{"id":31607,"date":"2017-10-04T21:22:03","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T01:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonnfl.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=31607"},"modified":"2017-10-04T21:22:03","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T01:22:03","slug":"denver-broncos-defense-a-championship-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2017\/10\/04\/denver-broncos-defense-a-championship-model\/","title":{"rendered":"Denver Broncos Defense &#8211; A Championship Model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe it or not, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/broncos\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denver Broncos<\/a> have now moved to 3-1 on the season after a huge home victory over <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/raiders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oakland Raiders<\/a>, <\/span>as the defense dominated. Both sides of the ball dominated, as the Broncos efficient paved the way for a win. However, the defensive dominance authored a path forward for the Broncos to win a championship. Although only a quarter of the season down, the model of the Broncos defense has shown the 2017 Broncos could be championship contenders.<\/p>\n<h2>Denver Broncos Defense &#8211; A Championship Model<\/h2>\n<h3>Denver&#8217;s Offense Wins Games<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Denver Broncos<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t make it look easy on both sides of the football, but they did, however, improve to 3-1 with a huge AFC West victory over their divisional rivals <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oakland Raiders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To begin, the Broncos led most of the game, taking an early 7-0 lead that was added to with a field goal to extend the lead to 10-0. Yet, the pesky Raiders hung around all game, putting the score within three points at 10-7 just before the Broncos added another pair of field goals to give them the 16-10 victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunday was, without a doubt, an inconsistent game for the offense after a touchdown drive in the first quarter, with some untimely penalties, overly conservative play, and poor pass protection (yet again).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defense, on the other hand, was dominant. <\/span><b><\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MillVo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Von Miller<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Broncos defensive front line were absolutely outstanding in this game, holding the Oakland Raiders to a whopping total of 24 rushing yards in the game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a performance that should have paved the way for a 20-plus point victory, but the offense couldn\u2019t get out of its own way in this game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Denver&#8217;s Defense Wins Championships<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned earlier, the run defense was masterful yet again. No matter what the Raiders did, they couldn\u2019t get anything going on the ground in this game. The passing game was shut down as well, save for a broken coverage on their lone touchdown and a field goal drive led by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/15803\/ej-manuel\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>E.J. Manuel<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the final quarter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although heard all over the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sportsmanagement.adelphi.edu\/resources\/articles\/top-communication-channels-in-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top communication channels in sports,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Raider fans, this was a scary sight to see, as quarterback <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CarrDe02.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Carr <\/a><\/strong>spun around on a sack and appeared to overextend his back. Fortunately, although visibly in pain, he walked off the field, but couldn\u2019t manage to stand up straight. It looked as if every step was aggravating his injury. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, most Denver Broncos fan don\u2019t like the Raiders, but Carr is a good guy; regardless of rivalries are awful to see. Hopefully, his recovery process won\u2019t be too long and he\u2019ll be back on the field in no time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/player\/justinsimmons\/2555550\/profile\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Justin Simmons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has had his fair share of misuse early on in the first quarter, but he came up with a big interception to end the game<b>.<\/b> Leaping over the top of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoopAm00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amari Cooper,<\/a><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/CoopAm00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>Simmons did his part in advancing the Broncos secondary dominance. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, not all was perfect as D<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enver\u2019s kicker, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/16339\/brandon-mcmanus\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Brandon McManus<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missed a 29-yard field goal. It was a critical miss at a critical point in the game, giving the Oakland Raiders a chance to continue hanging around. As inefficient as the offense was despite their favorable field position all game, this was an inexcusable miss on a chip shot, and McManus knows it. Going into their fifth game of the season, McManus now has three misses under his belt \u2013 all at home.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, the Broncos know they can win most games if they win the turnover battle. Luckily, the missed field goal doesn\u2019t go into the books as an official turnover, so the Broncos game-ending interception won them the turnover margin battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winning the turnover battle was essential, and nearly not the case. <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/S\/SiemTr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Siemian<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sacked and stripped by none other than, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MackKh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khalil Mack.<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sack was ruled a fumble on the play before officials gathered and determined that Siemian\u2019s knee was down before he fumbled the ball.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Projecting Forward<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is that Denver is now 3-1 with a chance to be first in the AFC West by the end of the upcoming week. They took care of business against the Raiders and now will watch as teams play this Sunday to see where they stand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Broncos are now going on a bye week before taking on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/nfl-teams\/giants\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Giants<\/a> in week six.
