\/16638572\/russell-wilson-seattle-seahawks-concussion-protocol\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilson, however, was in and out of the medical tent within moments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generating uproar on social media regarding the NFL\u2019s concussion policy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only four weeks later, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/texans\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Texans<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/2017\/12\/10\/16758748\/tom-savage-injury-49ers-texans-t-j-yates\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> quarterback Savage sustained a similar hit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that left him on the ground. He appeared to have what many suspected to be a seizure following the hit, yet Savage returned to play the entire next series prior to being taken out of the game. The blunder added fuel to the dumpster fire that is the NFL\u2019s image, with people once again <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pftcommenter\/status\/939945215762358272?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking to social media to ridicule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the concussion protocol. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NFL\u2019s initial unwillingness to be upfront about what they knew regarding head trauma and football has seemingly become a recurring issue. Between lawsuits and documentaries such as Marshall\u2019s that have defamed the NFL, the league\u2019s image has been set in stone as deceptive and misleading. As a result, their repeated blunders when it comes to player safety are drawing increasing scrutiny and have left them with little to no defense.
