{"id":2989,"date":"2016-10-02T09:40:11","date_gmt":"2016-10-02T13:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonprofootball.com\/?p=2989"},"modified":"2016-10-02T09:40:11","modified_gmt":"2016-10-02T13:40:11","slug":"chip-on-his-shoulder-how-an-injury-changed-a-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/nfl\/2016\/10\/02\/chip-on-his-shoulder-how-an-injury-changed-a-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Chip on His Shoulder &#8211; How an Injury Changed a City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is no evidence of any shoulder issue with <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BreeDr00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drew  Brees<\/a><\/strong>, other than that chip as\u00a0he returns to <strong>San Diego<\/strong> for the first time in 10 years.<\/p>\n<h2>Chip on His Shoulder &#8211; How an Injury Changed a City<\/h2>\n<h3>December 31, 2005:<\/h3>\n<p>Despite the drafting of <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/R\/RivePh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philip  Rivers<\/a><\/strong>, Drew  Brees had his role as a starter firmly intact.\u00a0 After his 2004 campaign where he led the\u00a0San Diego Chargers to\u00a0their first division title in a decade and a 12-4 record.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Chargers franchised Brees in 2005 and the team would finish the season at 9-7.\u00a0While the record was a bit of a disappointment, week 17 brought more than the heartache of a year without playoffs.\u00a0 Drew  Brees took a hit from <strong>Denver Broncos<\/strong>\u00a0strong safety, <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/L\/LyncJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John  Lynch<\/a><\/strong> that would end his career with San Diego.\u00a0 The result of the devastating hit resulted in a torn labrum and rotator cuff damage in his throwing shoulder.<\/p>\n<h3>The Decision<\/h3>\n<p>Brees entered the 2006 with a great deal of skepticism as to whether the shoulder had fully recovered during the off-season.\u00a0 With Brees looking for a new long-term contract and Rivers on the back burner, The <strong>Chargers<\/strong> decided not push their moderate attempt to keep the recovered quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>While the <strong>Miami Dolphins<\/strong> made a push for Drew  Brees, it was the <strong>New Orleans Saints<\/strong> who would mortgage the franchise on the arm of the Pro Bowl quarterback.\u00a0 The rest, as they say, is history.<\/p>\n<p>Brees is now in his 11th season with New Orleans.\u00a0 All he has done since his arrival is deliver <strong>Super Bowl XLIV<\/strong>, destroy every Saints team passing record and cement his spot in Canton, and he&#8217;s not done yet.\u00a0 Needless to say, the gamble paid off unimaginably well for the Saints and the city of New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>So, 11 years after that dreaded New Year&#8217;s Eve game in 2005, Brees will make his first return to <strong>Qualcomm Stadium<\/strong>.\u00a0 Despite being nearly 11 years removed, he will be very comfortable in the stadium in which he played his first five pro season.<\/p>\n<h3>This Sunday<\/h3>\n<p>Here in 2016, Brees remains at the top of his game.\u00a0\u00a0He leads the NFL in passing yards (1062) and\u00a0touchdowns (8) with only one interception which came last week against the <strong>Atlanta Falcons<\/strong>.\u00a0 He also passed <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MariDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dan  Marino<\/a><\/strong> for third on the <strong>NFL&#8217;s All-Time Passing Yards<\/strong> list in week two against\u00a0the <strong>New York Giants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite\u00a0Brees&#8217; gaudy start to the season, however, there are problems in New Orleans.\u00a0 The team is off to an 0-3 start with no relief in sight on their schedule.\u00a0 The defense continues to be a liability and give up yards and points at a feverish pace, which partially explains why Brees is racking up his yardage totals thus far. \u00a0All those who have #9 on their fantasy football team are loving it. However, most fans agree that this brand of football is a tough watch.<\/p>\n<p>It should be interesting to see how Brees is received this week. It is hard to\u00a0imagine that the Chargers fans will have any animosity towards their former starter.<\/p>\n<p>As far as a prediction for this week, this&#8217;ll be a tough\u00a0one to swallow.\u00a0 Until the injury-depleted and abnormally young defense gives reason to believe that they can slow down an NFL team, one must assume that we will see more of the same recipe we have seen in the first three weeks. A healthy portion of passing yards from Brees, a generous amount of points against, throw in a dash of Philip  Rivers and <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/BenjKe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kelvin  Benjamin<\/a><\/strong> and a sprinkle of <strong><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GordMe00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&#038;utm_source=direct&#038;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Melvin  Gordon<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chargers 37 &#8211; Saints 30<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Main Photo: NEW ORLEANS, LA &#8211; SEPTEMBER 01:  Drew Brees #9 of the New Orleans Saints throws the ball before a game at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on September 1, 2016 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
